Ok, so every region has an internal acronym. And every room starts with this acronym.
When you wrong den, the game saves the room you are in to wakeup next time.
When the cycle starts the game looks at the acronym at the start of the room name, to decide which region to load.

Gates are a bit special. They are instead named XX_YY_GATE
where XX and YY are the regions they connect, but the order of the acronyms doesn't matter.

So sometimes, you can from region YY wrongden in the gate to load region XX instead.

And in some campaigns, the region XX is replaced with a different region, but the acronym at the start of the gate stays the same, so, even though you can't normally enter XX because it is replaced, you can use a gate wrongden to load it, also known as timetravel.

In spearmaster, ||shoreline is replaced with waterfront||, but the gate starts with shorelines acronym (SL).
For riv, The Rot (RM) replaces Five Pebbles (SS).

what if the boxes the paintings are on have some programming that allows an Iterator sentience, the 5 things that tie a living being to life, what makes an iterator "alive" in a sense....and not some kind of code that just repeats prewritten answers?
Isn;t that what all life is in a sense though? A complex jumble of code that we learn to interpret to survive..
Maybe the painting-boxes are meant to bring a sentience that could match an iterator to their creators, a simularity....or perhaps those boxes are like physical taboos.
Like...an Iterator cannot ascend normally no? They stuck...perhaps the 5 things are coded into an iterator, not in a meaningful way that makes you able to invite your local iterator over for dinner....but like enough for it to understand what it's like? To have an understanding? To help it solve "the great problem"?

Hunter spoilers: ||What if NSH gave Hunter the rot intentionally? It could have been his intention to have Hunter die within the facility and have Pebbles witness it. A way to mock him?||
Spearmaster spoilers: ||"I hope eventually when you are out of this state of mind you will look back at these. Look back and reflect on all the regrets you've set yourself up to have." -NSH||
Hunter spoilers: ||It could be some kind of fucked up way to send a message to pebbles without him having to accept a broadcast/pearl directly.||

Building on the above:
If NSH is the creator of Rivulet, I wonder if he gave Rivulet instructions to not only help Moon but also to bring Pebbles down faster (can be in a sense of mercy or revenge).
Rivulet might not have been smart enough to retain this information, but the pearl that likely contains blueprints to the structure of Five Pebbles with the energy rail highlighted might be some indication of this.
I doubt Moon would act on this plan if she knew what NSH intended, so perhaps the pearl was intended for Pebbles? The aquatic nature of Riv does lean to Moon though.

But, like I said, the entire theory as a whole is a bit fucked up but there might be some elements of truth to it.

Information regarding outside iterators and their present motives/condition is very hard to come by, so best we can do is create theories and guess.

The biggest thing against this theory is that we don't really know how NSH and Pebbles interacted with each other before the fuck-up. NSH, from what I remember, has never quite been outwardly violent/destructive.
