Joko Anwar’s Nightmares and Daydreams beat. Ostensibly, an anthology horror series helmed by one of Indonesia’s most prolific current day horror directors, though each episodes have different directors. The series as a whole and individually are flawed, some more than others. ||making the series actually connected can be a strength, but it can also be a weakness as it makes some episodes lose their horrific punch like Poems and Pain having to add a final scene that shifts the tone from bittersweet to… is angry the right word?||

But nothing, NOTHING could have prepared me for the conclusion ||that this was all the origin story of INDONESIAN AVENGERS LMAO!|| I’M NOT FUCKING KIDDING! ||I did go NO WAY at the end of ep 6 with the recruitment scene, but ep 7’s superhero confrontation just had me laughing so hard. Dark Universe eat your heart out.||

OH WHAT THE HELL WHA CHAPTER 92

Caught up with Witch Hat Atelier at 95 tragic HURTS SO GOOD chapters. Yeah this story gets surprisingly dark lol. But I’m getting ahead of myself. WHA stars a girl named Coco, who loves magic since she was little. An incident led to her being an apprentice in a Witch’s Atelier, and she deepens her understanding of magic… and the dangers it can lead to.

The strength of this manga lies in its beautiful artwork fitting the fantasy genre and imaginative playing with panels rarely seen in eastern comics. The story is no slouch either though, with great character growth and exploration and GEEZ it gets dark and tragic lol. Also raises up interesting questions and discussions, ||should magic be free or restricted?|| It’s also a very slow burn manga but OH MY GOD when it pays off! It’s one of the most fun magic systems I’ve ever seen. It’s easy to understand, easy to imagine potential future spells, and best of all… we can do it! Just follow the rules and draw your own spell! Such a good idea to engage with readers.

It’s not without its flaws though. The Silver Eve Festival arc felt too long at times haha (like 50% of the manga currently), and the slow burn nature of the manga means we don’t get answers to questions raised up or motivations to strange character behavior until much later at times. Which can be frustrating to some. I love it though.

Highly, HIGHLY recommended to everyone. ESPECIALLY Fantasy fans. You’ll love it.

As for me, since I’m all caught up with this and Frieren, I’ll be binging Delicious in Dungeon to round out the High Fantasy Trio. Well, either that or this Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen spinoff. Yeah WHAK first.

The final section could have been a bit better or maybe I'm just looking for something else, the settings of it were fantastic though, hits the non-standard sci-fi aesthetic really well. If I were to rank the alien designs between adaptations, it would have to be: Movie, Manga, Anime. The movie's aliens are like, near the higher echelon of alien design of course, the manga's nonsensical-ness of the designs lends well to itself, the anime's aliens feel like they make sense i.e. like they'd fit in with the world so that's kinda iffy on me. Aesthetics-wise, the anime has a lot of really insane visuals and cuts that I absolutely adore, reminiscent of Annihilation's usage of the whole spectrum of colours.
