I've tried every possible jump from every angle and they all come short of reaching anything useful. Even a charge jump from the top left doesn't reach the little box, which is what I was hoping for.

The alternative, down the middle drop, goes to a huge pool of water in which I always drown well before reaching any new exits :(

I can't pass through the gate to subteranean any more because my karma is too low, so I have to backtrack into the drainage system. But from this room, I can't figure out how to make it across. If I go down the central section I end in a massive water-filled tunnel and always drown. Where do I go?

There isn't much you can do in this area other than swimming through those flooded tunnels. If the region is too hard for you, you can always find another gate
