Yeah, I'm afraid it's well established that piranhas are immune to all area-based effects because they're underwater. This is the flip side of how you can instakill them if you move them out of water (with chains, blast wave wand, etc).

Since we are talking about why the gas does not affect the fish, why does the damage from the fire wand affect them? it does not burn them but it does do them a little damage

well fireblast looks like it's a directed explosion of sorts
