i can tell that much, ive made alien designs before so i dont make them look like humans (i can think of a very good example of a horrible alien design: the asari from mass effect)
i simply admire how the artists have made the designs alien enough to look, well, alien but humanoid enough to look intelligent
i am biased towards some designs more than others, like i was saying the witness is weird looking but from an artist's perspective it has a unique and interesting character design.
oryx is one of my favorite character designs in destiny, sure he's a big evil hive but his design is rather pretty, if that word even makes sense in this context.

and how "alien" a thing looks effects how most people will think of it
but make the design too "human" to make the character relatable to people, and you have created a lazy (and boring) design
