A deck of german-suited playing cards produced midwar by Speilkartenfabrik Altenburg (A major playing card company which still survives and produces playing cards as ASS Altenburger today). Each card holds a caption and imagery related to the war and leaders.

This deck is one of my favorite pieces because I feel the images captures a lot of character of the period and some sentiment of the war. It conjures a lot of thought about who these would be for (who’d buy them, and who’d use them and when). There’s many locations and nationalities bringing in the idea that “we” are in a new global, industrial war, being led by strong, capable leaders in different areas of society. It emphasizes unity in war between the different regions of Germany. There’s the juxtaposition of these new developments on a traditional style suite with old heraldry. There’s also the meta juxtaposition of seeing these contrast with the realities of the time, and outcome.

The deck reveals some of the extent of how pervasive the war was in societal consciousness, that even playing cards are joining in for the war effort.

I found them at a card booth at a convention a few years back. I like playing cards, there's something rich about them, and I've always had a great interest in the WWI period.

Well the top post says you can tell someone that a particular thing is your favourite but idk where

I’m flattered and glad others can enjoy them too!

What you’re referring to is the rule for me, the entrant, though. I picked my favorite image/item and submitted it (as this post). You can just sit back and watch people’s entries trickle in catsalute .

A bit more background-

Decks similar to this (and other items) would be made throughout the war in every nation, often for some kind of fundraising for a particular military unit. The most common reason I remember seeing is raising funds for wounded soldiers or widows of that unit. It could also be funds for purchasing equipment or other comforts.

#

Purchases of this deck in particular seem to have contributed to a general fund for aviatiors, according to the message on the seven of hearts (“Herausgegeben zu gunsten des Luftfahrerdank”)

Something else mildly interesting:

All the king cards have a symbolic crown on their corner pips to signify their status. They’re Crown Prince Ruprecht of Bavaria, Duke (and also Crown Prince) Albert of Württemburg, Crown Prince Wilhelm of Prussia/Germany, and Kaiser Wilhelm II.

However, Wilhelm II’s card uses a different, fuller crown, placing him above the others despite being the same face value as a card.

I think it also resembles the model of the proposed crown of the german empire, which was never physically made, but still used in heraldic devices.

There’s lots of spins on the concept made by companies in each participant of the war, at various points

Oh wow! I just found one very similar to mine! I guess they re-used some of the art at various points.

Yep, that sounds about right.

I got mine for ~$90 IIRC, but it was a special circumstance.

# sweet cliff is 32 cards the complete set?

For a german pattern deck, yup! German decks are generally printed in 32 or 36, but this one was designed for 32.

To be technical, there is also a company card usually, which’d make it 33, (has the company logo and stuff and is standard with card decks. You don’t play with it though.), but mine doesn’t have it. I think there’s also a card box, but mine doesn’t have it either.

Must’ve been produced in lesser number, or is just of greater value to collectors
