THEORY TIME
There are pearls in Pebble's cube, so I have a suspicion that scavengers have been there before. The reason Pebbles could be so frustrated with us coming back is because that's what scavengers did. They came back for more and it just got to the point where he found it annoying.
He didn't kill us at first though, possibly due to being a different species from scavengers. When we started coming back he didn't waste time and assumed our behaviour as scavenger-like.

My only doubt with this theory is how he keeps the pearls. There are symbols under them and they are kept in an organized fashion. This may be for memory purposes but I'm not too sure.

So Pebbles might not exactly be that much of an asshole, just distrustful.

When I first came across Moon and was able to understand her, she says that our "journey here is in vain, I have nothing for you." This can imply she might have had a similar experience with scavengers.

She also mentions there being many others like her, but they are a lot further away.
"Must have been Five Pebbles, you don't look like you can travel very far..."
She states they could also be dead by now.

I think her robot kind need massive computers to function properly for some kind of intended purpose. Moon's area in shoreline has it's own title like in Five Pebbles, but it does seem smaller, and it definitely lacks technology. It also appears to be her original location because of the "cube" she is in and how she is attached to the wall.

I think when the rain started her area was destroyed due to her being so low in the world. Five Pebbles would be fine because he is so high.
I do wonder how they know eachother though.

Moon says they "weren't meant to transcend and it drives us mad."
I'm unsure what she means by this, but I assume the robots were originally built for a purpose serving some kind of creator. When the creators disappeared they had to work to perhaps take their place?

Or it could be that they just worked hard to combat the rain which they were never built to do.

I can see Pebbles being called mad though, he seems a bit crazy.

Moon also calls him sick and "being corrupted from the inside from his own experiments." This does confirm that the whole area of Five Pebbles is part of Pebbles, it also confirms that the hairballs are a failed experiment and they are corrupting him.

he does say that he doesn't want to be there though

He also mentions benefactors, so there could have been others helping or some creator, but they are now gone. That could be what's driving them mad.

They do seem to be aware of their own state of corruption though.

I am curious as to why he helped us in that way. It's a but strange offering such an obscure solution to a single creature. Maybe he just wants us out of his way.

It's his job to give us a way out and perhaps fix the whole rain issue, but he doesn't want to do it. So he just puts up with us as long as he needs to then shoos as away.
