So, it's exceptionally rare that one item is definitively best in slot. Depending on the activity and team comp, there will be different weapons you'll want to roll with. There's nothing that is a top contender that simultaneously has no viable alternatives and is unobtainable. Either it'll be obtainable or there'll be something equivalent that is.

If you're worried about harmonizers, Zaouli wins by default. That said, raid weapons are generally not in the subset of weapons worth burning harmonizers on since farming is actually viable

Generally you reserve them for Exotic Missions since those typically are slow to farm and have fairly massive loot pools for what they are. Raids aren't an awful thing to burn them on but you'll have significantly better odds of getting red borders directly relative to exotic missions.

When scripture is active, it always drops whatever you selected. Some times they (scriptures) drop from activity completions or enemy deaths.

It depends on the activity. Higher difficulty activities tend to not be matchmade. The game has a built-in LFG tool though.

Raids, dungeons (with the exception of the Rite of the Nine dungeons on Explorer difficulty), activities at Expert difficulty or higher, etc. are all not matchmade

Exactly as it sounds. You don't have a lot of stat points, but they're spread well.

Also exactly as it sounds, but using the tier system. 100 is tier 10. 80 is tier 8. So, for example, 100 Resilience, 80 Discipline, 80 Recovery.

Hello! I know this is quite a few hours after you posted, sorry it couldn't be sooner. This game isn't like other MMOs, there is no "true" best-in-slot. You can beat much of the game with a variety of different weapons and armor. However, there are certain options that are more consistent and universally applicable that makes them closer to a "best-in-slot". Almost all of these options are from endgame content: Raids, Dungeons, and Grandmaster Nightfalls. There are a small amount of top options that come from seasonal content, which has historically been available after the season ends, albeit a lot more annoying to grind for.

Typically when making a build, you need three components; Armor, Exotics, and Weapons.

• Armor is the easy part, your only goal is to pick 2 stats and get them to 100. The vast majority of the time, this ends up being 100 Resilience and 100 Discipline. If you have those stats, you have BiS. Could it be better? Yeah, you can try to really minmax your stats and go for triple or quad 100s, but it is almost entirely unnecessary.
• For Exotics, they pretty much all have static rolls, so it's mostly about going through the effort to acquire them. They'll end up forming the basis of your build and fill some specific niche.
• Weapons, on the other hand, are usually picked to fill in the gaps your Exotic choices left. Are you using an add-clear Exotic? You'll probably want to bring options for boss damage. Does your Exotic stun one Champion type? Bring legendries to handle the others. Again, there is no wrong way to fill in these gaps, just options that are more consistent or universally applicable.

That said, we are about to receive one of the biggest meta shifts in the games history on July 15th. Armor is being completely reworked, with stats being redesigned and set bonuses being added to create actual buildcrafting options past 100 Resil + 100 Disc. A tier system is being created with higher tier drops being more upgradable than ever before. Several new weapon types are being added to the game. And while they've said they will be attempting to convert our current stuff to the new system, it's very likely they won't convert well and end up being a soft reset for all players. So if anything, starting with the Edge of Fate is the perfect place to get in on the ground floor regarding the new BiS options.

Even outdated videos will get you the gist of how the activity works even if their weapon/build recommendations.

I'm not particularly MMO-minded so I had to google what the different progression types you're referring to are. Assuming what I found is correct, then yes Destiny is more vertical.

We were talking about that a bit earlier, I had a lot of issues with inconsistancies as well. Apparently it is tied to both FPS and connection. It was recommended to set your FPS to 30 (or have the non-focus FPS set to 30 and alt-tab before the rocket hits) for more consistent breaks. I personally haven't tried it yet though.

Like I explained in another comment, there is no real "BiS" in this game, but like FFXIV, there are meta strats. You can always ask around here what the general meta DPS options are (for example, it's currently Lord of Wolves, Queenbreaker, and Hezen Vengeance). However, some fights will have specific mechanics or stratgies that need their own little options. Crota takes bonus damage from swords, so it's generally a good idea to have access to a good DPS sword if you plan on running Crota's End. Additionally, if you're planning on using rocket launchers for DPS, it's usually assumed someone will be using Gjallarhorn to boost everyone else's damage, so make sure you can be that person if the team needs.

Khvostov was really strong when it came out, it got nerfed, it's still good but the effort to get it makes it feel worse than it actually is.

Divinity is actually not that bad to get. You can do most of the quest during the raid and get it all done in one go. The worst part when I got it was just this one boomer guy in the sherpa run who asked questions about everything and then would follow up with a story of "it used to be done like this back in D1" or taking 15 minute smoke breaks.

Necrochasm was by far the most annoying.

Like Echo said, go to your Destinations tab, click on "Eternity" on the right side of the screen, then click the big left circle called "Rite of the Nine" and launch it. When you load in, run up to the NPC the Emissary and look in the chest to the left. There is a full set of max power gear to help new/returning players catch up and get ready for the next DLC.

I know it seems very overwhelming right now, and there is a lot of change coming in about a month that I'm sure won't help things. My best advice at this point is to just focus on the basics.

1. Play the campaigns and unlock subclasses. The campaigns can be done without any specific gear or other requirements. Just enjoy them while getting familiar with the game. You should have access to the Arc, Void and Solar sublclasses at the moment. You can fully unlock all their upgrades at Ikora, and I highly suggest you do (even if you don't plan on playing them right away). Finishing the Beyond Light campaign will unlock Stasis, finishing the Lightfall campaign will unlock Strand, and finishing The Final Shape will unlock Prismatic. It will take a little time to do all this, but it will be well worth it by the end.

2. Unlock Exotics. This will naturally happen as you play through the campaign, but exotics form the backbone of most builds so its good to have access to as many as you can. The system can be a little complicated at first, but you don't need to worry about that right now. Just open your exotic engrams at Rahool in the tower.

3. Seasonal content and the Rite of the Nine event are limited time, so if you have access to those and are at all interested, I'd give them a try. However, if you can't/won't do them I wouldn't sweat it too much. Some of the rewards are cool, but nothing worth going out of your way for as a new player.

There are so many changes coming, but power is one. 10-200 is the new player base grind. Then 200-450 (iirc) is the seasonal grind. Each season it'll reset back to 200, so if you skip a couple seasons, you should be able to hop right back in

They're created by casting your super or through other means like surge mods on your helmet slot

Basic rule of thumb for PvE is never invest in Intellect, always go for 100 Resilience, and the rest depends on the build.
Most Hunter builds can recharge Dodge without Mobility, so Discipline tends to be the secondary stat focus.

Don't worry too much about anything more than just getting 100 Resilience though, as armour and armour stats are being totally reworked next DLC in a month.

Of course you're also very new so you'll get more options for stats as you play as well

Right click on your gear (if you're on pc) the first square box on the left in your gear slots is usually the stat mod spot, you just pick the +10/+5 resilience until you have 100
