Avengers: Mech Strike beat. It’s a fun 5 issue miniseries where the Avengers face Biomechanoids that devour matter and energy, which necessitates them riding giant mechas conveniently from a material the enemies can’t digest that Tony built ages ago just in case lol. Lots of cool and funny moments, like I liked what they did with Spider-Man here and leaning towards his science inclination.

That’s not to say it’s perfect though. The villain reveal is cool but… I didn’t remember ||Kang the Conqueror|| being this annoying to read through their dialogue lol. Every single sentence they say is basically “gee look how smart I am and how weak you all are.” It gets boring. Second, and probably the weirdest problem I had is that… it doesn’t really feel like a mech series. Like throughout the story they feel they can be cut out, most of the time the avengers in their mechs spend the pages getting their asses kicked. Like after the triumphant reveal of the mech in issue 1, we skip their first triumphant outing and go straight to them struggling due to the increased speed of appearance of their enemies. Plus the plot is resolved without any help from the mechs lol. Even their last hurrah is ultimately meaningless. Really their most important use is ||being a distraction for invading Kang’s fortress, and also letting Spidey fly so he can be the one to observe and give his plan of letting this one biomechanoid go.|| Sometimes I feel like the writers didn’t want to make a mecha series and was forced by the higher ups to include them lol

Also not really a problem but why does Banner need to turn into the hulk to use his suit? Still, the Hulk piloting a mecha is funny.

So yeah fun action comic starring the avengers but feels off. Anyway this thing had a sequel in Monster Hunters so checking that one next.

Mech Strike Monster Hunters beat. Honestly? I prefer this sequel to the original series, and why? Because it takes its original albeit insane premise and sticks with it instead of abandoning it and shoving them to the sidelines. The premise being Doctor Doom has used an artifact to empower villains with magitek mechs that can monsterize those it attacks. They prove too much for their mechs, so they turn to their own magical artifact of dubious reliability, upgrading their mechs to give them a fighting chance.

It’s a goddamn blast of a read haha. I love the redesigns of the mechs, I love the character moments especially from Hulk, Wasp, Rocket, and especially Groot (amazing final issue btw lol). ||Giant Groot powered by all of the Avengers Mech vs Giant Doom is the stuff of legends.|| Doom is a much better villain compared to the last series’s, when he’s condescending it’s believable. Also LMAO him sulking like a child at the final issue ||ok you broke my toys so I’m not telling this upcoming enemy I know about so NYAH!||. How they beat him also doesn’t depend on a deus ex machina like last time. ||Herald to Eternity Black Panther|| is great but comes out of nowhere and he didn’t even share his plans with the avengers. This time it’s all skill and power sets they already have baby.

Also ||Thanos|| being a psyche out replacement villain BOTH times was hilarious.

So yeah do I think these two series will go down as one of the best? I doubt it, but they’re pure dumb fun at its best. I recommend them both if only for the final fight in the sequel haha.

DC:Mech is by far my favorite. A 6 issue Elseworlds tale in a world where after the Second World War ended, a giant Parademon Mech annihilated the Justice Society. What’s worse, this was just a solitary scout, prompting the survivors to develop similar countermeasures, and the story takes place in the modern age as Darkseid finally turns his Anti-Life sights on Earth… which is defended by The Flash (Wally West), The Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern (John Stewart and Hal Jordan).

What sets this higher in my eyes compared to the Marvel ones is that it’s a complete story that doesn’t ask the readers to just roll with it. That was the Mech Strike’s biggest weakness really, it uses already established history. Mech on the other hand gives each character their history and individual stories, like Superman and Batman bonding, The Flash and Wonder Woman ||grieving for their loved ones||, and the legacy characters trying to live up to their predecessors. All of this with cool mech designs and AWESOME moments abound! Also the final enemy is ||Darkseid commanding his Planet Apokolips transforming into a Mecha that looks just like him LMAO!||. Here I thought nothing was gonna top Monster Hunters final fight lol. I also like them starting off as a bad team but grew to be true comrades and friends.

It’s also peppered with just little moments that make it better, like when Wonder Woman was so distraught over Steve Trevor she slams the computer console as Batman right next to her has this very worried look that she destroyed his baby lol. Also a recuperating Superman being covered by a Batman blanket (yes with big ol’ symbol). ||Hawkwoman|| being Bruce’s godmother was genius, and Lex is perfectly Lex lol. With the future tease of ||the Legion of Doom and Brainiac|| I really want a sequel to this setting.

DC: Mech > Mech Strike Monster Hunters final fight> Avengers Mech Strike

I highly recommend DC:Mech to everyone. A great standalone story.

Gundam Requiem For Vengeance beat. A solid entry for the Universal Century timeline, set roughly around the time of Operation Odessa during the One Year War. We follow a Zeon Batallion as they run into the misfortune of encountering the White Demon Gundam ||yes I said Demon lol, as it turns out it’s not Amuro and it’s not the RX-78 model but the Earth Gundam 79 one and it’s a different Newtype kid.|| The first and second episodes are my favorite due to the sheer horror that is from fighting a vastly superior enemy massacring your troops and you can’t do anything to stop it, you can only escape or delay it. It had a ||rather tragic bittersweet|| ending, ||with the MC managi by to convince the kid to stop his rampage but ended up with his death. Also kind of a mixed message with the ending there lol, after all of that she STILL joins the Zeon remnants, all for a future where children don’t have to fight? WHAT?||

But yeah solid 6 episode series. If you like anti-wars and/or mecha series you’ll like this

… y’all ever read or watch a visual media and go “man this art is WASTED on this crap!”? That’s how I felt about Blacksmith Apprentice at Level 596. The manga has my pet peeve of an MC, the stupidly ignorant overpowered dumbass. The worst part is THEY KEEP DOUBLING DOWN ON IT! Here’s what I mean: MC’s level is known to other people-> reveals his insane training method and circumstances. Done- oh wait he thinks he’s still that much weaker to other people -> gets him tested out, he realize show much higher he is- oh wait he reveals a huge vault of materials you can’t obtain through his previously stated method -> his SECOND procurement is revealed, now can we move- oh hey his smithing is actually terrible resulting in results that are not using the material’s full potential and he needs someone to teach him- WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE CLIENT WANTS IT THAT WAY?

To top it off the art isn’t even that amazing lol, just good. Half a mind to just drop it really.

Diamond in the rough was the strangest experience to me, i had no enjoyement reading it, not a single chapter

But i couldnt put my finger on why

Sounds similar to when I read Jiangshi X. It had a setting that was interesting to me, but it’s biggest sin being a generic shonen, I wasn’t invested in any of the events despite it working in other series.

By the end I decided it was because it was too shallow in execution.

Caught up with Shokubutsu Monster Musume Nikki at 16 chapters. Now THIS is a hidden gem. It tells the story of an Alraune, a plant monster that has a woman’s body on top. She was previously a Saint that was betrayed and fed to a monster plant but instead ended up fused and becoming her current form. As far as powers go she can replicate any plant she eats, but she’s still an immobile plant and stuck where she is. It’s a surprisingly engaging story, the MC is powerful yes but she has clear limitations and frequently has to struggle against her enemies that for one reason or another are trying to kill her. I love all the characters here, and very reminiscent of this other Isekai about being turned into a Dragon. Powerful, but not kick everyone’s butt powerful, so they have to really utilize their skill sets to survive their harsh world.

Honestly I recommend people give this one a try. It’s fun seeing her struggles.

Also seems to be headed for girl/girl if you care about that.
