people are telling you What to do but since youre question was How the system works ill still reply.
the portal works on a scoring system, determined by your power level, the kind of modifiers in the activity, and the base difficulty.
once you reach 200, based on your score, you will drop rewards with higher power than where you are right now.
power determines what difficulties you can play, and along with your guardian rank, the tier of gear you will drop from activities. all new weapons and armor give you a bonus to outgoing damage and damage reduction, respectively. new and featured gear is the only gear you can use on activities with the avant-garde and touche modifiers.

Like right now there’s no archetype that you can spike weapons and super so if you had a 40 mobility 40 intellect pre DLC armor piece it would be cracked for a DPS build

On T5 armor you’ll always get a 75 stat roll for legendary armor which is higher than the pre dlc armor. On exotics however, the highest you can get is a 63 now. So if you have exotics from before the dlc they will be higher and have spikes that aren’t possible anymore because all the exotics now will have the archetypes

Like I said before whether the exotic is better or not will entirely depend on the roll.

At some point in the future I believe they plan on implementing the tier system to exotics or at least allowing them the higher stats but that’s not going to happen this content year

the armor mods are ok but im not a fan of font mods for a neutral game build

guys as a pvp hunter main what stats should i focus on? i currently have 153 health, 77melee, 64 grenade 13, super(idk i dont reallt use supers so thats why) 107 class and 23 weapons thoughts?

you should probably pump that super up

supers are incredibly valuable especially in comp and trials

if you’re just playing control though yeah these are fine

both are quite bad if youre using them for ad clear

qua xaphan has no reload perk and using an exotic heavy for ad clear is a less than stellar idea

When dealing with stronger adds the freeze effect that stops them from fighting back is a really big difference to have, at least that’s why I prefer it

Also in most cases ur running get away artist so u gotta consume ur grenade anyway, it’s better to have both turrents on one cooldown

You may find lightbearers that can throw grenades,class abilities and supers
When they "die" their "ghost" will start reviving them, thats where you do a finisher

the higher your reward score the higher power the drop will be

i.e. the faster you can power level

you will get the same amount of loot, but its power level will be higher
