Throughout Part 2, he was always weaker than all of his opponents and relied on dumb luck and outsmarting them. It makes way more sense for Joseph to have a stand that conducts hamon but also isn't physically strong.

I think the hamon part fits, but I find the abbility of Hermit Purple to not fit with Joseph AT ALL! Spirit photography was never even hinted at being his strong point, it seems so far removed from his actual way of fighting and such. I think a stand from part 8 would fit way better with him, because that one compliments his fighting style and the way he overcomes challenges.

Eh, nah. It specifically conducting hamon and it not being a traditional punch ghost stand further separates Joseph and his style, he's the only Joestar who never punch rushes someone either in Part 2

And I mean for Hermit Purple to be fully beneficial, you would have to use your wits about you. Like you said, he isn't the type to just rush in and punch like every Joestar after him. Honestly, it fits Joseph pretty well and I don't know how much his "And now you're going to say" is him actually predicting or him bullshitting. If he really was predicting, then Hermit Purple makes even more sense for Joseph.

The OVA is indeed extremely different, not just story/order-wise but tonally as well. They made it feel a lot more dark and gritty and cut out a lot of the funny/quirky parts

That said, it is extremely cool anyway and worth checking out imo. It's still not as good as the actual anime/manga but some people even prefer the OVA and honestly, I can see why in some aspects.
