SIGNAL GAMEPLAY THEORY:

You start the game either walking or devolved and crawling. Throughout the course of the game, you deliver messages/follow signals to earn funds/energy. With enough funds, you can get upgrades which improve your current state. From crawling, to walking, to hoverbike, to some kind of flight, to something beyond that, allowing you to gradually reach and traverse environments you couldn't previously. You will see other creatures in the sky from the very start of the game that you cannot interact much with till later (like how in metroidvanias you see places you can't reach till you acquire certain abilities) . Along the way, you compete with others like yourself, as well as some other creatures that may simply want a feast.

So, essentially a true evolution of what Animalmyn was conceptualized to be.

Well, the symbol is basically alchemy sign of mercury, so my assumption that it is the sea of mercury, aka Sick Liquid Metal (very poison)

since signal has more of a retro vaporwave aesthetic, while the alchemy ties are still very much likely, it's also likely a reference to the phrase "mercury is in retrograde", which means that from the perspective of the planet you're standing on, a planet's motion across the sky goes backwards after night compared to its usual direction for a certain period of time (which has often been tied to astrology stuff)

this matches up with the frequent rewinding of time seen in all the previous signal teaser videos

the term "mercury is in retrograde" is also frequently used in retro-vaporwave aesthetic communities

it'd honestly make sense as a player character, given that their previous 3D project, animalmyn, was cancelled over the signal project, and something like a strange humanoid-bird-thingy creature would make sense as an evolution to animalmyn's characters

joar has often tried his hand at various aerial creatures after all, originally having an idea for slugcat to be an aerial creature as well (scavs too later in development!) but settled on more grounded movement (for scavs too) because it was easier to design at the time

it'd also make a lot of sense out of clumsier movement on land, since you'd play as a creature with SEEMINGLY no legs, just long arms with wings and, seemingly, a long tail

someone in my server speculated that the area in the video and "feed drop" is a different world to the signals, and that whenever the mercury symbol shows up, we'll shift between worlds

what are these things?

well, i think it's possible they're an enemy type

possibly inspired by the skewers in wayne barlowe's expedition

joar was a fan of stuff like that after all iirc

skewers are self explanatory, flying predators that hunt their targets by sweeping down on them and skewering them with their face blades

it's possible one of these things knocked down the bird-like creature in the recent video

or, perhaps, another one of these birds

you can see one flying around in the background, after all

so the theory here is:

• you play as a flying semi-humanoid creature
• the mercury symbol represents shifting between two worlds
• one world is polluted with a purple sea, including blue and purple growths
• one world is a city with spires and red fluids, including red and pink growths
• red liquid possibly comes from the weird dead giant mutant creature thingy
• "skewers" that possibly act as some kind of coordinated hunters, possibly responsible for the death of the bird and the giant creature

also worth noting you can see some kind of flying creatures in the first signal video, possibly related to the "bird"

ok a couple things:

SIGNAL_003 has the Underhang leitmotif - this is important because it is a leitmotif that appears a few times, especially in "approaching iterator" areas, with Gate to the Shoreline and Underhang playing ingame, and Flutter and Glass Arcs
SIGNAL_005 has the same strumline as Threat - Outskirts; cannot really determine anything from this other than that the Threat - Outskirts melody leitmotif appears prominently in many songs in the game

Moon has a white pearl lore snippet about "sky-sails":
It's a catalog of bolts and screws for sky-sail joinery. We iterators were built for pragmatism, so it is an understatement to say that we were not known for our appreciation of beauty... but the sky-sails in flight during the big festivals always filled my soul with emotion.
If Signal is set in the past of Rain World (not that it necessarily is), the flying "skewer-esque" things in SIGNAL-003 could be these same sky-sails mentioned by her.

it'd be kinda odd if that were the case, considering some things radiate more "human-made" energy

but it's not entirely impossible

personally i've felt that these things have such RW vibes to them as a natural extent of this being the sort of "primary vibe" the devs tend to go for in general

joar tends to experiment with various concepts of "surrealist sci-fi" in some urban and industrial environments, where james tends to borrow similar motifs to his previous works befitting of the type of atmosphere he's trying to create
