Well my strategy would be like
Save the Scroll of Identify until you got into the second dungeon
Hopefully found at least a +1 tier 2 weapon
Use that until you got to the fourth dungeon
And use all the Scroll of upgrade on the tier 5 weapons and armor
Equip them and use the well of health that you saved

I think it's fair. Curses on equipment are not that punishing. And when you find the stuff you want to use, you can just upgrade it a few times to remove the curse. Or enchant it. Or use a well of health. Or an ankh lol
