but just because something isn’t explicitly written doesn’t mean it isn’t something we can reasonably infer. an introspective flashback and her trying to comfort yuji right before her head explodes is a great character moment and i haven’t seen any evidence to suggest that she’s not still that person that, during what she assumed were her last moments , made a point to try and assure her friend that everything’s ok. that’s still her

I think I should make my point a bit more clear that Nobara coming back isn't bad itself. I mentioned 3 problems I have with the way she's brought back and that if you remove these problems, that chapter isn't nearly as bad

My problem with a conclusion being tossed away is that it never really gets more substance once Nobara comes back. Its treated as some "shiii that's cool!!" moment and simultaneously affects scenes like these

I also disagree with the moment being just as good despite the recent chapters because you have the story going in a different route for that character

If it takes a different route, it should at the very least add some substance to it. Add some value to Nobara coming back if her conclusion didn't really mean anything. How does she grow using the character arc conclusion she gets? Yeah exactly she gets nothing to her after that

Her arc concluding in a way where she's supposed to die staying true to herself + more characterization for Yuji feels very cheap when you realize she comes back a hundred chapters later. I get jjk subverting expectations but this is subverting what the story stood for

I don't see jjk as this "live on and don't die" type of story. When good characters die (which they rarely do), they die staying true to themselves. Nobara had this too. It feels cheap when you bring that same character back and change the story's theme to "die staying true to yourself and come back as a stagnant plot device"

Tl dr I think gege can't write and relies on shock value while simultaneously ruining older scenes

Marvel’s What If, the classic 1977-1984 47 issues run beat. Each issue has Uatu the Watcher introduce himself, shows an event in the main timeline played out, then shifts to a different universe where a small difference happened. It could be Da Vinci deciding to make his futuristic contraptions a reality, it could be that the gamma bomb had a different effect, or Loki deciding to escape earlier. Then we follow the consequences of said alteration. Sometimes it’s a sequel to another What If.

So yeah I dare say people unfamiliar with the whole of Marvel can still enjoy this short romp into Marvel thanks to the Watcher explaining the premise. As a whole, the series has its highs and lows as can be expected, so here’s some of my hated and favorites. I feel the last… 8 or so issues were better than earlier ones generally.

Fun fact: Issue 16, Shang-Chi continues to work for Fu-Manchu, wasn’t included in any of the collections. Obvious why really lol.

The worst

1. 21: Sub-Mariner marries Invisible Woman. This one is a sequel to the very first What If where Spider-Man joined the Fantastic Four… but holy crap WHY would they tell this tale lol. ||Reed loses his goddamn mind and becomes a villain but stupid.||
2. 11: Marvel Staff becomes the Fantastic Four. You’d think that with such an outlandish oremise we’d be in for a whacky time… but no. The story takes it too mind numbingly serious. IT’S STAN LEE WITH STRETCHY POWERS AND JACK KIRBY AS THE THING! HOW DO YOU SCREW THIS UP!
3. 14: Fury in WW2… but IN SPACE! That’s the problem really, it really is just one of their old stories but in space. Only redeeming factor is Nick’s conflicted relation with his computer superior.
4. 15: random new characters become Nova instead. Why?
   5: 29: Avengers beat everyone. Dumb premise and dumb solution.

This such a great emotional story cementing the Fanastaic Four as family. ||Reed still loses his mind BUT he goes out with a bang and makes Annihilus beg for mercy lol. But yeah great character moments. Only question is… what happened to the boy? It was safely delivered but it wasn’t mentioned again. It also makes Reed worse now that I think about it LMAO!||
8. 22: Doom the Hero. A tragic tale of a flawed man with great power and responsibility ultimately succumbing to his weakness. Great stuff.
9. 44: Captain America revived today (1984). Captain America miraculously reappears during a time when his nation needs him as a guiding light. ||Things go from bad to worse as America becomes a fascist nation, all the time Captain America is upholding that transformation. This can’t be a Captain America, THIS ISN’T CAPTAIN AMERICA!||

||And then Steve Rogers was discovered by a submarine far away, and everything clicks into place. The final speech is one of my absolute favorites. The first part snaps out the citizen making them realize he’s the genuine article, and the second part stops them from going into a frenzy by following him blindly and instead asking them to please think for themselves and what it is that they want. Then the crowd answers, and Stev realizes the Ideals and dreams he fought for wasn’t dead… it’s still alive, and he’ll continue the fight for that same dream.||
