Im pretty new to rianworld as well but i have played a bit with artificer which is a slugcat from downpour and from what i have seen so far is that there are a few changes to all aspects of the game with each other slugcat you play. so artificer for example may have an entire new map region that only he can access and would ever be able to find.
Though on the other hand, if you didnt like the game in general and only like exploring, it may not be entirely for you as there are also a lot of new mechanics that you are given.

but generally speaking, the whole game changes in little bits in all perspectives.

If you think monk is unnecessary difficult, the rest of the game might not be for you.

also yes, it doesnt get any easier.

If you want the feeling of exploring something new, you can check mods. There are a lot of cool region mods with entirely new areas to explore, though most are likely to be more difficult.

but on that note, there are also a lot of mods that make the game easier overall

But the difficulty is a big part of the game, and learning how to not die is what the game is about.

Downpour

The Downpour DLC is composed of 3 mods, More Slugcats Expansion (MSC), Jolly Coop, and Expedition. These can be individually enabled in the Remix menu.
With MSC enabled you must move to Downpour channels! It adds additional content to all of the campaigns.
Jolly Coop adds local coop, where everyone must play on the same device. Note that Steam Remote Play allows you to play Jolly Coop with anyone who has Steam, they don't need to own the game.
Expedition adds a new task based game mode.

I just finished my Monk run - I used some mods to help like the breathing meter and reusable sticks. I liked the game but I think it was pretty poorly designed and even on Monk unnecessarily difficult.

I'm wondering if I should try Downpour - do all of the Downpour campaigns involve retreading old areas? What % of it is old areas? What % of the campaigns are new areas?

Basically I don't really want to spend any time playing a new campaign in scenery I've already seen, since the exploring fresh areas was probably my favorite part of the game.

Downpour has a few new areas, but most of it is exploring the same regions with minor changes. If you don’t want to walk through them again, I wouldn’t suggest it. That being said though, if you like exploring new areas, you might like the Watcher DLC more, as that’s kinda its main thing. Just be warned it’s difficult

all the campaigns rely on you having knowledge from the original ones you play, so if you just didn’t enjoy the game it’s probably not worth it to get the dlcs

the game is only really as hard as you make it, your learned knowledge on how to handle things is what makes it easier over time
