joar man be a fan
Isn't vaporwave a couple of years now? Might be about time for vaporwave retro nostalgia? #chillingIn2016 #2016sunsets
speaking of joar, in hindsight joar had a lot of signal game foreshadowing on his twitter long before even the teasers
starting with that one video in january 2018 which seems to be some kind of prototype of it, complete with the greek statue heads
and then a lot of vague gamedev talk about some kind of game with g-force and a bunch of creature simulation
its starting to make me wonder what the rest of animalmyn's environments would've been like
james kinda implied it would be some kind of infinity of advertisements, animalmyn, insane mascots, random objects, trash, dirt, grime and other stuff
considering vaporwave stuff was even present in animalmyn, i wonder if it had like, palm trees and stuff
i guess the infinite grid type thing evolved into the purple ocean?
i know it wasn't only a grid of course, because it was supposed to have distinct area sections, which the suite themes were made for
ideal outcome

I wonder how far the game is into development. Since Animalmyn was cancelled in favor of the Signal project, and Animalmyn was cancelled/reworked into the new game pretty much at the end of 2017, I think it's safe to say the game has been in development roughly around 5 years already now.
Not to mention that one gif with greek statue heads back in Jan 2018.
(a good contender for the game's prototype stage)
It's most certainly not releasing this year, but 5 years could mean we may be getting close to at least potentially seeing what kind of game it is this year.
If not, then I wonder what's holding them back so hard that they can't even show us what kind of game it is. Either it's some kind of massive surprise, or, more unfortunately, perhaps their workflow wasn't as good as they thought it would be, and the entire game got reworked into something else. Though this may have been prior to the signal teasers, which would mean the game in its current state would still be incredibly early into its development cycle, assuming it wasn't a small game.
I remember seeing some posts that Joar was actually having tons of trouble while developing Animalmyn and expressing how he didn't understand the engine in 3D very well and how he needed a better workflow, so it's very possible.
I am willing to wait 5 for signal
yea
i wonder if workflow problems were the reason joar stopped using the devlogs, perhaps?
I'd wait a century for signal honestly, it all seems really cool
that would be odd considering joar did invest pretty heavily into developing RW even in the devlog days
sofanthiel is artificer's little drone buddy in MSC/downpour lmao
similar name scheme though
the orb is leliel
It's ages since I've watched NGE
i wonder how long james had this as his twitter banner
i tried looking through the waybackmachine and sadly it doesn't load twitter banner images
also does anyone have any possible idea of what this thing behind the tree could be besides "horrible the-forest-style skin mutant creature"
i don't think it moves? might be a dead mutant thingy like in the feed drop drawing
to me i just see something like this
forgot to mention i made this into a gif
i discovered something!
a spiraling swoosh of particle effects around the player/camera when it swings
might need to open the gif up to see it a bit better
60 FPS version, obviously harder to see though, i slowed down the other one on purpose
ill be back with more about it later
i see it
oh true
weird thing to include if it were just a camera made for environmental teaser purposes, looks like something that actually happens around the player in gameplay
methinks this is the effect for the player taking off
to fly
interesting concept
signal game to me feels like it'll either be a more seamless world with certain borders, or something closer to the "metaphorical elevators" of animalmyn
guys should i do it
should i make fanart including the canal bird we all know and love
you know something i like about signal game's purple water is that it's easy to reference for art, since the roughness and smoothness of it varies wildly between the videos, as well as its general saturation
it looks fairly different in each of them
HOLD ON ONE FLIPPETY FAZOOPY FERUNKLE FUCKING SECOND
what if the canal birds normally have something like a holographic projection in place of where their heads should be? kinda like the masks of the animalmyn
now i'm wondering if i should draw it like that
this time we are iggy,,,,
should i do that?
not sure if it looks better with the pristine, headless body or if i should add a mercury hologram or something
i don't think so, because the animalmyn didn't really need that
and it still looked good
they have no metal bits or anything like that, they're pretty much just crawling burnt corpses with hologram masks
yea buts thats a digital mall
i wonder what the lore reason was for animalmyn looking like burnt corpses, probably just the system giving them inherently unpleasant bodies for the sake of convincing them to work more in hopes of acquiring a better body
would signals biodome be digital?
i mean even outside of a simulated reality, you could still explain it as like, a projector behind the skin or something along those lines
true
Tree #5, with @Janaka_Lemon
very alien, very reminiscent of the video with the flappy fish-moth
wait
is this on the "bad moon" itself, or one of them?
you can see the curvature of the land and how small this place is
outer wilds vibes
Also is it me or is this more in line with the graphical quality of the actual signal game? The previous videos were far more detailed and realistic, but here the shapes and visuals are roughly among the same quality as the signal game.
i like how this was uploaded a day after that vague, spontaneous videocult tweet
wiggle wormies
yeah this looks a lot like the surface of the bad moon
it definitely seems larger than bad moon though, possibly related
man the more i look at it the more i feel like this one, unlike the previous ones, may very well just take place in-game
Also, interesting detail:
When the shadow passes over head, the "tube worms" retreat into the holes until it clears up. The thing is, some of them are already submerged in shadow. Is that really just another cloud passing over them, or is it something else?
Oh man, this is wild
I'm glad I watched ONE so I'd make the connection
It definitely does seem like those planets circling above the city house the environments seen in the other videos joar has made
Tiny biospheres circling another biosphere
The question is: what do the birds have to do with it?
Do they act as the medium between the two worlds?
Maybe the purple liquid acts as an energy source which the industrialized planet takes from the biospheres surrounding it
And the birds serve as transportation
Who knows
Regardless some crazy worldbuilding shit is gonna go down
Interesting detail on how the little wormies duck for cover when a shadow passes them
Could it be because of the birdies???

I have a theory that the "bird" is supposed to be some twist on "hermes bird" (a concept of the alchemical ripley scroll), as the greek equivalent of the god Mercury is Hermes. They're probably humans who have been reshapen into this image to serve some purpose for a greater, god-like power, which is probably what the strange moon with a face represents. The mini "moons" appearing over the earth below are probably an extension of its arrival.
Standeth the bird of Hermes
Eating his wings variable
And maketh himself yet full stable
When all his feathers be from him gone
He standeth still here as a stone
Here is now both white and red
And all so the stone to quicken the dead
All and some without fable
Both hard and soft and malleable
Understand now well and right
And thank you God of this sight ```
But also, what do you know! The hermes bird/hawk originally was human in the mythology! Hermes transformed two men, Hierax and Daidalon, into this bird.
The principle of this phrase is to say that, through self sacrifice, peace can be brought. Through self control, self-imposed limitations, we can bring safety and stability to the world.
Stuff like the strange small moons seemingly littering the skies and the strange growths, I theorize that there is some god-like alien entity in signal's world taking on the image of Hermes/Mercury, and that they probably collaborated with the higher powers in the human world, thus leading to an infested, millenia nostalgia art wasteyard over the earth.

I think that would be a fun twist on the concept of a first encounter, that they make collaboration with the corporate sludge corner of humanity and thus reshape the world accordingly. These beings may very well even come from another dimension entirely.
It's also possible that the moon isn't representative of Hermes/Mercury, because mercury in alchemy was also given the name "quicksilver", and the moon was symbolically represented with "silver" outright.
An interesting thing to note about alchemy is that some of the most important elements were:
- Sulfur
- Salt
- Mercury
- Gold
And in this video, which I strongly speculate to be a super early prototype of the signal game, the player has some kind of salt scanner, in the top left.
(here's the alchemical symbol for salt btw)
I have a hard time reading what it says in the other corners, sadly.
I like to imagine that, perhaps, the bird can launch some kind of scanner from where its head is missing, and thats what the perspective is here. That the thing between its shoulders is some kind of hole for ejecting that.
This would make a LOT of sense, given the symbolism of the mercury symbol.
Mercury (which is also one of the seven planetary metals) can mean both the element and the planet. In either case, this alchemy symbol represents the mind, as well as a state that could transcend death. In ancient times, mercury was known as quicksilver, and it was believed to be able to shift between liquid and solid states. Therefore, in alchemy, mercury was believed to shift between life and death.
It is interesting how the birds constantly disappear and then reappear, and pretty seamlessly too. Like they're fading from one world to the next.
Hermes is able to move quickly and freely between the worlds of the moral and divine, aided by his winged sandals, and also acts as a guide of souls into the afterlife.
TL;DR
- the canal birds are symbolic of hermes/hermes bird and can probably shift between worlds
- mercury/hermes are an interchangeable name
- there is likely a lot of alchemical symbolism here
- there is either influence from some kind of otherworldly force/beings using the image of human culture to represent themselves (greco-roman, alchemy and millenial nostalgia art) and probably collaborating with humanity's higher-ups
or
- humanity had long since experienced a massive scientific breakthrough at a nearly god-like level, to the point they can now alter worlds to their whims, and the various mutations, strange fauna and flora are an extension of that, as well as the strange "retrograde" happening to time
I really like this analysis!!

it looks like some sort of boat to me
might be an infested log like this one
yeah canoe is a more accurate one
i like the visual trickery here
perhaps
it looks like its covered in shadow, but if you look closer, there are actual growths all over it, and not just the shadow from the tree
looks kinda similar in shape to those bright green-cyan palm trees in the background of signal 001, but more green
also wots that back there
better image, it seems to share the same reflectiveness as the arm
it looks manmade, I don't think it's a log
Damn darthzz popped off
Looks like a face
this is such a blurry snip
i cant even see anything here
some old wreck?
yeah looking closer, it does kinda look like a canoe partially torn in half, possibly after a crash
yeah i know its that but still
ok
its still hard to tell what it is from here
You know looking back at the first signal video, it seems like the birds have a bit of variation? It's hard to tell, but some things like their wingspan and tails seem to be slightly different shapes and sizes.
I still like the theory that the signal game's world involves an alien collaboration with humanity, as an interesting twist on the concept of alien "invasions". That they, horrifyingly enough, do not destroy us, but join the higher-ups of humanity, and perpetuate the most corrupt systems in the worst way possible with their far more advanced technology. Capitalism knows no bounds.
That would indeed be a bruh moment
Capitalist aliens
I wonder if another reason for the switch in aesthetics between Animalmyn to signal game was because of Joar's disliking of cyberpunk stuff. Animalmyn had a vaguely cyberpunk-ish kind of vibe, even though it wasn't cyberpunk outright. And Joar really dislikes cyberpunk, because he thinks it's a stagnating aesthetic trying to recreate a gorgeous aesthetic of 70s sci-fi and never getting any better at it.
I mean, when I first saw these gifs before knowing what the game was, my first thought was that it was some kind of creepy cyberpunk dystopia they were making.
He realized he was the villain he sought to destroy, and put an end to it.
Industrial bio-engineered karmapunk is where it's at
i think tribal-industrial is a more simple way to put it
urban jungle, if you will
I wonder if Signal game will have any enemies that can skip time forward considering the time shenanigans and "retrograde". SOMA had a monster like that. Any time it was "teleporting", it actually wasn't teleporting at all, it was quite literally skipping forward the simulated world time. If you were to throw an object and then immediately look at this guy, your object would already be on the ground.
(the in-universe explanation in SOMA for how it was able to do that, is that it's using an EMP device on its head and temporarily shutting you off)
SOMA is such an interesting game, but I'm too scared to play horrors
good game
isn;t that the one where you change bodies because an AI took over or something
something like that, sorta
signal?
🫳🖐️🫰 🫴 🤚
i hope signal game can generate funny gifs like rain world did
new humorous sky primate behavior
Videocult makes profound games with immersive gameplay and unique worlds so that Discord users can make a gif out of them with the caption "The little scrimblo 🥺🥺🥺"
good
how it should be
it will feature the newly-revealed protagonist of signal (just a guy)
since signal game has a little bit of greek symbolism, what if buer is there
(ng+ character ^)
the hunter of signal game
huh
wh..... what is that??

buer
Buer is a spirit that appears in the 16th-century grimoire Pseudomonarchia Daemonum and its derivatives, where he is described as a Great President of Hell, having fifty legions of demons under his command. He appears when the Sun is in Sagittarius. Like Chiron, the chief centaur of Greek mythology, he teaches natural and moral philosophy, logic...
he has fifty legions of demon under his command :)

Scary!!
Jojo reference
flat fuck confirmed in signal game
wtf genre even is signal game's music
like honestly
it is not vaporwave at all
the 5th signal is some kind of synthwave but the rest are different
james has his own genre
jamescore
funny enough animalmyn had more directly vaporwave tracks, leaning more on a genre called... uh... well...
signalwave
i am not making this up
well, more specifically, mallsoft and signalwave, subgenres of vaporwave
Today, we explore the odd music genre known as "Signalwave" and what makes this bizarre corner of internet music so fascinating for its fans.

what is this?
"Bird" ~ Audio by @BRIGHTPRIMATE
I believe this is Bird
yeah but whats its role
we speculate that its the player character (or at least one of their stages) in the signal game and that they're basically an evolution of the animalmyn (the characters) concept
they have a similarly scrawny body, but instead of being charred black they're now pale white like all the structures and statues you see all over the place in the signal teasers, you can see they're vaguely humanoid from their backs, but their hands and forearms are replaced with wings
its unclear if they have any legs, and their head seems to be missing, though the shape from where its missing almost seems to suggest they can sort of... "retract" it in some form?
in the video you can see like 3 more of them in the distance, the most visible one leaving the sight from where it crashed, and is presumed to have attacked the bird
which would perhaps suggest they are competitive with eachother, like the animalmyn were supposed to be
i believe these birds are also very much visible in signal 001 and that the video is a distant recording of the actual game simulation taking place
here you can see one in the background either landing or falling behind those trees, and behind the purple bushes, you can see they are VERY much larger than the size of some seagull
they also keep disappearing and reappearing for some reason
also sometimes, like what's suggested in the canal bird video, you can see the birds in the background crashing into eachother and causing one of them to fall down
i dont have a gif of that at the moment
almost, but the main difference is the back, spine and arms, real birds dont look like that
will the game have battles?
this portion of their body is eerily humanoid
it could be "that one annoying enemy (think primal aspid)"
maybe
i have found a few vague comments joar made about some game he was developing some time long after he stopped posting animalmyn gifs, and animalmyn was pretty much cancelled/reworked into the signal game (until bones picked it back up) because it was deemed more interesting as a concept and had a better workflow for joar
some of the comments included mention of rendering 3D stages of hundreds of creatures with their own AI behaviors on top of that and was asking other people for tips on how to optimize that
a dumb theory i have is that the giant tower thing we see in one of the videos is a level's ending
as well as some vague comments about g-force simulation in a game
wait so i just got recommened a bunch of signal videos on youtube and im really confused 😕
is it RW related or a teaser for an unnanounced game or somehting else?
its another game
it's hard to say how "levels" work in this game honestly, it almost seems like this game is totally open world, but it could also function in "layers" like animalmyn
new game, not rain world
ok awesome
any ideas on what the mercury symbol is yet?
joar did say the game will be unconventionally designed like rain world, but not in the same way as rain world
i think he means that more in the sense you're experiencing the game as a "world experience" rather than as a conventionally "videogame-y game"
honestly as much as id love more rw i think it works better if i exists by itself
hope this new game will be just as weird and convuluted
for now we only have vague teasers, hopefully we'll see more after downpour's release
random question but whats your favorite part of the trailers?
the downpour ones?
o
well the atmosphere first and foremost, you can tell videocult is doing what they did with rain world, where they put a heavy emphasis on subtle environmental storytelling and visual worldbuilding with a very strict aesthetic focus
in rain world it was a tribal-industrial urban-jungle, in signal game it's a worn down millenial nostalgia art style wasteyard
other then how cool it looks i love the music
everyone is like "insert extremely long theory" while videocult goes "Haha funny beach level music"
you know speaking of, they did say some of the stuff from animalmyn, like the plastic patio chair, will be returning in the signal game, which honestly says a lot about the game's vibe
it's clearly going for some sort of "wasteyard of commerce" kind of vibe similarly to what Animalmyn was going for
yeah the music goes HARD
i once headbanged straight into a wall listening to signal number 5
i dont regret it tho
i remember james went to an actual reality party for adult swim and played a most peculiar tune back at like the start of 2020
a couple months later, we heard the song in full length, in signal 002
he played some RW music at the party too
one thing i love about rw is how even you can tell the world you're exploring is clearly created by some human like creatures as you can see huge industrial like structures and names such as "industrial complex" and "farm arrays" you can never quite pin point exactly what you're looking at and from what ive seen so far that seems to be the case in these signal videos
my favorite thing about rw is how unique the ai is
it's got the best artificial intelligence ive ever seen
if signal somehow does it better with the whole evolution concept i'll for sure consider it spore 2 in the best way possible
There are games with technically better AI, like Dwarf Fortress, but even that doesn't utilize it in the same way RW does where it feels truly immersive.
i think the reason the ai feels so good is even tho most creatures arent extremely complex its their interactions with the world that make it seem alive
it's crazy to think joar's seemingly trying a very similar thing, but in 3D, with a very different style of gameplay
if we get flying mechanics im gonna go insane
also i saw this comment on the signal 3 video and im wondering where this quote comes from i dont remember her saying this from any pearls?
i love games w flying (im 100% biased for exo one)
tbh when you think about it from a technical standpoint, that also gives more credence to the bird creature being the animalmyn "stand-in" for signal game, because it'd probably be easier to make the "clumsiness" of crawling on land a lot more believable, since of course they don't even have hands
i hope signal can make funny gifs like rw and animalmyn can
not to mention creating a physics-based character and making them move around a lot can be easier to develop in a more intuitive way if they're more aerial, as a lot of flying sims have been doing this for a while
same
i can't wait to faceplant straight into the purple fluid
this discord on the day signal releases just posting headless bird man memes
lean
one thing i hope signal has is some sort of emoting system
like backflips in rw but more cosmetic
damn signal 5 got some banging music
very good vibes debuting new songs at @adultswimgames #ActualRealityParty 🌴🌴
here's the first time a signal track was debuted
oh cool
fr tho backflipping bird
wait are all the signal tracks made by james?
yeah
and if signal is online we need bird pvp
in fact iirc the entire videocult team is back for signal game with more or less the same roles
joar's doing all the coding and the general foundation of the game, james does the music, worldbuilding, and business stuff, lydia is also probably there (almost everything james has worked on had her as well), and miimows also confirmed in this server she was doing artwork for the signal game
i have a stupid ass idea that's never gonna be cannon
anyway, wanna hear it?
ok so
spinning pink mercury
weird lean sea
the sea is made of some kinda alien equivalent to our mercury
maybe its kinda like the torrential rain
it just happens once in a while
and kills everything on sight
hmm, if it kills everything on sight, then it's curious how it seems to have stained the beaches, and yet has plants still thriving there
i have a feeling this is gonna be quite a different game from rainworld so i think its gonna have a very differnt gameplay loop
it feels more like some sort of worldwide interference that life started adapting to
i have like 3 braincells lmao
im way too stupid for this chat
i wonder if they're gonna make dying in game be something thats actually explained lorewise
funni bird man falling down and splatting into a pool of blood/feathers is good enough for me
as long as we can die
anything is ok
signal game seems to take place in human reality, unlike rain world, due to various aspects
- the palm trees (which seem to have been altered)
- the "altered baobabs" in signal 005
- the crane in signal 005 (REMEMBER THIS ONE ITS BIG)
- the recognizable oil rig stuff in signal 006
- canoe??? in signal 001
- THE HANDS. There are so many greek statue bits everywhere, a true staple of vaporwave and millennial nostalgia art. You can even see a body in signal 004 further to the right. And heads in what seems to be an early prototype teaser for the signal game back in 2018.
this list further extends if you factor in the vague joar videos as well
wheres the crane?
O h
So, I believe this to be the top of a building, rather than an oil rig.
i have another dumb theory but this time it makes a little bit of sense
More specifically... I believe it to be the top of this building.
"Bad moon" ~ Audio by @BRIGHTPRIMATE
so, you know the big atmosphere towers that appear in 04?
a rainworld-esque envionment in 3d is gonna be a sight to behold
what if they kinda generated the sky? like made a light source up to cover something?
The shape of the crane is exactly the same, and if you do a bit of research, you'll find this crane is more common for urban usage in construction and such, oil rig cranes are very different.
since we see thin transparent layers
yeah my general theory is that the main game world of signal game probably takes place in some kind of bio-dome being held up by the tower in signal 003
quite possibly, perhaps humans have reached god-like potential and the higher-ups have altered the world drastically, the statues representing what they once were, reaching up into the heavens, where their creators reside
fake sky and a past human civ
yeah something like that
this artwork has similar vibes to signal 003 and the canal bird video combined
there's even a big spire in the distance
yeah the giant meat "man-centipede" is pretty freaky, even moreso when you realize what the title of the artwork is implying
yeah
someone dropped this thing over this little town expecting it to be devoured
i just call it "canal bird" since its easy to understand what it refers to
yeah
damn i kind of wish it was completly alien tho kind of like rw in that way
but i guess not enough has been revealed to make to many assumptions
they make a re-appearance in "Bad Moon"
you can see them and their long arms, flying under the moon
return of the kings
and after that, you can see a strange flying "worm" thing going under it
looks similar to the worm from the "prototype" video
but 3D
it even has the same colors seemingly? hard to tell due to the distance
loads of other flying creatures up there as well
im sorry but the moon looks like a meatmall 💀
meatball man :)
meatball moon
the way this is moving it makes it seem like its being recorded by someone from below with a handhel camera
i had a theory that signal game's world is a collaboration between the corporate higher-ups around earth and some kind of alien entity
that would be a pretty unique kind of post-contact disaster
im still curious about the mercury symbol tho
Must be the economy or mercury is out of retrograde or something 📈🪐♊️🕯
every time the symbol shows up in the video, "retrograde" happens
time will suddenly keep reversing and acting wonky
now the emojis
Mercurial Retrograde
signal is still a better name
also
Tree #5, with @Janaka_Lemon
tiny planet
IMO this looks to be another thing similar to the "bad moon" but larger
p cute
could just be a camera lens effect
what if the game was a time travelling flight simulator?
with a planet system
the way this is rendered is... different from other realistic renders in joar videos, in terms of the graphical quality
it's a lot closer to the signal game's graphics, especially when you look at the rocks
imagine if signal had the realistic graphics as an option
my pc would burn but for a good reason
might be a bad comparison since signal 001 just had very pointy rocks, but you get the idea
WAIT WAIT I HAVE AN IDEA
honestly whatever this is it's gonna make rw look pretty normal by comparison
Bad moon bossfight
also, to add further credence to the "sky dome" theory, this happens when the camera pans over the back of the spire
fake sun
the vaporwave sun looks fake too
an articial world made by some mysterious beings hmmmmmmm
fun fact: that one isn't even in the background, it's a cleverly utilized video overlay on the screen
oh cool
good moon
you can see them in signal 004
the craters look like a face
it's somehow asleep
i wonder if it has anything to do with what james has in his twitter description, considering he confidently put the signal hands there as well
realistic render of them
Tree #2, with @Janaka_Lemon
joar uses that same sky gradient in a couple other 3D videos that may be signal game teasers
funky manta
Tree #3, with @Janaka_Lemon
ok after listening to all of the signals in full ive got to say 5 is my favourite (music wise) followed closely by 2
ayy same
also what the hell is that down there in the corner
6 in third place
it looks like something flowing out of a hole or pipe in the ground
bottom left in the video, past the bush
either just the fog or a small thing
also these same red and pink plants appear in the canal bird video, overgrowing the canal
there are also a bunch of strangely thrown around "FEEDFRWD" tapes over the canal, which likely mean "feedforward", which is the opposite of feedback
i cant tell if its blood or just polluted water honestly
maybe it's the same thing as in the pink ocean
but a variant
i like to imagine these 2 paintings are also roughly the same area as the canal bird video
also-
RIP that man, just got his feathers stained
what remains of humans as we know them live in a literal wasteland trash heap, the remnants of commerce
i just noticed the red flip flops
if they're not equippable i dont want the game /hj
hard to tell if the figures in the painting are even normal humans or not
too stylized and "abstract" to see in full detail
time to feast...
anyways, i wonder why the "feedforward" tapes are there in the canal bird video
im still a bit confused by what feedforward really means
the modification or control of a process using its anticipated results or effects.
or more specifically how it could be applied here
cuz feedforward is a concept based around providing future-oriented options or solutions
time travel
i could see that tying in closely with the "retrograde mechanic" in some form
looks like time is constantly in retrograde and your goal is to break free from that
oh god another cycle game
shoulda seen it coming smh
but that would honestly make that very clever, making a teaser out of that
providing subliminal, foreshadowing messages before giving us the hint about the possible player character
ik that this wont happen but it'd be p cool if the main character had "drawn on" eyes to contrast with the 3d
like the animalmyn holograms?
kinda
i was gonna say "surely they wont have cycles be a part of another game" but at the same time if will definetly be used differently
and yeah the circles in 5 make is pretty obvious to some degree
here's a thing i drew, and here's a doodle of something i considered adding to it
i was unsure if it would look good though, so i didnt include it
aparently someone elses sees the mercury as canal bird's head lmao
very cool 👍
but it would be interesting if that "hole" where the head should be projected a hologram
i actually have a concept like that
sadly can't see anything like that in any other place the bird makes an appearance
we share a single braincell /j
fr tho i love the art
no idea on how you did the textures but theyre great
"grape juice "
mmmmmm signal sea water
all of a sudden i feel like drawing canal bird
joar sees canal bird fanart
shit they know
signal game reveal delayed by 3 more years, no more teasers

slugnose
i hate it
same energy
scary
now we need canal bird w a real human head
maybe it does have one but keeps it retracted in flight for some reason
inflatable head
you know if signal game has a similar evolution mechanic thing to animalmyn, i could see there being a "sea stage" or something
with canal bird being the "flight stage" or something along those lines
Look mom i;m on tv!!
oop gtg
shotgun
oh damn
could you tell me where the quote is from?
because i dont remember it myself
ok while we're at it, back to the fun facts
you can see a faint "swoosh" effect" when the camera swings in signal 006
lemme go get it
its from grey pearl dialogue
I think it's the default response for when moon has one neuron
nah
oh
its random grey pearl dialogue
oh
I see
thats why i dont recognize it
damn new piece of the lore i never knew about
damn so they had fetivals in the sky and shit thats really cool
thing i never noticed: foggy distant structures in signal 006
look normal
before a certain angle switch, you can see some being emitted by this machine here
the structures in 002 are very rain worldy to me
i like the part in signal 006 where everything goes red for some reason
canal bird brainrot
epic
:D
the 3 horsemen of videocult protagonists
the horror
ok here's something i don't think anyone has mentioned before
the purple fluid looks... different, in each teaser
signal 001 and signal 002 fluid are more or less the same, pretty clear and vaguely metallic, almost looks like grape juice
in signal 005 however it looks a lot more sludge-like and more opaque
and in signal 006 it's more pink, and it's more polluted
it's not even just the color though, but also the behavior of the fluid
maybe it changes over time
tasty poison ocean/j
drink woter
this man tried to do so, and failed miserably
soggy wings :(
(apologies for posting this image a bunch but we dont have a lot of canal bird images lol)
lol
Tree #6, with @Janaka_Lemon
WOAHH
what's going on with that shadow
also it seems like it's keeping up the trend of the pink and red plants from the previous videos, inside that dome
to me it says a lot that there's so much more going on in these videos and yet the title simply focuses on the "tree" aspect, even if it's not the most eventful thing in these videos
i think the strange chairs could imply more about the anatomy of whoever lives here
also you can see some sort of sea outside the window and some mountains or hills
can't tell what color the sea is due to the distortions and humidity of the glass
mantis people chairs
NEW SIGGAL
new ancient living block
you can see a sea outside the window, which means this is the pre-iterator era
this is clearly ancient archeologist-welder Zal
Real
birg
🕊️
me when i reduce a portion of humanity into man-birds to deliver signal messages and fight amongst eachother like beasts
I like this house
(if it is even actually a house idk)
im like 95% sure the water outside the house is purple
The humidity in the globe seems to be clear water tho
or maybe it's just too thin to see color
no i mean past the globe
you can see a window past the globe and outside are some mountains and water
i know
I wonder what the fossile on the wall belongs to
i do want to note there is some kind of red fluid seeping out of the tree
kinda looks like some sort of lizard or rodent
is it me or do these people keep scrolls in the ceiling?
this is what i see from the shadow
looks like some really lanky humanoid strumming something
is that ghost alien from ben tennesessee
I can't see it as anything else than some sort of turtle-human with a stick
this one is more accurate actually
this is what i see
hmm i see a bit more limbs than that actually
and the head seems thinner
actually this
something a bit like this
i bet in reality its something very different lol
there's no way it's actually like this
amnesia rebirth ghoul concept art lookin' ass
hmm
kinda looks like its stirring something?
the chairs also heavily imply its something that somewhat rests on its belly
with the lower part being for the back of its body
so, presumably something with a long body, like a worm or centipede
the more I look at it, the more it seems like what I thought was it's hesd might actualli be just another limb
yeah
weird
might be another canal bird situation
no head on those shoulders
what if canal bird is a human reshaped into something like themselves?
........
the house pede-man
ok what i previously thought was an arm claw thing, looks like it has a hand going over it
someone needs to rotate the video and then squash it a bit
here's roughly what I think I see (sometimes, it looks like it's sitting on legs, sometimes, it looks more like it could be a long centipede thing)
I can't tell if it has a head on a very long neck or just many limbs and no head
looks like a head at the beginning, but then it seems to unfold or something and it looks like a claw-limb-thing
maybe it just has a weird head
like the weird humanoid thing in tool's music video for opiate squared
probably

dark lyrics warning
but this thing's head is like
very strange
hand :)
but yeah this is close to what i see in the joar gif
just some weird very vaguely humanoid creature that can stretch itself in strange ways
that has to be one of the weirdest videos i've watched in a while.........
it's uh
one of tool's more normal videos
most of their videos use stop-motion
they all have a very similar visual style though
creepy lanky humanoids doing really weird stuff symbolic for cerebral concepts
Ye I think I've seen one some time ago

a guy literally just fucking ascends in this one
scav sitting on a toilet
well, that's one interpretation for the shadow
what is animalmyn even
it's from a blank pearl
game videocult was making that they cancelled/reworked into the signal game
Scrapped game about emojis in a deteriorating cyber mall
bones
how you gonna remake it if it doesn't exist
...by remaking it?
yeah but how do they know what it's like
james gave bones a lot of info
Basically everything
oh ok
well i will play animalmyn when it releases
once bones stops their 3799738 project
basically you start the game crawling around among others like yourself and your goal is to earn enough energy/funds to evolve your form, as the digital mall around you starts to deteriorate over time

james said he'd like to step in if the project picks up more momentum
dont wanna invest in another project that gets cancelled, of course
what's that
bones tried to remake rain world once
and managed to make a seamless level editor with it
it looked pretty decent actually
that sounds cool
i wanna use that actually
cause i've been wanting to make levels but am to idiot to use the dev one
he's been improving the models of the animalmyn
gotta keep in mind he's making it from scratch and was never given the same assets from the original animalmyn
not to mention he's developing it in godot, whereas joar's animalmyn was in unity
is this public to useplease
🥹
as far as i know, no
and it doesn't work on actual rain world

has videocoolingsystem made any games aside from rain world and signal
no
joar made a bunch of smaller games before rain world
rain world is simply his first released major game
though not his first attempt at it
he had another major project idea in mind previously back in 2008 called "freethinker"
Some basic movement shown in a forest landscape. The purple mushrooms are made of a low friction material, making the freethinker slide when walking on them. The visibility of the mouse and any other HUD is of.
physics platformer where you played as a guy with a tendril for a head
you hopped around on fungus and branches and stuff
freethinker guy is the precursor to slugcat
he also learned procedural animation from his game "space worms"
My latest project Block Towers is finished! It's a multiplayer on one keyboard game, with gamepad support. The video shows some basic gameplay with two players.
The game is free, download it here:
http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=8078.0
there's also this game as well
i think you can still download this one
there's also 3 others i know of from his old portfolio website
pretty much all of his games involve physics in some form and strange worlds to go with them
oh yeah also you can still download these games
sadly still haven't found a download for space worms yet

Good news, you can still find it via Wayback Machine! That's how I finally got it back after losing my files.
wtf
where'd you find that
comes from joarportfolio apparently but i couldn't find it on there???
Yeah I have no idea if you can reach it from the portfolio either
I just used the download link from the TIGforum.
speaking of
i wonder if this site will ever be updated
VIDEOCULT is an independent videogame studio based in Boston MA, focusing on the development of games with a slightly esoteric flavor. We are interested in creating clever Artificial Intelligences, immersive sandbox ecologies and emotionally rich gaming experiences that will stay with you long after you have set the controller down.
i like this description
Haha yes I like how outdated the official Videocult site is, when you need to make a reference you always have to link to Twitter or something instead lol.
i hope they update it after signal game is announced, at least
Yeah it looks good! I'd love to see it used again.
Signal Netflix adaptation when
canal bird slice of life anime
signal gacha game
Rain World beach episode
wait i just found out you can easily turn twitter links into mp4s by putting .mp4 at the end of the link (and vxtwitter)
im gonna download the joar videos
i love this video
the way the worms retreat in response to the shadow implies that they tend to be hunted by flying animals
which is interesting
yeah, especially since some of them are clearly active even when already covered in shadow, so they're definitely reacting to the movement more than anything
reminds me a bit of how the frill-hair-things on this tree retreat when the fish-moth flies by
i think pretty much all these joar animations have a reoccurring theme of flight (except for the red tree video, which is more focused on the sky)
signal will be real in 2 seconds
jk signal is real
they are fun
lean beach
sig null
random fact: the shape of the mercury symbol came to be, because it symbolically represents the shape of mercury's winged cap (the "devil horns" are the wings)
we definitely getting a flyin' game
Lean

purple liquid sure is one weird way of storing memories
cabinet beasts in signal?
100% sure
Signals have a frequency, the average time between Signal Twitter teasers is 15.875 days. Therefore the frequency of Signal is approximately 7.29e-7 Hz.
👁️
O, wise ones, choose with care what to do with the words I spake
since we're most likely not getting a signal teaser any time soon, probably not even this year, i hope we at least get more vague joar videos soon
imagine the day one of them is posted that blatantly reveals itself to be signal related
speaking of, is that terrain back there really, really low res and smudgy or am i seeing things?
there's a weird black thing back there and i can't tell if it's just glitchy terrain or what
hmm what if i ranked the joar videos based on how likely they are related to signal game
Oh yeah I referred to the Joar videos as "Signal Twitter teasers" here
Ordered from most likely related, to least likely related:
- "Bird"
- Tree #3 (red forest)
- "Bad Moon"
- Tree #2 (has the purple fish-moth)
4.5. Tree #1 (very similar to tree 2 but not much to look at) - Tree #5 (the tubeworm ditch)
- Tree #4 (the sprout)
- Tree #6 (the recent one, house with a terrarium)
"Bird" is in the #1 spot because I'm pretty damn near certain you can see them in Signal 001, and they also make a reappearance in the sky of "Bad Moon". Many aspects of the bird design have multiple good reasons to be a significantly related creature to the signal game.
Tree #6 is the lowest because it has the least visual relations and similarities compared to the others. The only parallel it has, woulkd be the plants in the terrarium sharing that same pale pink and red color consistent in the some of the other videos. Otherwise it looks completely different from any other.
i still can't tell what color the water is in tree 6 though
i feel like that could be important to know
There is blue light being reflected around the window that could suggest it's blue, however the more I look at that, the less I'm convinced it's actually from the water outright. You see, there's also a plant past that window, and the reflections seem to originate from the direction of said plant. There are clearly more things out there we simply can't see.
The water looks purple-ish from the distortions of the terrarium's glass, but because of how humid it is in there, it's impossible to tell.
Not to mention that light bouncing off the red of the plants could easily interfere with that.
If I color pick through the sphere, I just get a grey color.
If I boost the saturation, it looks more clearly blue, but that could just be that, a natural result of saturating an image further. However, more interestingly is that it gives a clearer view of the land outside. The right side of the window seems to not be water at all, but rather, mostly sand and rock.
Increasing the contrast makes the land outside even more visible.
Uhhh...
I think I just made a terrifying discovery.
Could you add the signals into this list?
look past the arm
on second thought
good christ what is that
btw here's signal 001 but with the inverse filter used in signal 003 just for funsies
You can see that whatever is past the arm shares very similar values, like it's made of the same material. The other images I posted of it even seem to suggest it has an arm and shoulder. Might be another one of those greek statue pieces.
But from certain angles, it looks like the bad moon.
like here
signal 002 inverted looks cool ngl
menacing
signal 003 with the inverse filter
here's the actual inverted part of the video, not edited by me
and here's the inverted scene from the video, restored!
i wonder if parts of the game will actually use the inverse filter
the void
very scary
signal trail cam
Moon
I think I already suggested this
idk this thing seems smaller and closer to the ground
it's rising
anyone know the real world parallel to these btw? the thing in the top image
pretty sure they're real
idk their name tho
kind of reminds me of an oil pump
looks like a face looking at me .............
also why does this looks like it has a giant flower or something in the sky?
oh that's just the funny perspective i took the snip from, normally that's just the strange glow that appears between the segments of the spire
the spire has a very weird design
i see
the segments themselves look pretty crude and not all that technologically advanced, and yet the glow separating them suggests some pretty crazy level of technological capabilities
imagine how this spire looks more zoomed out
makes you wonder why they have to be segmented like that in the first place, rather than just one consistent shape going straight upward
Maybe the top can hover highier or lower and change the size of the spire ....
?
but for what purpose 👁️
note that every segment has wires connected to it, going straight up into the sky
making the roof higher?
also god damn every time i watch this video i still don't expect how utterly massive those sky rays really are
OR...
touching moons?
maybe the game really does take place in a simulation and each of these houses each layer, like in animalmyn
and each of these layers are being extracted by some celestial beings outside the dome for some strange purpose
celestial or advanced beings
could be human, could be alien, could be an AI, could be something much stranger
extracted?
yeah like
maybe there's something they're trying to gain from running these simulations
like in animalmyn
or kind of like how iterators run simulations with void fluid and such
before they do anything drastic with their weird experiments
i love how this seems to look at us, whatever it is. So creepy......
might not be a face tbh, i can easily see that being the hair of a greek statue and the position and lighting making it look like a face
whatever it is, it shares similar texturing to the metal arm
more apparent here ^
huh i noticed something
the further up the spire goes, the more space there is between the segments
and the glow between those segments get bigger
and the video glitches and then reverses backwards before we get to see what's at the top

the more i listen to this, the more i hear a similar motif of signal 005, though the start is slightly different
starting from 0:30
█̵█̶█̷█̷█̶█̵█̴█̴█̴█̷ ̴1̸0̴0̸%̷
̵
̶[̷S̴i̶g̴n̷a̴l̸_̷0̶0̷5̸]̷ ̶r̷e̷a̸d̷y̶ ̶t̵o̷ ̴v̴i̴e̵w̶
̵
̴
̵
it starts at 0:30 in signal 005 too
my theory is that Signal 005 is a bop
real
this is not at all what I expected the canal birds to look like
wait no this is probably a different thing
i love this post very cool
it is
imagine being a canal bird and then this thing starts chasing you in the sky
live valley bird reaction
this creature is kind of ghibli-esque
looks like me when i wake up in the morning
like yubaba's bird form or howl
what the heck is that

the area doesn't feel very signal but the creature very much could fit
fitting color scheme and the face could be a fun twist on the greek statue aesthetic
almost like the environment has been that way for so long that it kinda "rubbed off" on the creatures there
so stuff like this creature and the canal bird retain traits similar to the statues
this means there must be hand monsters
it has human legs?
face-bird with human knee
and the canal bird has human upper arms, shoulders and torso
though canal bird's has less abrupt contrast so it's less creepy looking compared to this thing
some real bayonetta 2 design going on with this bird
I think they are just experimenting with Blender. it is unlikely that all the videos are linked together within the same game universe.
some of them absolutely are, especially the canal bird video
the one thing that brings me doubt for this new video is mostly the location
you have link for canal bird video?
"Bird" ~ Audio by @BRIGHTPRIMATE
this bird makes a reappearance in the "bad moon" video from far away
and you can see eerily similar birds in signal_001
like, at first they just look like seagulls, but if you actually pay attention to their scale, the way they're moving, the way they're interacting, and how lanky they look, they're incredibly similar to the canal bird
maybe, but you can find structures like that even nowdays
i've seen some like that while walking on trails
ohh
omg Signals x Life crossover
a lot of joar's artwork, in terms of their settings, are largely based off of places he visits, and a good chunk of that bleeds into his games too
i think it's possible that if this recent video were connected, then it'd probably have to be earlier in the timeline, just as everything started to change or whatever, cuz otherwise aside from the creature looking like something that would fit the signal aesthetic, the landscape is drastically different
the canal bird video does have a similar vibe to this painting
i like all the excessive jet trails and the strange spire in the background
this is definitely canal bird setting
concrete makes it apparent
the moon in signal 004 is shaped like that btw
in fact it seems to distort closer to the moon face shape as the video progresses, i'm pretty sure it's rotating
valley of thorns setting looks relatively safe environment. the green mountains and clear sky
buildings are mostly intact
yeah, and signal game's environment has mostly purple, blue and red plants everywhere
not to mention the purple seas, the excessive industrial wasteyard, and the strange tech
and of course the greek statues
more close to earth than some alien planet
yeah
it's more like some kind of significantly altered environment kind of setting
the whole aesthetic of the signals is pretty much "retro nostalgia wasteyard"
it has clear vaporwave inspiration (and a bit of outrun) mixed together with the worn down urban-industrial aesthetics videocult is known for
and the fact that things are worn down is what makes me somewhat doubt the simulation theory
The other reason I see connecting between the canal bird and the signal game aside from seemingly already being in the first video is that, design-wise, they literally look like a technical evolution of the Animalmyn design. Similarly scrawny humanoid body, but with wings added on, colored pale white akin to some of the statues and structures, and the head strangely missing.
(i also want to note that the horns on the mercury symbol are meant to represent the wings on the god mercury's hat)
Not to mention, I feel like coding a flying procedurally animated 3D creature is a lot easier to make convincing compared to something that's supposed to crawl around a lot and look convincing while doing so. And even if it still looks clumsy while crawling around, it'd still look convincing, considering the creature seemingly doesn't even have hands on those wings.
Gif mostly related.
(and yes it has been at least confirmed signal game will still have procedural animation, as well as a return of the plastic patio chair we all know and love)

I want to hang on from them to glide away
rain world temporary update system such as grapple worm
I like the creature=item idea.
they seem pretty massive
imagine if they have a landing platform
visually they remind me a lot of skewers from wayne barlowe's expedition
...which also had and amoebic sea.
a purple, amoebic sea.
broo, how do you know all that stuff
idk!!!
i dont think the purple water was inspired by expedition though, since purple water is just a general vaporwave aesthetic thing
the latest joar video was retweeted on the videocult account 👁️
I wonder who manages the videocult account
james primate
oh
james also has his own account (he retweeted it there too)
he even has the signal 004 hands as his background :)
joar is the lead dev of videocult games
james also does the sound, music, lore, worldbuilding, level design and stuff
they are still a small team?
from the looks of it, the team will be the same for the signal game
joar, james, miimows/del and lydia
i actually don't know how involved lydia is, but lydia is always there where james is, so it's kind of inevitable that she will be involved
its gonna be interesting for sure. since the more ambitious project but same guys
wow dream project of him
I'm pretty near certain the main reason they're being so vague for now is to keep rain world in the spotlight, and while rain world is in the spotlight, they can't really show us much of their new game without RW totally overshadowing it.
Andrew did confirm that Videocult's primary development focus is on the signal game and that it's in full production right now, so we do know that, at least.
that is good news
Darthzz is the guy
Darthzz is darthzz
(technically i am writing a webcomic) 👁️
send me a pdf copy of it if you'd like early reception
Me too
I noticed every Joar video that doesn't have "tree" in the title is clearly being shot through someone's camera.
In "Bird", someone is walking through the ditch with their phone/camera and then stops to zoom in on the bird. In "Bad Moon", someone is recording the moon through their camera while they're inside a car or public transport of some kind. In "Valley of thorns", it's not quite as "shaky" as the other videos, but the bird clearly does notice and respond to whatever the perspective is from, and seemingly lunges for it.
Like someone set up a tripod there to film.
Seems to go between "found footage" and "nature documentary"
