Why does the cover look like this

its cuz viz (the english publisher for jojo), used the special "jojonium" release of the manga instead of the regular versions

basically, there was a special release of the manga in japan called "jojonium" that was hardcover and had special artwork and araki interviews and such

viz translated that version instead of the regular version

that artwork is actually specially drawn by araki in his modern artstyle, which is why it looks so... unique

so the only official physical english release of the jojo manga is this special funky looking version

but jojonium only lasted for parts 1-3, so part 4 and onwards still have the hardcovers but no special artwork

they use the artwork from the regular volumes from then on

tldr: this is a special release of the manga with different artwork made by araki in his modern style, unfortunately this "special" release is the only version we have in english
