Marshix recommend risk runner for ad clear but I dont remember that gun being good

it's good against fallen since they mostly do arc damage so you get its buff constantly and the chaining on it is nice for ad clear

if enemies don't do arc damage you end up having to arc nade yourself and it's annoying

Thorn is a dogwater PvE weapon and if you wanna say thats your balance for it being both a PvP and PvE weapon, then I would argue that The Last Word is in the exact same spot as it is with needing a specific exotic armor for a niche build and would much more benefit from a PvP oriented catalyst to help it where its actual design, lore and historical usage has been rather than giving it a PvE catalyst that won't actually do anything for it because the entire reason its not good in PvE is, you know, the whole point of the gun

Def wouldn't call thorn a dogwater PvE gun given along with necrochasm it still gets plenty of use. And that's coming from me who has used thorn for years now with no issues at all. Sure primaries do need love generally due to special weapons being so broken rn but thorn is by no means a dogwater weapon as you say. After it's buff allowing it to stack 40 rounds, a catalyst that makes it feel better and necrotic being featured on the exotic class item i'd say it's got a place in PvE

I used it in legendary campaigns, raids, dungeons and even a couple day 1 contests. Did fine and that's not me being bias it was killing the enemies that a primary weapon should be used against just fine

More currently in lawless frontier it's also been fine.

But in most cases the splash is the only thing it gets. No damage increase or chain effect. Very few hand cannons save for ones from endgame like raids get a damage and AoE perk combo. I think zaoulis bane was the only one in recent memory to get that kind of thing.
This is why primaries like sunshot, graviton lance or thorn with necrotics are used. Because of that chaining capability.

I'd say it's down to preference if you're using necrotics really. I just like hand cannons and have since D1.
But if I liked SMGs more than yeah I'd probably use osteo, same goes for necrochasm and autos.

Well necrotics on the base exotic is solid damage and when combined with other effects like jolt or unravel can form a feedback loop. More on top of what you're already doing is fine.
On the exotic class item however you can use it along star eaters for more super damage so you lose out on some poison damage but get a whole extra exotic perk
