New F2P players have access to more content then they've ever had thanks to the Portal system and the new activities they've regularly been adding to it. Additionally, the new Armor stats / Tier System means you won't have to play catchup and can start fresh alongside everyone else grinding the new gear.

The issue is that many of the issues that were simmering in the background have all begun to bubble over all at once. Frequent and worse bugs than has been normal, staffing issues especially with QA that would help mitigate other issues, microtransactions and paid cosmetics seemingly taking priority over content/in-game rewards, recycled content becoming the primary activity for most players with seemingly no plan to change until Decemeber, etc.

Most of these complaints come from seasoned players that have already experienced everything else in the game, but new players just arriving will likely feel these issues far less. You easily have hours and hours of older campaigns and other content to play through before really reaching these points of friction. Destiny 2 at its core is still an extremely solid game with great gunplay, which is why many of the games most vocal detractors are still stuck playing.

   The two main reasons to grind the Portal are for Power and Godrolls. Mint being arguably the best weapon this season means it is one of the main motivations to grind the Portal. By giving away too good of a roll easily, they are disincentivising players from grinding the Portal

Could have been a mistake, could be randomly generated and nobody caught it before going live, could be that they thought it wasn't as good as it is. RR + EH is the main godroll, but having RR + BnS & CR made it crazy good anyway.

Fact is that it was a good roll and they changed it for seemingly no given reason. Which is a bit weird, because Bungie usually leans into this sort of thing to build good will with the playerbase.
