Its the same as most mmos, do stuff (missions, raids, dungeons, pvp, etc) to get gear, then farm harder stuff for even better gear. You can kinda choose to do whatever part of the game you like. I like harder group content like missions and strikes, some people like raids and dungeons for the complexity and puzzle solving. And some people just do pvp and only do pve to get pvp gear. Its up to you really. Let me know if you have more questions

If you mostly like pvp, that would be the crucible. Theres tons of different modes and its mostly a shooter with some abilities splashed in (abilities are used much less in pvp). For group pve stuff id recommend fireteam ops, and vanguard ops. You can eventually build up to raids or dungeons later on or if you have a group. And what do you play on?
