I'd argue probably actually around 1999/2000 cuz it's both the turning point of the century and also everyone thought the world was gonna end then, that's why many of the pre-2000s animanga are a lot darker and bleak and some even apocalyptic
This trend somehow didn't see a return for the 2012 "end of the world" happening, maybe everyone just stopped believing in that the first time it didn't happen

Actually I still can't see much of a connection of this and older shoujo manga(other than whatever CLAMP was making). I'd understand if their concepts were a lot to do with more societal stuff, but a lot of older shoujo and women's media were very extreme and not even "timely". Like even with Utena's deals with mysoginy and power play, those aren't products of the time but rather something seen and felt throughout history. And you see women's animanga today and direct attacks and depictions of those concepts aren't so visible or not there at all

I finished reading Watership Down, an English novel from the 70s, about 400 pages long - though I think another 50 or so would be nice; it follows a group of rabbits who leave their warren due to an incoming threat and set out to find a new place to settle in. In between their travels stories of a legendary rabbit hero are told, kind of rabbit mythology. It was very fun to read, especially some descriptions of human creations depicted from the animals' pov. It was hype at times too, especially the end of part 3 of the book.
There have been several adaptations but like, one of them is a 2 hour movie (too short to convey the entire 400 pages probably), the second is a 39 episode show, with each ep around 25 mins long (probably too long for 40 pages, and wikipedia says that by season 2 the producers dove into original storylines and whatnot)
uhhhh recommended!
