There's nearer shelter to be found. Be observant on your surroundings. And plenty food too yes

yep as everyone else said there is a shelter near the gate and there are many food locations that will respawn so you can reach the symbol

Honestly, they aren't the worst, they're really cool enemies for this area. Take your time when you encounter them, you won't be able to do much against them if you rush

There are very little shelters in sky islands and its pretty compact. It should be pretty simple to find one just don't go too high up.
