could replace knockout effect at a range with instead a weakening, or making the enemy become more tired (they get debuffs on their rolls)

Knockout is way too powerful to activate from long range (it's effectively a oneshot kill, barbs is melee because it makes it difficult to land and very high risk if it fails)

every level before the max level, you get to choose a mutation, the end result is that your character's playstyle is heavily influenced by those choices along the way

at max level you instead choose between 2 character specific ultra mutations that can drastically change your entire playstyle

so the character eyes for example has telekinesis, which slows down all bullets
projectile style ultra mutation will freeze their projectiles right next to them, only letting them go once they stop using TK

while enemy style ultra mutation will instead pull enemies closer

One favors clever use of freezing your own projectiles, and the other is better suited for melee

it's meant to be a pretty decisive choice in what you want your build to be like for your run
