||the children follow the pointed tail can be interpreted like this:
dess, noelle, kris, and asriel go into the forest, with asgore watching them. however, they see something in the woods, and they chase after it. except asgore doesn't see it and chases after the kids. we could assume that whatever the tail is a part of took dess, and since asgore was supposed to be watching the kids, that's why he was disgraced and fired from the police force.

however it can potentially go deeper. in chapter 4 we also see a hidden part of the prophecy: "They'll see the tail of hell take crawl", which is the only other mention of a tail that isn't comedic (like susie's tail). we can assume these are the same tail.

we also assume the tail in both mentions are image_friend's tail. this is because the image of the tail in the prophecy is made of a bunch of circles, and cats (which friend has been depicted as ingame) are said to be made of circles in this game via cat petterz.

the only things that muddy this up are as follows: 1. cat petterz is a game within deltarune, not an actual canon in that world. 2. it talks about a "pointed" tail, and the prophecy image of the tail does not have a point... however, that technically doesn't mean it doesn't have a point whatsoever, just that it isn't visible here.

if we assume all of these conclusions are reasonable, we can finally conclude this: image_friend took dess while asgore was meant to be babysitting her and the other kids, and that's why he was fired and why toriel left him (maybe).
