I need to get the fuck outta this place
Welcome Gordon Freeman
The crocodiles fly. There's monsters using weapons against me. There's a flying turkey. Definitely Black Mesa
Industrial Complex (Black Mesa)
Currently pleading for my life in a place which I suck at navigating
I jumped off the roof once and it turns out I'm not fully immune to fall damage
Yeah if you fall 2 screens straight (approximatly) it becomes deadly
Want help or you got this?
Nah I'm doing pretty alright
Just kinda lost but I played Hollow Knight I'm familiar with that feeling
That's good!

I've never been tilted this much since Celeste. Not even League can make me mad the way this game does. Which is a sign that I need to lock in and conquer this game the way I did the other two.
I chose the basic "class" so I could experience the game "normally" before delving into any extra stuff and these first six cycles have been nothing normal. The rain is evil. The plants are evil. The bugs fly and they're 20 meters long. The crocodiles keep killing each other and I have to pray to God I'm not next.
There's a Half-Life ass power plant that I assume I need to be on a specific cycle to enter judging by the extremely cycle-esque symbol on it. The map is confusing. I don't know what I'm doing. The plants keep killing me.
A word of advice, if you want it:
||Rain World is indeed hard, but it is often not hard in the ways that, say, Hollow Knight or Celeste are hard. Your skills do not necessarily carry over, do not fool yourself into thinking you can rely on them
||
I've definitely noticed that this game is way different to the type I usually play and I'm getting used to the fact that running away is the best move 99% of the time. The platforming is also very weird but still fun and I hope the game has more movement to teach me later
The game has very elaborate possibilities with movement
There's an actively updated 150 page google doc on rain world movement
The movement taught in the tutorial is the only that is mandatory for progressing the gane though
I see
Bold of you to expect to be taught
Find new parkour tricks through experimentation, and master them through practice.
Yeah rainworld is a game where you don't upgrade by getting stronger, you upgrade by getting smarter
All the potential you ever needed to succeed is in your feeble body from the opening day, just gotta learn how to use yourself as well as the environment
Welcome back Celeste I guess
I found out what the rain does
I also have seen three different flying turkeys by now
And have been killed/almost killed by:
- Alligators (like 5 kinds)
- Plants
- Flying turkeys
- Cultists???
- The rain
Awesome that you got to industrial complex before sering the rain btw
beware for the turkeys xD
I saw the rain
And I promptly fucked off before it could get me
And I never saw what it actually does
The second time it started falling I tried to find a resting spot asap but I accidentally got to the roof and just saw what looked like fucking holy fire descending from the sky
This has been my strategy so far
I've killed a grand total of one enemy
Every time I see something I don't like I get the fuck out
One of the plants threw a sticky bomb at me I hate this Black Mesa ass place
Unfortunately this was right after one of those cycle doors so I need to go to sleep more and die less if I want to go back there
You were erased from existance right then and there lol
Good luck mate! and how are you doing so far?
Kinda went on like a three-death streak
It's mostly the alligators surprisingly
Probably just cuz they're so common
The turkeys I've mostly just been calm and steady when dealing with and just wait until they leave so I can sneak around through the little passageways in the floor
I've also had issues where I struggle to enter a passageway cuz I'm kind of imprecise
That's good, the turkeys truly have nothing on you
I've learned long ago that I am not a fighter by any means and I don't even know if I can physically kill this thing
I've yet to find an NPC though I know they exist cuz I slightly spoiled myself
I don't know who any of them are
You may have already been trailing one all along
I assume you are following your "guide" since you are heading east
What guide
Oh is this a hint
this mf
Oh
No I'm just going randomly lol
OHHH IS THAT WHY HE SHOWS A SLUGCAT SOMETIMES?
THERE ARE OTHER MFS LIKE ME?
That also works too
Maybe he might know where your family is? :O
Oh I forgot I have a family
What in the world is my family in Black Mesa for
They might be looking for you, or regardless this just might be the entire world for them
I'm gonna call that it's like a 70% chance they're dead or partially dead
I'm very interested in what these cycles are
Feels like they have plot importance
Judging by the lettering system and the cycle-limited doors
Though that could just be a game mechanic to prevent you from getting too far ahead
It's interesting how many things have "strings"
The Turkey kind of does, the plants mostly do
You can access any place in the game at any time
Just dependent on how good at survival you are
Not sure if that's just a coincidence/surveillance bias or some sort of evolutionary connection between them, perhaps by whatever post-apocalypse thing happened
What about the doors tho
Good rest and a filled stomach can take you anywhere in this run down hole
Meet a door's symbol requirements and good to go
The game is nonlinear and any area will have multiple outlets to find
Absolutely
So every playthrough is unique
Yeah but those are cycle-dependent
Familiar with that, it's a metroidvania isn't it?
Or kind of like one
Doesn't really have the backtracking w/ new skill parts so I guess it's just a nonlinear action-adventure
The game is not really a metroidvania
It's indie and 2d and pixelly
And there the similarities sorta end
If you mean the number counter, no
Nonlinear action-adventure is basically 60% of the way there
Then what is it
I had to get to a specific symbol to get there
And that took sleeping
So it's cycle-dependent
The number just goes up and up just to keep count
Yeah but what I mean is I need to go through cycles to get there
I can't pass on cycle 1 for example
That's true, technically
No upgrading or leveling system, equipment, or bosses
Best way to think of rain world is for what it is, an ecosystem
I wouldn't say the latter two are necessary for a Metroidvania
Ori TBF doesn't have bosses and I don't recall an equipment system either (aside from the skill tree)
An ecosystem sim where you are a humble creature interlocking in a foodchain
No skill tree in rw either
you have had everything you need to eventually beat the game in just your squishy body
The game has an underlying story and an actual ending but they play second fiddle to the gameplay, the meat of the game is in immersing into and learning to survive the ins and outs of an expansive openworld environment
It's a weird comparison but I've seen people say it's ever so slightly like minecraft
Definitely bizarre to say
l guess l do see it, ever so slightly
The exact meaning should become clear to you soon enough, but right now it's a system that you are rewarded for "conquering" a region by eating food and then hybernating withoud BECOMING the food with getting access to other areas, if you die you go down and are forced to engage in the predator or prey cycle again until you have clearance
Let me make it clear that death is NOT a demonstration of failure
I know, I've played Hollow Knight
And Celeste
And a dozen roguelites
Sometimes dying is the fun part
On a side note
Death will be very common and it's an integral part of the experience, it's an important step in the Trial And Error procedure
Jumping down a gaping hole and finding myself back at the water pool gave me Deepnest flashbacks
Which you will be performing a million times as you solve each new puzzle the game introduces
Current theories are
-
This is some sort of experiment, likely something like simulating an ecosystem, but something went wrong and the now-mutated ecosystem broke out
-
The world is just like this for some reason, probably some mutation or climate stuff judging by the primordial rain
There are weird seemingly sapient guys running around throwing shit at me
And I found a room that seemed extremely cult-likr
super interesting theories
Make theories at your complete freedom as you go!
reading them is one of the highlights for helpers like me
Making theories was my favourite part of Silksong and all of them were wrong
All yours for rw will be wrong too. Or will they? Time will tell.
Metroidvanias aren't really necessarily nonlinear, though. The definition is more based off of an upgrade-based gameplay loop, which Rain World doesn't have.
I'd argue the key selling point of metroidvanias is backtracking and exploration
Seeing a door and going "I need to come back here later" is the same as it is in a Metroidvania even if the unlock conditions are different (exploration vs simple gameplay loop)
well yeah
But it's a skill-check or a knowledge-check rather than a progression lock like, say, Metroid or Ori.
It certainly feels like a metroidvania at times, and the map certainly resembles it, but I'd argue it's better described just as an open-world game.
That's why I said it's 60% of the way there
It's not a Metroidvania but I believe most Metroidvania players would enjoy it
My sister has completed both Hollow Knight and Silksong but says that Rain world was boring and dropped it before even leaving outskirts, maybe the fact that you aren't beating everything up and getting stronger by the second doesn't really appease some ppl
Rain World definitely embodies the more passive elements of metroidvanias
Like there's the whole combat and platforming stuff and then there's the "getting lost for two hours"
(I like getting lost for two hours)
Yeahhh don't worry, soon enough you won't be getting lost as much
though i admit that vibe exploring as a begginer was super fun
I for one love being lost
except that time i went into a middle game region as a begginer by accident and got stuck and had to reset oops X(
It's my favourite part
Good
monksilly
Pulled out the wiki for the first time
I got to the top of the Chimney Canopy, saw a nuclear explosion-level blast of blue light
And wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything
And what I learned was
-
I need to come back later
-
I need to get out of this area

Don't use the wiki
Information is your most powerful tool in this game.
What's wrong with it
So giving yourself extra more or less amounts to cheating.
I mean, yeah, play however you want
Rather that than have to backtrack 8 miles cuz I missed something
But the game is designed to be played blind.
I mean, Passages exist. That's what they're for
Besides, it's pretty hard for that to happen just because there's almost never only one way to do something.
what about survival platformer? that seems like a pretty decent label ive seen
and yeah wiki-ing rainworld is like looking up the ending of a movie you're watching.
kinda not meant to do that. even if you're the only one watching it.
Makes it kinda hard to be lost and confused in a vast and unknown world
Yes you will absolutely want to stay away from the rainworld wiki
It is best played blind and you deplete a significant part of the experience
I don't mind spoiling minor things that I wouldn't have figured out myself
Y'all are acting like I looked up a complete map or something
There's no way in hell I would've thought "I need to come back here later with enough karma"
In terms of, like, the amount of power it gives you, googling how creatures work is roughly equivalent to /give-ing yourself a diamond pick in Minecraft. It's pretty significant
thats completely fair, but do try to persevere for as long as possible
Again, didn't "google how a creature works"
I looked up what a dead end that flashbanged me was about
Oh we're not against that either but the game is riddled with big surprises that you'd be at constant risk of exposure to in an innocently unrelated article
Hence why this forum
I mean, you don't need to interact with that thing anyways. A good 70% of the game's content is obscure and missable mechanics like that one, the idea being that you'll naturally stumble across some of them on any given playthrough.
yeah free roaming RWers are horrible at hiding spsoilers
You ask, we tell. We give curated answers based on a player's needs and keep them safe from unnecessary additional info
i remember a video recently that kindly put massive watcher spoilers in their thumbnail. and spoils the entire ending in teh first 3 seconds of the video
like wow...... thanks i guess
Yeah, if you don't wanna play blind it's still better to ask here than to go to the wiki
With us you at least ensure you're not getting spoiled to anything other than the stuff you were asking about.
I'm fairly good at navigating
It's just like HK really
I know what I'm after so I just tune everything else out
Look up a map -> I know I'm at the top so I just look at the higher areas -> See text on my point -> Google what the text is -> Check out requirements -> Close
Didn't see a single thing that I didn't want to know
(we're cryptic by default, since, y'know, what we said, but if you want more direct answers ask for them directly)
Yeah we will give detailed answers without riddles if you expressly consent to them; otherwise we default to broader or vaguer hints that serve to gently nudge you in solving a problem yourself
Doesn't really work out for these sort of limited-time things tho
Especially without the ability to save and quit
Sometimes I just gotta know if I need to stay somewhere for longer or if I can throw myself off by now
(I threw myself off and died)
Kinda hoped I'd just go flying through like 7 rooms
Is anything in the game limited-time? You have unlimited cycles...
Yeah that would be really funny
Talking mostly about irl, I spent ages climbing up to that point
Honestly didn't even know what I was doing
I just knew that I wanted to go up
And so I went up whenever I was able to
That's a true and understandable concern; nevertheless, we are from every timezone corner of the globe and try our best to have a felper answer questions as quick as they are posted.
ah I see
That last gauntlet of rooms was kinda terrifying actually way too many turkeys (whom I now know are called vultures)
Somehow this chimney place is 800x worse than Black Mesa
Just so you know there's nothing in the game that states that, the creature names on the wiki are generally made-up or taken from the code or something. So feel free to invent your own terminology
0 space for error, there's a pit of death in every room, alligators (whom I now know are actually lizards) keep ambushing me and the weird monkey(?) cult(?) people won't leave me alone
Oh that explains it
Generally I feel like there are so many things I don't want to know
I picked up a worm and it started glowing red and I just fucked off
Still no clue what they do
And I hope that I don't have to find out
Hence why we advise against the wiki
It's a lifelike game
believe it or not, falling from a hundred meter height... leaves some marks maybe
i think crocodile/alligator is more accurate (i man look at em, clearly they bathe in sunlight and pretend to be logs!) but lizard is shorter and rolls easier of the tongue
croc:
Where is my cat side when I need it
Why am I all slug and no cat
And why are these white alligators so fucking fast god damn it's actually terrifying
Very few animals in the game have canon names, we encourage players being free and creative to use their own
Hit me with their tongue, I get locked in place for 20 seconds while praying I get out and then they chase me while twice as fast
I have a big list in this server somewhere with all of the funny names y'all come up with for everything. I haven't updated it in a while though
No clue where I'm going though I suppose I should maybe start listening to my guide but at the same time I kind of don't really care
Rain World is a horror game at times
Rain World is a horror game 24/7
I've died more times to random alligator ambushes than I have to actual enemies
s are my worst foe
I mean, there aren't really any actual enemies in this game beyond random predator ambushes
Also one of the cultists(?) entered my fucking shelter and I've never been more terrified in my life
It's like learning the Velociraptors can open doors
Many critters have individual colour and integument variation, they're only cosmetic and behave the same otherwise
I see
As is true in the real world.
Are all enemies in this game unlimited or are there some limited ones
Like is it possible to make the number drop by killing them
I assume the basic ones are but what about the more special ones (like the vultures)
Yes, but the resulting voids in the ecosystem will eventually be filled (so only temporarily)
All creatures can be killed.
Animals have set populations and spawns in a given region. When you kill one it'll eventually respawn after some cycles elapse. Or, something else will happen.
Is it just for the current cycle or does it carry over for a few ones

I see
It depends on every creature. Ditto for food items.
Hm
Well, be replaced.
Yeah the respawn would be a different individual id
Are things like Monk and Hunter actual characters or just different possibilities
And is there any content exclusive to those
Characters
Actual characters
Every slugcat has its own story, worldstate and goals
God damn so I just bought 3 games for the price of one?
Hell, for the price of half of one
Crazy
Also where's the More Slugcats expansion? Can't see it on the steam store
If you get the dlcs you'll have like 10 games
They all exist in the story, but they aren't necessarily alive at the same time as the Survivor.

Too broke for those for now
That's the Downpour dlc
Ah
MSC is the name of one of the mods implemented by the Downpour DLC.
Downpour dlc is a package bundle of 3 official mods
Multiplayer
Expedition Mode
and More Slugcats
1 campaign
Watcher is the next dlc, it adds one more slugcat. It is the biggest campaign by far though, hence getting to stand alone in a dlc
The Monk is really similar to the Survivor since it's a pseudo-easy-mode. But the Hunter is very much its own thing
I'm assuming Hunter then is "hard mode"? Or at least harder than Survivor
the flavour text does imply that
Hunter is harder than survivor, but it has a pretty different story and routing and some features unique to it so can't be said to imitate the survivor experience too much
The path of the Hunter is one of extreme peril
I started this game like half a year ago, played for an hour and then dropped it so I remember nothing about the start
I actually have zero clue how the game even started
Ah, that happens a lot
Is there any difference in movement and combat mechanics?
so basically you were living with your family (others of your kind) and then the Rain happened and you fell in a pit and got separated
Definitely.
And Hunter is not that?
Is it worth it to play these simultaneously or should I focus on Survivor
Not at all
You can't play hunter now if you wanted to
Cuz the idea of going two different routes at the same time kind of intrigues me
It's unlocked by beating either surv or monk
Focus on the Survivor. You can't play the Hunter now anyways, and the Monk, as I said, is mostly just pseudo-easy-mode and not really worth it if you can handle Survivor.
Monk is a good campaign if you ever want to do sidequests or fill gaps in your map awareness or such
Or find out monk's place in the lore, too
For sake of completionism
It turns out there were 2 passageways in that big climb that I didn't look at so I guess it's backtracking time
I just got skewered by a monkey
Okay I'm at the next door to what I assume is an even harder area but I'll need to eat first
THERE'S A SHELTER LORD TAKE 5 YEARS FROM MY LIFESPAN AND GRANT IT TO WHOMEVER DESIGNED THIS PLACE
Sky Islands is tuff
fun fact
the entire vanilla map was made by just one guy
(the core development team was only two people)
Okay so I fell off and I believe I'm locked out now
The lizard was eating my food but the turkey ate the lizard
Truly the circle of life
Using the food chain to your advantage
I somehow did a dash on the ground
And I have no clue how to replicate it
Cuz I was just kinda jumping around and then my guy slid forward
Oh shit I just got hit by a cutscene
There are ghosts behind me. Interesting
Heyyyy remember what I said about parkour tricks
Now you know it exists. Next step is to replicate it
Where are you now? Sky Islands?
Nope
Right in front of the door
Didn't find a shelter before dropping to my death
Feels like a good point to end it for today
Ah, yeah, that door is deceptively tricky
This game is starting to PMO in a bad way and I'm losing motivation but I'll persevere because it's interesting enough
I'm literally stuck in a place with 3 exits all of which need high karma
But I can't get high karma cuz there's 800 enemies per room
Current strat is to try backtracking into Industrial Complex and go someplace else
Watch the avgn ninja gaiden video
it'll help

it sure as hell helped me
I've been motivated by a friend who told me to fuck off from chimney canopy and go follow the guide
So I will do that and say goodbye to this platforming
That's absolutely fair
The Nerd tackles the infamous Ninja Gaiden for the NES. Widely considered one of the hardest games of the 8-bit era. Even a master ninja would have trouble, if given the chance. Well, a chance is given, as the Nerd seeks out the help of a sensei master. Q-tips will drop, thumbs will slice - it's AVGN: Ninja Gaiden!
This is Angry Videogame Nerd ...
Do you have Passage?
Nope

Shaded Citadel is not as bad as I thought it'd be
Just learn to be a scary scug and you win
The enemy may be terrifying, but you are even more
The centipedes disagree
cherry bombs agree
Kinda breezing through, though I did just barely make it to the first shelter of Looks To The Moon before the rain got me
Five Pebbles = Found ✅
When'd you find that?
Just now
Seems like they're stuck
Probably gonna have to climb further up cuz that seems to be the only way nearby
Why do you name em that?
Friend told me to go find Five Pebbles so I'm assuming this is Five Pebbles

Are they not Five Pebbles
Is this someone else
What do they look like?
Blue
And stuck to something
It turns out this is not Five Pebbles
It also turns out it's a good thing I only ate 3/5 glowing guys
You'll definitely know when you find five pebbles lol
I've been playing under the assumption the blue mf I've been seeing was Pebbles
Who tf is Moon bruh
That's why you don't allow in outside information
You'll only get confused and mix up events or instructions or info
The one you just met 😌
Getting mixed up over a name is not really all that confusing
While at the same time getting surprises spoilt
You'll have a fraction of the surprise and mystery if you know already you're hunting for an entity named five pebbles
Not really?
I still don't know who they are or why I'm following them
How do I unlobotomise Moon and is it even worth it ATP cuz that mf is 60% of the way to death
You made the decision
Just a hungry slugcat doing what it needed to fill its tummy
I regret my decision
After some consultations I've decided I'm probably gonna try to load a backup or something
It turns out all I lose are "lore drops" but I NEED to know what the hell is going on
(which I may not even have to do cuz I can't remember if I slept or not)
Don't
you can make ammends for your "mistakes" later if you want to
keep going
You can totally progress the game with no consequence
but it is your decision
Also, nothing is a "mistake". Maybe stuff can be not in the interest of the player, but ingame any choice is neutral
(do not spoil yourself on how to, figure it out)
You are only an animal trying to survive
This is what I consulted about

And it sounds like a hassle
Not really tbh
But i won't get into it
and neither should you
just feel free to ping me for any future occurrances so you don't have to spoil yourself
I already have
What I know is it's 3 locations or so away
And I presumably need to do it twice just to get back to 5 neurons
And I have to find it without the guide
Well uhh i guess, yeah
What else do you know?
Nothing really
I know I need to go back into Shaded
And find the place from there
Yeah that's good
I also know that's presumably where Five Pebbles is
Whom I still don't know much about
But I assume they're like Moon
Question is what does "like Moon" mean
Looks to the moon?
Moon the person whose neurons I ate
Is looks to the moon their full name
Yeahs
Cuz that has some interesting implications
Of course!
Considering the area itself is named Looks to the Moon
You will find out more about why that is soon enough
Well
Neurons floating around
Connected to a place named the same way
I'm gonna assume this is a GladOS situation
They were placed here and are basically a living being taking the function of an AI
Or something similar
Wow you really love your Half life universe games
So you believe that moon is a living person whose mind has also been transplanted into a AI system?
Not quite
Moon's body is still there
But they're connected to the facility and the facility is named after them
In any other context I'd assume this is a prison but they don't seem awfully imprisoned
The idea of neurons being disconnected from them is also interesting
And part of the reason why I believe this is some AI shenanigans

If the neurons are disconnected then presumably you may be able to remotely control them
Intriguing theories
(and anything they're inhabiting)
This is definitely a high-tech world, or at least used to be before something happened

The biggest reason I want Moon is to be able to make a sense of this shit
Cuz they're connected to lore drops somehow
I'm gonna assume if I collect enough neurons they start talking or something
I'm thinking about what else I know though
I still don't quite get if Moon is the same species as me
If they are that explains some stuff I think
Cuz Survivor is clearly shown to be at least somewhat smarter than the others
On account of being able to climb, pick up and throw stuff, etc.
The only others to do that are the monkey cultist shadow wizard money gang
And yeah if amending for your actions seems like a hassle from your research it's in your freedom to load a backup (if you even need to
). The game makes em automatically regularly and you wouldn't lose much progress. Just know that the game is often about long and frustrating journeys for a worthwhile goal, so don't use that as a pillow all the time
. it'd still be neater to do the thing legit.
I like your funny theories half life man, i think that if you went to shaded citadel and did whatever you have to do you might find yourself correct on some things
I'll think about it, quit playing for today anyway so I have some time
I like the idea of the game and its' difficulty
And I've played games with similar appeal before (Hollow Knight, arguably Celeste and some roguelites)
But fetch quests are the bane of my existence
So I guess the question is do I have to bring neurons 2 by 2 or can I take like eight million of them
Oh fuck am I gonna have to choose between Five Pebbles and Moon
Remember that nothing's mandatory
Morally it is
I need to repay the guide
I didn't listen to them and I wound up in the Tower of Hell
(Chimney Canopy)
Accurate name
And then I listened to them and wound up in actual paradise (Shoreline)
i love these names u give to regions
It's a habit I've picked up by forgetting names
Rain World has easy-to-remember names but now I've just gotten used to it
Current areas I've been to are uhh
Outskirts, Industrial Complex, Chimney Canopy, Shaded Citadel(? Can't remember the second word), Shoreline, Looks to the Moon
And I feel like there was something between complex and shaded

Outskirts was hell but only because I was a fraudulent bum who didn't know what he was doing
Industrial Complex was alright except for the eight hundred kilometer tall pipes that I had to climb every time I died
Chimney Canopy needs to be culled completely, I want that area wiped from the map
Pave over it and build a Walmart
Outskirts is hell for every new player
I don't even know what killed me the most cuz it was a team effort
300 hours later, l now return to it fondly like an old home
90% of the time it was me being ambushed by an alligator
One forgets how good they had it there
Absolutely real asf omg
Returning to Industrial Complex after Chimney Canopy was a heavenly experience
I need all those turkeys extinct
And the white and blue alligators too
Might sound crazy but i like chimnney cannopy tbh, it's so fun
When you memorize the map
I suck genuine ass at platforming because I'm used to high-movement games
Ori, HK, Celeste mainly
Arguably Terraria too
Having 0 mid-air correction is actual hell
They're useless alone but are annoying as hell
Like if I need to go somewhere and they just completely block the path for like 2 minutes
Very true
Same goes for alligators
Rain world has no mid air corrections? wow
to me movement just feels so natural and REAL
xD
didn't even realize air corrections were nonexistamt
I had a cycle where I went into Sky Islands and the ONLY path forward was blocked by an alligator that was spinning in circles due to pathfinding issues
me when slugcat doesn't have blue pink hair and can't dash three times
I love those guys so much
Slugcat needs to grow wings or shit
Even the devs say they don't know how to fix that, and they tried

:
Just equip the angel wings in the accesory slot duhhh
There's a mod for that
terraria in rain world?
The modding community gets me
There are terraria easter eggs in one of the dlc campaigns
Looks to the Moon has no right to have this layout ntw
Won't say which
It should not take me eight years of tunnel crawling just to get to Moon
Oh my gaytttttt i gotta find it
Learn to pipe boost later or something
How do people find this stuff out bruh
Is this like actual game mechanics the devs thought of
I found it through accident and learned how to hone it to go ZOOOOM
I've watched speedrunners leg it from tutorial to moon's room in one cycle. You have no idea.
Or is this a Celeste situation where "This is now a feature"
Oh wow this is awesome
experiment!!!
most movement stuff ive found has been by pure accident
Speedrunners are a different breed
They scare me
I've seen mfs go through Deepnest lanternless out of sheer sixth sense
Some are, some are not
I still gotta conquer the way to ?ploo though, sounds super hard and inhuman
Backflips? Intended. Literal fruit-powered levitation? ... maybe not.
Backflips are fun as hell
I don't think they have a use but I've aurafarmed with them on multiple occasions
?ploo
Aurafarm is an use
Is this just straight up floating what
Yes xD
Yep
there's weirder stuff
It's impossible without robotlike reflexes, it needs frame perfect rhythm
Oh no
Do y'all know how long it takes to drown
In remix settings you can enable a visual breath bar
There's signs the slugcat will show too when it's about to drown without the bar
I just wing it tbh, usually works just fine
Yup, it's all in the body language
you get enough body language
Some advice we do try give people though, never press Jump underwater
I assume it's like
It gives you a small boost in exchange for oxygen plummeting faster
Yeah
Yeah, good for a last second save to shoot up to the surface
Can the frogs kill me
Cuz they've jumped at me a few times and haven't been able to do anything so far
I assume they're just kind of ass at their job
Frogs?
In Shoreline
The underwater fast fish?
I'd say those look more tentacle-like
I just say fish since I haven't really thought about what they look like
and it's really fun seeing how everyone names creatures!
We like to keep record of all the fun names people develop for rainworld's critters
We might not be thinking of the same thing hold on
Nevermind this is definitely a fish
This is the first time I'm getting a good look at them
Question is why is the Overseer guiding me to Moon in the first place
Presumably for more neurons
Well not presumably
100% for more neurons
But I still don't get what exactly is up with Moon
They seem to be largely immobile and definitely defenseless
(judging as how I can literally eat their brain in front of them and they just cower and hide along with their guide)
So could LITM (the place) be keeping Moon (the person) alive?
All these mfs have fire names bruh
I've heard the name Seven Red Suns thrown around or something like that
And god fucking damn the sheer aura radiating from that
I'm 100% buying Downpour eventually
From the research I've done
Presumably in spring sale if I've finished Survivor and Hunter by then
Buy Watcher
Well if you're sure that's the intention in mind then yeah, but feel free to keep theorizing!
Buy Watcher
x2
after buying downpour tho
tell us when you got downpour
Maybe during the summer
Gonna be a while til then lol
We can wait
Yeah it's a veteran's campaign

You have a long way to go in experience
I'm trying to think if there's any lore I might've forgotten from the start
Cuz I remember nothing from my first hour
You got washed away
Hey so are Five Pebbles and co slugcats
They look similar but seem somewhat different
Find out
I know Five Pebbles also has neurons
(from a misunderstanding)
(I said "Did I fuck up by eating the neurons near Five Pebbles" and it took two minutes of talking to realise that's not Five Pebbles)
Hm

At some point I want to probably Passage back into outskirts or something to explore in another direction
Just in case there's any optional stuff I've missed that might give more lore
I know I've completely missed some garbage area
Not like an ass area
Literal garbage
It turns out my route is completely fucked because I tend to wander off after I see something
I don't know if I have ADHD or childlike wonder
I'm going completely off the assumption this really is a post-apocalypse world
And I still haven't been able to answer what exactly happened
Them ancients really screwed up everything, but you thrive on their ashes :D
Go forth and find out the truth about it all
trooper
Who tf is "you" I'm being clowned on here
I'm doing everything but thriving man this world is kicking my ass
My Slugcat's legs are shattered by this point with how many times I've leapt off to my death
I need to get used to low-movement at some point
Is the game controlling you or are you controlling the game?
The game gives me possibilities to choose between
So it's kind of both
well this is defenitely looking to be one of the strangest RW runs ive seen yet
There are worse, wanna see it for yourself?
That doesn't really qualify as "messing up the route", that's the normal way to find new things in this game don't worry
I don't think it's messed up, just fucked
I can already tell speedrunning will be fun eventually
In the end I chose to load a backup, I have now met Moon and not lobotomised her
Next goal is Five Pebbles I guess, I'm choosing not to use passage cuz I wanna see more of Shoreline
I drowned 6 minutes through travelling so now I'm Passaging
THE SURVIVOR
Back to shaded it is
Bum budabun bumbumbumbum
Bum budabun bumbumbumbum
Bum budabun bumbumbumbum
I'm trying to think of a funny name but I can't remember the SMG2 galaxy where platforms only exist if they're lit up
Oh well
The shadow wizard money gang is also here and my guide now has a blue friend
How are you getting through withoud a glow?
Intuition
smort
My guide thinks he real funny leading me into a room with FIVE ALLIGATORS
A tale in two parts
You struck gold
But it's heavily defended
It really isn't I impaled it and just walked past
GGS mate
guide wants me to go down
I want to explore more so I go right
Screen switches over, there's a giant red plant 2 centimeters away from me
I never learn
Thankfully I reacted in time
Mostly cuz these guys are kinda frauds
The plants killed me
They are the good kind of conmen
Okay so I have no idea how to get past these things cuz I simply do not have the ammo
Guess I'm gonna have to take a detour to get some rocks
My detour failed and I died again
Two rocks or one spear do just fine
I missed the spear and I have died again
Now it's up to you to use these tactics to achieve maximum victory
Yes but there's two of them
In a row
With seemingly no ammo in between
There's a trick you can do that solves your problem
it's quite easy actually
is it picking up my ammo after I've thrown it
You can get through 20 of these plants in a row with only one single spear just fine
It's fine!
You can mess up in even worse ways
but in rain world you can't really "mess up"
just, become smarter
Okay I've gathered enough to get through despite my misses
The passageway is glowing so I'm gonna assume this is the way out
Turns out I'm broke and have no food
So I went to go get food and got eaten by presumably the goose from Untitled Goose Game
good luck!
i reckon even 0 spears are enough, given how theyre placed
Eh i can't reliably get through them with no items
skill issue yeah same
Memory Crypts was terrifying
The Terminator Geese kept standing still and blocking my way so I eventually just started balling it and ran past them
Made it to The Exterior

Have you died to the death pit next to the first shelter?
I have not
I skipped the first shelter cuz I was broke and foodless
Anyway
On one hand this area not being called Five Pebbles confuses me
On the other, Exterior implies there's an Interior
an impressive accomplishment
Wait
Are we talking about the pit in Exterior
If so yes I immediately jumped down into it
Ah OK
some day
in the future
it'll fill up completely with dead slugcats
and we'll just be able to walk across it
Amen
I HAVE A GRAPPLING HOOK???
HOLY SHIT HALF LIFE OPPOSING FORCE REFERENCE ADRIAN SHEPPARD?

I've been promptly eaten by an alligator I couldn't avoid
Because I chose to keep climbing instead of going right
Eh it's fine, atleast you are able to recognize what caused this to happen
My recklessness and stubbornness
Which I don't intend to change WE BALL WE BALL WE BALL
I NEED to go higher
Okay so I fell off
SO HIGGGHH
0 views in 1 second?
Worse, 1 fall in 20 seconds
I LOVE WHEN AN ALLIGATOR GRABS ME FROM OFF SCREEN AND PULLS ME INTO ITS' MOUTH IMMEDIATELY
Wait why the fuck is this place called The Leg
IS THIS A MECHA
I made it into the room I wanted to go to and genuinely what in the world
I found Blue Wither Storm
And I have fallen off once again
Blue wither storm? :O
The jumps in this area get easier with time don't worry
Giant flying thing made up of black balls with blue eyes(?)
And tentacles
There is an alligator afk farming directly in front of my shelter ????
Can I outspeed this thing
Technically I can sleep but then I start at 0 food
Fuck it we ball I've eaten a flower
It didn't react at all
Okay so I've continued going and this bum ass wither storm is camping my way forward what do I even do
Just wait or try to bait the wither out or something
CREATUREEE, RETREATTTTT
It's just a pathetic lizor!
I was just milliseconds away from being shocked to death
By a centipede?
By the rain
I am max karma zero food if I die here I ragequit until tomorr
I've made it through
Just gotta get to the next shelter now
FIVE PEBBLES = REACHED ✅
NEXT SHELTER = SLEPT IN ✅
GRAPPLING HOOK = STILL IN MY HAND ✅
I seem to be floating.
I seem to be adcending
Ascending*
Going left is a terrible idea because I have no clue what is there and I seem to have no way to stop myself but WE BALL WE BALL WE BALL
NEURON SPOTTED
THERE ARE WITHER STORMS IN FIVE PEBBLES???
That's enough for today
Woops
But yeah you are going the right way
and enjoy the asmr everytime you die to a wither storm!
YEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Do I have to go through Five Pebbles (normal) or Five Pebbles (fucked up)
What's the difference
Yeah wym?
One is just called Five Pebbles and the other is called something like Five Pebbles (Unfortunate Disaster) or something like that
I believe it's a subsection
And there were presumably earthquakes or something
Well probably just malfunctions
Theory time
Moon and Five Pebbles are manning these things like power rangers
With all the neurons controlling different parts
Oh yeah you gotta go through five pebbles, which leads you into unfortunate development
Except Moon's mecha(? I don't think they're actually mechas but idk what to call them) broke down and presumably sunk underwater
Fuuuck
That area looks fucked up bruh
oh you cooking here mate
This theory is super fun tbh
It builds character, and makes you much stronger by the end of it
The only thing I've yet to figure out is the origin and nature of those other two things
you can do it
I'm not sure if Moon and Five Pebbles are slugcats or not
And I'm not sure if they were made (genetically engineered) or kidnapped
If my other theories are correct I'm gonna assume they're kidnapped
The savior of them both
Unfortunate Development is optional
If it is too frustrating for you
There are forks in the road earlier. They'll get you where you need.
Before or in five pebbles?

In
Excellent
Eh but like i said, unfortunate development builds character
Next time just say it'll make me want to pull my hair out
Me: I'm going to click "up" because I want to go up
Rain World: 0.2 miles per hour to the left, got it
Very little of zero-gravity movement involves pressing the direction you actually want to go
ah you've reached the part where freedom becomes a complete lie!!
I mean not really
Me when I make an enemy that you cannot wrestle away from but also takes 30 seconds to kill you
as we said before, the unfortunate part is optional
Literally is there any way to break out when this wall cancer touches me
What the fuck is the point of it grappling me and then holding me still for 10 seconds before finally deciding to eat me
unless you're stubborn
Rain World made Shorelines to prove they can make fun level design, they just don't actually want to
Like Adam Sandler making uncut gems
funny thing is there are plenty of new players that hate Shoreline
ironically the main water area feels like a breath of fresh air
They're wrong I'm afraid
(mostly because it's a maze and they don't know how to swim)
I can shove a spear into its' mouth when it has 1 small tentacle attached to me from 5 miles away
And it'll still do nothing
Made it through to Recursion but I haven't found a shelter yet
I have fallen off and am now doomed to pass through this tunnel at incredibly small speeds
Yeah I managed to reach one of the walls (? Technically floor and roof) and boost myself off
Unfort didn't have anything in my hand at the time
AND RIGHT AFTER THEY MAKE A STAGE HAZARD THAT AUTOKILLS YOU AND ONLY TRIGGERS ON CONTACT???
I WAS LITERALLY RIGHT LOOOOOL
Why couldn't the wall disease be like this
I was thinking this game was kinda mid, but when i realized the game accurately depicts the feeling of slowly getting broken down into nutrients by the wither, i realized i had something real in my han- paws
I've gone full circle and ended up back into regular Five Pebbles
So I'm gonna assume I need to go through the communist blocks right after Unfortunate Development
I forgot what they're called
Something about memories maybe
Oh noo
Wiat no need to
there's a path you can take inside that side of five pebbles that lets you skip the difficult unfortunate development sections
I know, recursion
That's where I went through
And ended up back at the start
I assume this is just two alternate paths
Somewhere near the start
They took a big loop
Yes you can just backtrack through recursion to the blocks area

Yeah recursive is good
i played the game in portuguese didn't kmow subregion names well
Lol yeah
Five Pebbles = Found ✅
They're talking to me in various letters can we switch to something I understand please
Oh this is a PowerPoint presentation
OH WE TALKING
Five Pebbles murdered me cuz I pissed them off
Stabbed them or dilly dallied?
The latter
Nope
I left and entered a few times and then died and just walked back all the way
Currently in I think Memory Crypts or Shaded Citadel
Bringing a neuron to Moon and then I'm gonna try to figure out where Farm Arrays are
- They said it's "past" Farm Arrays
- There's a door I need the Mark to open (according to Five Pebbles)
So I'm gonna assume it's like an early game area that's blocked off
(Metroidvania vibes)
So probably gonna backtrack all the way to Outskirts cuz I wanted to explore that more anyway and I think it's the furthest west I've gone
Considering I specifically need to descend I don't think they're talking about Sky Islands nor anything connected to it
Anyway I read a bit about the Downpour campaigns and I think I'm gonna eventually buy it, probably spring sale
||Rivulet seems hype with the new rain mechanics||
||Didn't read anything story-wise, at least nothing important||
||I believe one is a "prequel" and one a "sequel" and that's basically all I know||
||And I also heard the name Seven Red Suns dropped which is a sick as fuck name high aura behaviour||
Keep in mind not to detail about any downpour exclusive content in a vanilla thread
Oh true
Do I spoiler or delete
What're the rules
Wowlol, next time you go to five pebbles as another scug try to exit thru it! (and not piss him off xD)
it's alot faster!
Yeah he did say it was a direct exit but I really wanted to fuck around and find out
Besides I did need to pick up a neuron
(I picked up two but dropped the other one by accident and cba to throw the cycle)
I don't think you'll get trouble for any of the above, it's vague enough. Seven red suns also isn't exclusively downpour and hence you get away with that on technicality
I'll just spoiler it then just in case
My tendency to type 9 separate messages has finally come to bite me in the ass as I change each one individually
Btw i reccomend you start exploring a bit once you get to moon instead of trying to directly course a plot, you might find some cool stuff or a shortcut to your destination!
Low-key I kinda wanna beat the game and then do extra content on Hunter
Is there anything M/S exclusive I can miss?
Negative negative
Deletion/not posting any specific dp or watcher information, regardless of if a player or helper
Doing first playthrough of surv on vanilla is recommended
It is the clean concise original experience
No I mean I wanna beat the game normally on Survivor and then explore the rest of the areas as Hunter
And besides if you have downpour on you might not be able to properly discuss your playthrough if you like accidentally do downpour content
Like as Survivor just follow the plot and then fuck around as Hunter
Ah
Maybe try to climb chimneys again
Well hunter has its own plot so you'll be doing that too
Might hit a friend up for a multiplayer playthrough for one of the downpour slugs
Though that's for another time
Every slugcat is its own story with its own place in the world
Your friend is already cracked at the game?
My friend said it's their favourite game lol
Well I say friend but
It's a person I know online so idk if that's the right word
Multiplayer is quite fun, a lot of the campaigns are more impactful playing alone and without risk of spoilage fron a companion though
Yeah tell your friend to ONLY attempt to follow you, and to not try to chart a path ahead
and to avoid talking about the lore
or if you see something new, that he should let you find out what it is
I see
Any suggestions on which slug is most fun with another player?
Like do any of them have multiplayer interactions
Eh that's pretty subjective, are you going for how much it'd fit in the lore and gameplay loop or sheer fun value?
Gameplay and fun
The game assumes player 1 is alone if that's what you're asking, so player two will not show up in cutscenes or whatever
Meant more like gameplay stuff
Like ||Rivulet|| would be shitty to play with probably
Wait
Can you pick differing Slugcats or is it the same one
Yeah you can pick differing
Yeah then it'd just be hell to play with unless they pick the same one
I've seen uh
||Artificer|| having some crazy shit
||Artificer|| with Artificer's arsenal mod on is pure gamerfuel and some of the biggest fun i have ever had in gaming
Tho it might be a good idea for you to play as Gourmand first, because you might be disappointed at playing someone so slow after playing someone very nimble like arti or rivulet
but you can play in any order that suits ya
Noted
I'm glad there's more fast-paced stuff
Survivor is definitely amazing and I'm having fun but every time I'm met with an enemy I kinda wish I had other options than pick a god and pray
Eh In the grander scheme of things you're still a newbie (haven't yet beaten surv) so it's fine that combat is such a cointoss for you, in the future it'll become alot more manageable
Agreed!
You can always kill said enemy

Combat is very intimidating at first, by design
With practice and experience you'll get a better hold of it
Almost everything in the game bleeds.
Believe it or not there's a mod for that
Seeeendddddddddddd
Not fast enough it seems
Tbh I think my last few deaths have been me jumping down 3 rooms of the Leg straight and landing directly into a wither storm or alligator
I still call them wither storms cuz I have no clue what their names are and even if I did it'd just feel wrong
the creature thing™
If l would choose l think gourmand is a good scug to play as multiplayer
Won't give the reasons of course but it'd lend itself well
And it is a very fun campaign despite people's aversions to his mechanics
Both gormands or OP is the only one?
Just gotta cooperate with them
Both surely
Lmao that's hilarious
His friend could also be monk, so that OP can get more food and do most of the cool stuff
Campaigns are designed specifically with their specific scug to traverse
Ideally only OP can make progress, if his friend dies OP should keep going, if OP dies then his friend should die too
Perchance
@candid briar When you get downpour ask your friend if for the gourmand campaign they wanna be a second gourmand or a monk (monk weak physically but eats less)
Bet
If you could kill predators easily, they wouldn't be very good predators, now would they?
The eating amount makes no difference, they will share the same foodbar
Oh really? Wow disn't know that xD
that is assuming they use jolly co op or meadow?
Yes there's no other multiplayers than those
Made it back to Moon but I seem to have lost
The neuron I stored
Well that'll be a job for Hunter
Off to the farm arrays
Also watcher adds HOW MANY new areas???
To say would be a spoiler
Nah I was researching the new things added
Adds a number of regions between 0 and the integer limit
But not one more, else the game would have a negative amount of regions
its probably best not to
even that can be a spoiler
For how long have you had that about me? xD
not as long as youd think
Got some emesis blue flashbacks with that message but eyyy thanks for promoting rain world watcher dlc
Eh
Idm being spoiled a bit if it means I can get a better idea of if I want to buy it or not
Hello early game area
I believe I've made it to garbage wastes after hearing it mentioned 80 times
What in the flying fuck is a Scavenger Toll
Well
After hearing something from Moon and now this I can safely say the shadow wizard money gang is called Scavengers
Woooo nice job figuring out!
It's a tool, nuff said
THERE SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN A MISUNDERSTANDING
