#Bouncing ideas off skilled players and asking for tips
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
So to mention, I have had minor help and input from a pretty skilled player of the game, rarely commenting and mainly watching me play
To give an idea of my experience, I'll document a bit
Starting out as survivor, I spawned in outskirts, and struggled as I tried to figure out some of the mechanics and concepts. I found a karma gate below in a sewer, a scavenger pack farr off to the top left, and an exit to the top right. After attempting many times to pass the scavengers and dying, I decided to go to the top right path, taking me to the industrial complex, where the game seemed to go from fairly relaxed.. to what I thought was intense with up to 3!! lizards in an area. The small yellow man kept looking and pointing, with me being clueless to his meaning, just kind of generally moving in the direction he was in, which eventually led to to chimney canopies. I got relativly far in, bashing my head into a wall and fleeing from lizards until I got near the top of the canopies, where I showed my expert friend, and he strongly urged me to reset if I wanted the more standard experience for the game.
Deciding to take half of his advice, leaving the other half behind, I backtracked through the canopies and reentered industrial, where he gave me vague directions on how to get to the more standard area in terms of progress, and after a bit of travel I found myself in garbage wastes. Nothing much was too scare, I'm guessing because of the route I took, which was honestly pretty in and out, but I still had a few deaths to vultures and the worms before making it to shoreline.
Shoreline oh shoreline. The entrance music captivated and bewildered me.. for about 30 seconds before it stopped playing due to me resting. I explored the area almost fully, aside from a few underwater areas, and really enjoyed the jetfish mechanics, even if I got chomped in half by a leviathan in the very first big water room. from shoreline, I found speaks to the moon, and after a bit of confusion of why I was even there in the first place, I went back out and down to submerged superstructure, where I ended up exploring a good portion of the place with a mixture of bubble weeds and jet fish. I ended up making it to what I assume is the end of the structure, and found a cape my friend congratulated me on, before telling me that I could keep it or return it to the moon, and that what I had done was incredibly difficult and considered a challenge run by the community. After backtracking through the structure, I gave the cape to the moon woman by throwing it at her, and was told if I left and came back on the next cycle she would wear it... which did not happen, the cape was just gone?
@gilded pebble if you're curious
I had a few doors I could go through, and really couldn't be asked to figure out which one was the proper one, so my friend gave me a general cardinal direction, and sticking with that I got to shaded citadel. Once again, beautiful music, awe inspiring atmosphere crossing that huge bridge, only for my music to stop after 30 seconds cause I fell in a pit. I just kind of happened to stumble on the correct direction I guess, because after 1 spider room and no deaths bar the pit, I was traveling across an area I believe is named the memory pits, with scissor mouth birds that chase you down. getting to the next area, the leg, I grabbed a silk worm and flew through the area with it, doing the underhang in a bit more time as I struggled dealing with some of the octopi, passing through I got to the wall, and found it to be a very relaxed area, bar a single section with a bunch of yellow lizards living in a ball... that one section killed me maybe 30 times? but afterwards, I kept on heading up until I found a strange creature named 6 gravel, who changed my karma and killed me. upon my return he was gone, and before heading through the gate I was able to use my worm plus a spear to crawl into the other pipe, leading to a massive view of a distant city, which gave me goose bumps and was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in a game.
Following along, I met a robot who let me speak with it.. and actually had a cape! who told me to go west past the farm, and sent me on my way. going back down was a bit tricky, as the top half was covered in chameleon lizards, and the bottom half of the wall was raining, gradually increasing in intensity as I went down. I found a shelter and an exit which I was told lead towards the farm, only I'd thought that said exit required more karma than it did, and I passaged to max my karma for it.....
I then went into a cycle of spawn, enter chimney, die, repeat, opening the transition door maybe 30 times before finally getting through with enough food to rest on the opposite side by the sky islands, only the issue was is the sky islands needs karma and I couldn't find shelters there either, so the cycle then evolved once more into spawn in chimney canopies, eat food, rest, enter sky islands, die, repeat
I'm guessing I kind of beelined through sky islands though, as I really didn't see much of it, and found myself in the farm arrays, where I basically hopped onto a deer and rode through the whole area in 2 cycles.
As per where I'm at right now.. After just entering subterranian, I encountered another one of those creatures that kills you and gives you karma, only this one spoke (sadly I have bad memory and don't recall what he said) and tried going down the right path 8 times, dying continually
after failing, thanks to my karma flower preserving some of my karma, I tried the left path, and after a few deaths, I got into a shelter, and had to stop watching the stupid door transition even more haha
I went right through the train carts, down a ledge and into a big room, down a few more times, and I'm now in a small shelter with a scavenger merchant to my top left, and I'm assuming my way forward to the right of that
I do remember from pebbles I need to go down
I guess to ask to start with, do you think there is anything important or interesting I missed that I could passage back to and explore before going forward? Is my route very typical, submerged aside?
I would also just be happy to hear what you think of my journey haha
Ok well you don’t need to follow any directions for a “standard experience” you can go wherever you want
I don't think I need like a "Where do I go" kind of help as much as ask for advice on things like gameplay mechanics, cool places to explore, etc
But I'm also not even too worried about that, I'm just happy to talk about what I've done and hear how pros think about it
I know that backflips and slides are supposed to be strong, sadly I haven't used those.. like at all
I win most combats with stealth and running
you could explore, or you could follow five pebbles advice, it's up to you, is there something really interesting to do? depends on what you find interesting, you could visit moon again, or look for more of those karma creatures, but whether it's worth it depends on you
I did hear from someone else that my way of getting to 5 pebbles was very not normal for a new player haha
Ok wow you did a lot
again there's no right or wrong way
Of course :3
I did it that way :P
But yes there’s another way
This is actually technically my second run
you could also grind some more passages if that's what you want
In my first one I accidentally speared the little yellow man in the first few rooms, and felt so bad I reset my run 10 minutes in lmao
I also wanted to ask, what are ways to mitigate the karma system aside from not dying or karma flowers, I find it to be incredibly punishing, and can gate off lots of areas that don't have shelters on the opposite side
(Arguably spoilers? Idk) ||nothing you can do will like lock you out of your save file, so you can always go back and explore more if you want||
and farming the previous area for food and wasting cycels seems so brain numbing :/
even the ending?
Yeah.
Oh cool
I heard there are -----, so I would really like to go back to sky islands and find them
Well in other campaigns the endings are sometimes permanent I think. But for survivor you can always continue from where you last sheltered
That's great to know, ty!
||monk||
I guess the standard rainworld experience is just dealing it it then?
sorry I should've spoilered it
learn to survive instead of speedrunning the game
then you won't die as much
while in the middle of an area itself, it's mostly irrelevant, unless you want to visit another area and have to grind karma, but sitting on the edge of two zones with little karma is rough
going out for food pulls you further away from where you want to go in the first place
I'm speedrunning it? ;-;
idk
I haven't seen your playthrough
I don't know how many hours it took you
steam says I have 38.8 hours, idk if that includes my deaths or how that works
like 20:52 time just from successful cycles
... well, to me that's quite little but I generally take longer to complete games
I mean it's tricky too, because I happened on the right route through shaded citadel
but if you're dying so much that it feels like a slog to get through a gate, then you might've wanted to get a little better at surviving first
and after that it was just "go up"
then the man told me "go west"
and both routes were very direct I felt like
or go a different way, you died a lot in the chimney canopy to sky islands bit, so you could've instead explored and gone a different way
I would love to hear some good ways to do that, I'm very poor at combat
combat isn't the only way
evasion or stealth work too
||or making friends||
Evasion hardly works for me 🙁
I always just get snatched
I could always passage back to outskirts and explore and try different routes to take me back to subterranian
that would give me good ways to learn
if I get stuck I have another passage back
but I feel like I've been to most areas, mainly not exploring citadel, wastes, islands and farm array to the fullest
welp it's up to you, like cube said before, you can always come back
after finding the ending
I actually wanted to ask about that
I know there are other slugs you can play as, and I own watcher as well
I really wanted to try a different experience that would aide more in seeing areas that went untouched, and help me to better learn some things I'd forgone
would you have any good recomendations?
you mean would I have any reccomendations for your next slugcat to play?
yup :3
I would recommend either hunter or gourmand
even if you fail at hunter don't worry, just play gourmand afterwards
the other campaigns are best suited for being played after survivor (actually they don’t unlock until after survivor)
@hard moon this is the thread
i was already here lurking
You should definitely play all the scugs eventually
They're not just the same content but with different scug, they have independent storylines and exclusive regions/content to their respective campaigns
Will do!
When you get the time, I;d be happy to hear what you think
@tranquil pagoda In there :p
Since my last message of getting to subterranian I've not played
i see
saving it for a special time when I'm feeling very happy
to remind myself of the suffering tht is life
if you have confidence, you can try to do hunter
otherwise gourmand is the way
of course, just like others said in this post x)
not much of a choice here, however, as a recommendation, play washer only after youve completed all scugs
you can always play survivor/monk again and focus on exploration more
I would play both Hunter and gourmand for a couple cycles to see how each one feels then decide
