Wicked Part 1 watched. God DAMN that was a bloody good adaptation. The leading ladies were fantastic at their roles, Elphaba didn’t dethrone my favorite Idina but still good but boy howdy Ga/linda was freaking amazing haha, probably my favorite portrayal of her. Oh and for those wondering about cameos, ||yes both Idina and Kristin are here for a short song number haha||. Loved all the song renditions and the production values are top notch. As a big fan of the musical I’m satisfied.

nobody talks or acts like a human throughout the entire series. they’re children and they’re already like jaded 20 somethings, and the adults talk to them like they’re adults.

||the one kid that isn’t immediately ready to fight to protect the world and die is stabbed in the neck by another student (they’re both 14 btw).

the teacher is a rapist and is never punished, which in itself isn’t bad writing but the story presents the victim as if she’s in the wrong. the parents outright claim they’ll spend the rest of their lives atoning for their daughter — no one even once questions how unfair it is for these literal children to be forced into this shit and die one by one. the parents are more concerned about how well they performed as mecha pilots or they’re just sad that their kid died, which is fair, but no one is concerned about how fucked up the situation is. the girl that tricked the kids into the contract goes to each house of the kids to not even apologize but to just be like “here’s the truth of what happened” and then she decides to volunteer to be a mecha pilot. she assures us that her brother, the dung beetle, cares about her deeply — but he does absolutely nothing to suggest that to be true. same with jun ushiro, who beat his 10 year old sister and everyone else is just okay with that for some reason. it’s given a reason half way through but the reason is dogshit and makes the kid who just watched it happen seem like an incompetent jackass

misumi tanaka amounts to nothing except more forced trauma, her character arc sucks ass from start to finish. it feels like the author trying to do the evangelion “hurt people hurt people” thing, but doesn’t know how to write a relationship that feels human. her dodging of her kid is just pathetic (she talks about not having earned the right to be a mom, which is laughable and not what jun needed at all) and her concluding with a suicide is just like. okay. whatever lol. jun barely seems affected by it||

the piano recital is the only part of bokurano that gets close to working, because it’s the only part where the author even tries to write the other side. the fact that entire universes are getting wiped out isn’t something the author even tries to make feel real, we get hardly any time with the opponents at all

at no point does it feel like they’re in danger of losing, the mecha shit feels completely arbitrary half the time. none of the fights are good

with this panel i was thinking “oh shit, maybe the authors gonna do something with the other worlds” but no, he’s fully content to be like “Isn’t this fucked up?” and then move on

the arcs move at breakneck pace, we barely get any time to process anything. rarely do we see the kids actually mourn for each other because the story just flashes forward to the next mech fight. there’s hardly any downtime. when its not victim blaming a 14 year old grooming victim, it’s being predictable and boring. it is not fine. it is a 0/10 with some good art at times

also, the ending explains nothing. the author mocks the readers for expecting an explanation, he literally (no exaggeration) just says “it’s just life. there might be a god out there but who knows” and that’s the fucking ending

That's actually the point of it, it's an endless cycle
Bokurano is less about mecha fights and "both sides have a point" but rather about existentialism through the lens of all characters involved; Each and every one of them thinks they're the "hero" of the story, and the reason they don't act like children is because they all have to deal with the true nature of the "game" and the mecha fight is just the driving plot of it
I can get why it's repetitive though, the manga is structured more like a collection of short stories than one big continuous one

tanaka's few personal scenes are punctuated by the standard inhuman "no one ever talks like this" dialogue lol

which also begs the question why half the pilots are just adults. why the fuck did they choose children for it when adults were perfectly capable of piloting it? in eva they at least make that shit clear

but this whole read was super relentlessly frustrating to me because no one acted like a human being lmfao

From the POV of the main characters, they're chosen at random, in which many of them felt unfair, but we as a reader can feel that there's something more that's going on behind the scene, which hinted at a higher power is at play. But ultimately the story keeps it vague because thematically, it's what it's going for - life goes on, the cycle repeat, there might be something who forced someone to recruit more pilots for the mecha, and more people will die. There's not really any point to elaborate on the details because it's not what the manga aims for
