It's kinda hard to really deduce what went down with Saint, and there are alot of theories about what exactly took place here yeah

Saint has forsaken ascension and is willingly stuck on a cycle to ascend the creatures of the world, it is utterly selfless in nature
For this it attacks the void worm that tries to ascend it, which results in it being kicked out of the void, and when it comes back it is forced to survive in the rubicon, a place containing memories familiar to the slugcats of time bygone, who made the jorney to pebbles to seek ascension, or for their own personal goals, and contains alot of the dangers these creatures had to deal with.
Then once Saint is done serving it's punishment and wakes up from the rubicon, it attacks the void worm again to go through it all again
