I was just so confused rewatching battle tendency bc he left wamuus ring in a bubble for Joseph, which even if wamuu did pop he would have gotten from fighting wamuu anyway

lisa lisa was also almost completely useless in fights (mostly because araki's editors didn't want her doing too much)

Here's the real answer though:
Caesar's death tugged the hearts of viewers, and demonstrated the very real threat of the Pillar Men.
You may ask the same about deaths from other Parts, and the answer is the same. Deaths like these make you pause for a moment and realise the very real danger the rest of the characters are in.
Caesar's death is also holds the message of the importance of keeping a cool head to avoid making silly mistakes (as Caesar did)
I blame Araki for not fleshing out this more in the dialogue and commentary following the deaths - especially in a shounen series - but I do believe Araki intended this message.
e.g. if Joseph had followed up by saying something like "Dammit, Caesar! You were too hot-headed!"
