I'm not sure if this will help, but here is some context.

Previously, there were 4 seasons per year, and each season would last 3 months. If you wanted to participate in the seasonal activities, you had to buy the Season Pass, which also included the Seasonal Reward track. After 3 months, the season would end and its Reward pass would go away.

Last year they changed the system from "Seasons" to "Episodes". They were essentially the same, but there were only 3 episodes per year, and each episode would last 4 months. If you wanted to participate in the episode activities, you had to buy the pass for that Episode, which also included the Episode Reward track. After 4 months, the episode would end and its Reward pass would go away. (You should be familiar with this from Heresy)

This year, they changed the system from "Episodes" back to "Seasons", however there is only 2 seasons per year, and each season lasts 6 months (the same length as the new DLC release schedule). They have made seasonal activities entirely F2P, so you no longer have to buy any passes to unlock activities. However, you can choose to buy the "Reward Pass" for some bonus materials and cosmetics. Each Reward Pass works similarly to the old seasonal system; each one lasts 3 months, then it goes away. Unlike the old system, the reward pass is completely disconnected from the season.

If you use eager edge for light attack movement (which is the majority use-case), the new sword will be good to have to use in Touche with the point change

If you're unaware, the scaling on Locked Loadout is being reduced to a similar level to Avant Garde, and a combo of the two is being introduced as "Touche" which should have similar scaling to the current Locked Loadout

If you hate Avant Garde, this just means you'll need to use more banes and deltas to get A ranks. Otherwise you'll want a new gear only loadout for farming

We won't know for certain how it all plays out with the other reward/difficulty tweaks that are coming until it's actually in our hands, so maybe this is just a bit of fear mongering. But it wasn't very hard to farm a few rounds of Heavy Metal until a sword with Eager dropped

To clarify something, 10-200 is the new player experience, 200-550 is the seasonal grind. At the end of the season in December, anyone above 200 will be reset back down to 200 as a way for new/returning players to catch up

The menus are a bit confusing, especially since they redid quite a few of them with Edge of Fate. Most campaigns, raids, dungeons, and other older content can be found in the "World" tab. The "Portal" is the new menu Bungie is pushing, which is how you access most the new activities that reward the new gear/weapons.

Much of that older content is still worth doing. At the very least, it's worth doing the campaigns that unlock the Stasis, Strand, and Prismatic subclasses. And many of the old raid and dungeon weapons are still top tier.

The game works off Power deltas, so if you are the same Power as the content, things are easy. If you are -10 below, it will be a bit harder. -40 is a challenge. -100 enemies are immune to your damage

realistically you're not playing any activity that'll drop any legendary weapon you should care about, so you could probably just switch weapons when you feel like it and just upgrade the one you like using

It depends on what you enjoy doing in game.

• Beyond Light's campaign was made free, and therefore the Stasis subclass is now F2P. Certain Exotics and other loot are locked behind the DLC, so it can still be a worthwhile purchase if you're after those things.
• 30th Anniversary is pretty low on the purchase list imo.
• The Final Shape is both a very solid campaign, contains the immensely popular Prismatic subclass, and allows access to the stellar Salvation's Edge raid.
• Edge of Fate has a surprisingly well-written campaign, allows access to Trials of Osiris (if you enjoy PVP), and has a decent assortment of gear that are currently popular. I want to note that the Portal and its rewards are entirely separate from EoF.

You could buy the latest 2 expansions and wouldn't be missing out on much, but that feels like a somewhat weird way to purchase into the game. The game regularly puts the Legacy collection on sale, which contains everything but the most recent expansions (and some dungeons), which is likely the cheapest way to get everything. Additionally, they changed from releasing a single large DLC each year to two slightly smaller DLCs every six months. If you just buy Edge of Fate and not the Year of Prophecy, you'll miss out on the Renegades DLC that launches in December.

No worries! Personally I'd just jump back into the game without purchasing anything yet and check out all the changes that came out recently. In many ways it's an entirely new game. You'll notice your Power has been reset to 10, armor stats are entirely different from what you remember, and they've added Tiered loot rewards

Unless the amoubt of unstable cores required to upgrade gear goes up exponentially or something, I had plenty of them after only showing up 2 weeks ago and finding every last gun in my vault was at light ten. You can get literally dozens of them from scrapping any new gear you dont like.
