No, they're separate. Guardian Ranks is meant to be a kind of "skill indicator" by showing off that you've done some challenging things but it really doesn't mean anything anymore past Rank 5 because it stops giving you useful upgrades after that.

Light Level is tied to how much damage you can do to enemies and what difficulty levels you have access to. The daily Legendary Lost Sector, for example, requires you to be at least Light Level 200 in order to be able to see it. If you're at too low of a Light Level, you might stop being able to do damage to enemies.

As you work your way up the content gets more challenged

And eventually you’ll need to start putting together a solid build

Once you get to endgame and start doing raids and dungeons and shit there will definitely be optimal loadouts and builds you’ll want to use

Some of the end endgame content you’ll pretty much have to use a good build or you won’t clear

Early on builds don't really exist as builds aren't needed for early game

I have all 3 subclasses for warlock unlocked, and it seems there's only so much you can do with the abilities

3 is approximately 60% of the subclasses

Eventually you’re going to build your subclass in a certain way with super, aspects, and fragments and then use an exotic armor that builds into the gameplay loop or enhances an ability or super of that subclass

Yes so as you unlock exotic armor and weapons they can play into your builds big time and make them significantly better

I haven't actually been able to try the Kamehameha since we got off after the mission due to it being hell, but it seems awesome
