Help! [spoilers]?

Try to keep spoilers to a minimum!

So I just got to the deapths and entered the weird temple. The only "permenant" thing I did that I feel is worth mentioning is eating one of those white jelly fish that make me glow in the dark that gave me the "enlightened but at what cost" achievement.

I reached the black thing and couldn't beat it, didn't know how to aim at his head. Tried to skip him bur ended up getting attacked by 2 of them at the same time later and dint know how to escape them.

I went through the rest of the area and didn't find anything note worthy other than the gate that took me back to an area 2 spots back.

Minimal spoilers please! Just tell me if I'm supposed to continue trying attacking, or if I'm supposed to run quick, or if I'm supposed to go back to that previous area.
