Got a theory. Part 3's 'Dio' is not the same Dio Brando featured in Phantom Blood as Jonathan's adopted brother

in Part 1, despite all other zombies seemingly 'eradicated' there are still some that made out alive such as Wang Chen, Officer...etc. There could have been another zombie that survived to aid Whang Chen. Dio being the over-thinker that he is, puts in another one of his zombie soldiers in the Coffin as well for backup. But when Jonathan was already getting subdued, the zombie did not come out at all. However with Jonathan turning the tide, and putting Dio down, the zombie did not take notice until it was too late. Erina boarded the same coffin as the zombie but did not attack her as it was in a confused state. When he figured out the whole situation, it was too late and it was sunrise so he was forced to hide inside the coffin until it finally sank till the bottom. After a hundred years, he was rescued by sailors via the coffin and such, took on Dio's persona and looks (We can see that vampires can change their appearence such as Adams) and went on to be the 'Dio' in part 3.
We can also clearly see Dio been caught in the explosion of the Ship and vapourised in one of the last panels

Also, Dio's a vampire. He survived the flames before, he can do it again.

Interesting theory, however, you should be aware that Araki sometimes draws/says one thing and then later changes it, which i find annoying about his writing but it's even weirder here because he planned to "write parts 1-3 and end it there" so the fact that it looks like DIO was blown up in part 1 is a bit weird cuz when'd he have the time to get in the coffin but ignoring that the idea was likely to "show" that Dio Brando is "dead" so that when you see him again you flip your shit and are surprised that motherfucker didn't die
