Any tips to improve my combat strategies?

LIZARDS: Right now I stab them in the back with a spear then stun with a rock so I can run up and retrieve the 2 items. I rinse and repeat until the lizard is weak and slow, then I run up and repeatedly stab it from behind at point blank until I'm sure it's dead.

VULTURES: I hide in a tunnel/ tight space and bait them to stick their head and neck inside so I can spear it. however it is usually too aggressive/ mobile to run up to and retrieve my spear; even if I try stunning it with a rock.

Have you tried fighting the vultures in the open?

Ive tried but they swoop down and snatch me.

I actually managed to kill one using the tunnel method

its eerily quiet and I've seen no lizards/ vultures for a couple rooms, should i be worried?
