What build are you using? I tried that exotic but it felt really underwhelming so I must've done something wrong

Just really depends on usage. I find it extremely under whelming this build was specifically for ad clear and orb production for lower level activities and mindless game play. Example 100 kills is equal to 80 orbs. And a constant punch dodge og true combo. I can then pop arc staff like 9 time within a normal strike and sweep everything that's not a boss. The exotic just helps maintain the form for my usage.

Then don't buy it if you don't like it. That "scummy" practice only works because the player presses the purchase button. You don't need every ornament. Just buy what you like and if you're patient enough everything gets sold for BD anyway..
Also I think it's fine that exotic weapons can't take shaders, they're supposed to be unique in design, i don't want a superblack ghorn or everyone just putting the same memento on every exotic weapon.

That's precisely why I brought up superblack. Even joe Blackburn mentioned that in an interview when asked if superblack was going to return saying if we had a cool black shader would anyone use anything else? Well now look I can't go a day without seeing the shader.
Also about Warframe while I do agree more personalisation is cool some things should stay unique because otherwise everything is just going to look the same and the game isn't going to have any kind of palette.
