Yeah the reason strongholds will forever be a gimmick is that while it's certainly unique at the end of the day you're using an exotic slot and a heavy weapon to survive, something that can be done with way less investment in many ways

If you really wanna do the strongholds stuff go for it but be conscious that your allies will feel like they're a player down. Destiny just isn't a game designed for people to be tanking and doing very little damage
