Go to Rahool without opening the engrams, there's an option on his menu where you can choose what exotic armor you want to get.

Heavy ammo guns are more limited but punch the hardest. Heavy slot is mostly used for weapons to deal with larger targets. Machineguns are heavy slot weapons that let you deal with crowds easly tho. Thunderlord is an exotic machinegun. Not great for single target damage but lets you deal with groups. You should get a primary that can easly deal with regular enemies rather than using something like Ace which is mostly a pvp gun.
