there should be tutorial text in this area, did you miss them? maybe the game has a weird aspect ratio for you so its off-screen, i've had that in some other games

(it should appear in a bar that covers the bottom ~10 pixels of the screen)

there was instructions that appeared in the middle of the screen, showing what buttons i had to hit

in other areas tho

if you dont see that hint at the bottom of the screen something might be off

alternatively you just happened to miss it

it does only last like 3-ish seconds per hint
