They are lowkey adorable: their body language as they investigate the scug, how they carefully attach the string to us. But then again, they are INCREDIBLY BIG. Wouldn't want to accidently kill the creature you're supposed to ascend ;-;
I'm not really sure of this creature, mostly just mysterious.

THEORY TWO

When you ascend the void serpent's hold of you and immense speed separates your spirit from your mortal body. I believe this for this reason: in the cutscene we are shown ascended hunter and hunter's body. Ascended hunter has no legs, the cutscene section that was shown after hunter's ascended form had legs, so I can only assume his body was left behind.
If the scene here is still technically in the non-ascended realm it can be seen as whatever sickness hunter had leaving him (and throwing the afterlife tree theory out the window).
