Don’t let me stop you.
But yes, Saturday CDT would be better for me, if that doesn’t inconvenience anyone.
I forgot to schedule a reading earlier, usually I'd prefer Saturday too
5pm cdt is like 6am over here, so I'd prefer it be a little later if that's ok?
i wont be able to join Saturday so i wont be available. Hopefully it goes well though!
2-3 hours would be very helpful for me though
Wait, it’s Sunday
Nvm I’m good either way
have we decided a time?
At the moment it's sort of between 7pm tonight or 7pm tomorrow
CDT
I'd prefer 7pm tonight, just because it gives people time to mull it over before we really start talking about it on Sunday
But I can also work with whatever, I'd like to maximize the number of people who can come
And, if it would make timezones easier, I really dont mind doing it twice
That's not a precedent that other readers should feel pressured to follow, though, I have an unusual amount of free time at the moment
I'm totally fine with either
Sunday

Alrighty, looks like it's Sunday 7pm CDT!
Cool
Tabula Rasa reading in 4 1/2 hours

Hm. A shame. I have to be in bed in 2-3 hours >.>
Europe struggles

im going, still gonna struggle tho
if I did another reading in about 30 minutes would y'all europeans be able to be there
@exotic stirrup @paper steeple @earnest cradle
it is a really nice idea!!!
I just don't want to exclude people
I appreciate the offer :3
although given I have already read Tabula Rasa and went crazy in the murder mystery (just look in the comments) I don’t want to put additional strain on your voice
np! I'm always able to bend schedules, I'm sorry it's outside your time zone
Yeah i don't think i'd be up for this cause a reading 1-on-1 would be maybe awkward
/lh
Thanks, though

we'll miss you cele
I can't believe mr beef himself attended the book club this time
if he's even real
wasn't there like, a mr beast worshipping club that got shut down like two years ago
further evidence that he's not real
wha?
I just, every so vaugely remember there being a forum or something that kept joking about him being the patron saint of vc until someone shut it down for being a little weird to make a fanclub for someone who you'd never spoken to
it was when I was only lurking though, so it might've been a once-off general conversation

Book club bump
First ever
Anyway, do we know who’s gonna read the second half of TR?
Me waiting for Yui_Cheshire's fic:
which?
That 5p time travel fix-it fic
There's more?
it's a pretty popular thing yeah
?
I am unaware of the customs sry
ah! sorry!
we nominate fics and then vote on which we want to read c:
you're welcome to nominate one
most of the fics nominated so far are things people here have written, but we have a few from other authors
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1nwJrbn5Y69EaystGRnLIULz3xbSlg1tEusCpeiuYYBs/edit?gid=0#gid=0
here's the current list
We're currently reading Tabula Rasa
Alright then
I'd planned on reading the second half, if that's alright
Unless someone else maybe wanted to give it a shot?

I think atm it's Saturday at 4pm cdt, If I'm remembering last week's feedback correctly ?

If only the earth was flat
im tell you
the earth is flat
yall are ignorant
smh

Antarctica is at the scug's tail
I live at the right leg
whats going on by the kneecap rn?
Nothing much
cool
The pacific ocean is the underbelly
No. The Earth is an hollow donut.
the earth is a figment of your imagination
nonono, the earth is a rock floating in space in a white void with bananas floating around
NO NO NO, it was all a dream the entire time
You have to wake up
What do the numbers MEAN, Mason?!?!?
HOLLOW KNI– oh hollow donut
What do they MEAN!??!
the Earth is just a simplification of ‘where the heck am I’ actually I think
So are you.

no
Damn.
nice
any thoughts so far?
Peak fiction. The characters feel complex and like they have a detailed history. The mystery is really intriguing so far. As a chronic mystery addict, I am hooked. Brass' musings are also pretty entertaining. The portrayal of the RW universe is really well done; it feels like the author really knew their shit.
he sure does
Cy does know his shit.
I'm honestly stumped as to why an iterator would want to kill their neighbor (er, memory wipe). I wasn't really sure how a protagonist resigned to a metal box was going to work in the beginning but obviously I overlooked the possibilities.
get excited for bookclub today
its gonna be great
(or tomorrow, not sure)
reallll
cy is one of the best writers here for sure
since you're liking TR, I highly recommend browsing his oneshots once we're done
you're all too nice
So, is <t:1739052000> correct?
It's extremely early in the morning for me so
One time I was in a DnD group where the DM kept adding more and more people
And we eventually had one person for almost every time zone
It was a nightmare
Damn
MMOTRPG
/silly
@balmy flame can you do the magic time zone thing
?
Epochs already did it
Magic
theres no such thing as timezones
That's because your flat earth theory doesn't include the time wizards
The government's clearly just hiding them
I freaking hate those guys
I mean, how do you stop a time wizard?
what

you know what the government is REALLY hiding????
leeches
A time wizard turned my cat to dust
leeches than gain the power of human consiouness
The time wizards obviously use their temporal manipulation to run the government
and theyre hiding em

you're a leech?????
So the leeches are the time wizards?
no
no im the one hiding them

time wizards arent real
damm time wizards
you are?
i mean

GET HERRRR
Bought by the time wizard lobby
too young to be working for the government

no
your lying
youre 27 years old
Oh yeah?? How do you explain this then? 🕛🕘🕟🕞🕓🕒🕝🕢🕐🕑🕕🕖

TRIGGER WARNING PLZ /j

misc please
fun police is here

Thanks, Banan.
Tree will be running late to book club
Speaking of which, 15 minutes until book club
Gonna be late, devastating
seems to be slow right now anyway? i think you still have time
My internal battle of "this sounds cool" and "I have already read this/not sure if i'll be able to listen to all of it"
They're doing the last two or three (?) chapters today, should be relatively short

Yeah but it starts from the middle and i'd have to catch up
Also it's a classic instance of "you are your worst enemy"
But you already- yeah

Thanks @dense pecan for reading
Tabula Rasa my beloved. Still my favourite rw fic so far. Beads did it more then justice, the reading was great!!!
Shame I wasn’t there for it
The last three chapters are by far my favourite section in the entire story. The way it all just escalates more and more only for it to end so bitter sweat is just heart wrenching.
after the last chapter, chapter 5 is probably also just my favourite. the way the entire group is just arguing with each other while favours begs them to stop even tho it is just making them suffer more is painful.
and i think it has been stated enough already, but the first chapter is just such a great set up. it pulls you in right away and wants you to see more of it. its such a cool concept, i just cant describe it.
forgiveness is just the best. i love her so much. i wish things coudl have ended differently but there is just no way for anything to ever be good between all of them. the reset was probably the only option and it hurts
aw shit i missed it...
...again...
brass is an ass, forgivness is an ass, truth is an ass, and favours is just there, and i love them all. they are so perfectly flawed, none of the main three are good by any means and its just depressing to see how far they have fallen when you compare it to what they once were. i suppose in the end you can only wish that the reset will give them all a fresh start, a blank slate if you will
great writing cy, i will never not tell you to be proud on yourself for that story, and thanks to beads for reading! great book club meeting really, and it was also lovely to see a few new faces
TR is absolutely my favorite RW fic still
While you were preaching, I watched a compilation of every time Frieza has said monkey.
it just all comes together (or unravels, depending on how you look at it) so perfectly
also i will never stop gushing abotu the parallels of the fake brass apologising while the real one in the end doesnt
its sooooo good
I, uh, comedy?
Also, it is good.
also brass and forgivness didnt kiss in the end, so actually its the worst. 0/10, would not recommend
pfft
alright
i got a bit of track there
but yes, tabula is a masterpiece and i can only recommend it to anyone that has not read it. i will even recommend it to people who have read it. i will probably read it again just because i can.
also i still wanna know what happend to best boy scav in the end. like, he surely will return. will he ever get his full payment? will he and brass befriend each other? those are the real questions here
Yeah what will brass do to him post memory wipe?
Ah, I couldn't get here in time after all
Should’ve woken up earlier. /j /lh
Okay, my thoughts on Tabula Rasa:
I'd only skimed it, the first time I went through it. It'd been recommended to me so many times, for now what I can see was good reason, and I'd gone into it initially with a sense of necessity. I was pleasantly pulled into it, unable to keep myself from falling in love with the characters which Cy had created for the setting, but my readthrough was regretfully rushed. This second readthrough, however, I was able to experience it far slower as I read through word by word, and by god what an experience it was. Many credits have been laid out for this work, undoubtedly in part by others within this group chat, and one credit in particular that I'd like to applaud is the realness of the antagonists. It's so difficult to write a truly believable antagonist (or antagonizing forces; it's not quite as clear cut as to say there is an antagonist), but I believe very strongly that 'evil' is a writing tool that should be used so lightly as to only be rarely seen. Ignorant, well-meaning or cornered characters, whose actions are so driven by who they are that the end result is almost inevitable is the driving force behind quality conflict, and even more so when considering the mystery genre that Cy flawlessly utilizes here.
The mystery genre usually requires that we understand the outcome, and by way of understanding character and situation, reverse engineer what has happened. With such a scalpel-sharp grasp on his character's personalities, needs and desires, it's no wonder that each moment was exactly where it needed to be, and no bitter word wasted.
The names no doubt took time to consider: Hollow Brass Sphere, Life Sprung From Forgiveness, Truth Undenied...
Well-said
Each name tells us exactly what's going to happen, before we even know the context of the setting. Brass is a machine of metal, repeatedly hollowed out by the factory reset protocol. We know the name before we ever know the reset.
Life Sprung From Forgiveness, which this may be stretch and Cy will have to confirm or deny the theory, may refer to aspect of the story which revolves around 'after' their reset. The epilogue, which was never written, but we can hope that there was life after the forgiveness of the reset, or after Brass' own forgiveness which was a chance at new life after the factory reset's utilization
Truth Undenied, I believe, is a reference to Truth's immediate ownership of his actions when directly confronted with them. In the moment that we know the name, there's a string tying us already to the fact that there is something they hide, or at least an unyielding bluntness of their personality; a value of nobleness, however twisted, and in the precious importance of protection, preservation, fault, ownership, and truth.
It was lovingly heavy with symbolism, my favorite in particular being the color of the pearls
The orange of the initial pearl which led Brass to begin his investigation, the color of fading coals after a fire. The original pearl an obsidian black, like the coals or ashes of a fire that's gone out, relit by the red pearl of the final reset
An overarching theme is that of helplessness in the face of a doomed eternity, one that's shared by the original media and many other works inspired by it, but I think Tabula Rasa is among the best in its succinct utilization of the inevitable catastrophe of eternity. The love that is there between the three of them is subject to change, and will be subject to change, and it's not outside the realm of possibility that there will be more factory resets as they face down their eternity together, well after the events of Tabula. To me, there's a gentle sense of imminence, an inescapable forgiveness, in the fact that they will be near one another until the very end, and that each one of them truly wants nothing but comfort and safety, and a connection with their friends.
In the words of another game whose mastery lies also in change, inevitability and the wretched gentleness of unyielding, passing time: proximity counts for a lot
The elegance of Tabula Rasa lies in its style of telling, and the fact that from the very beginning we're given the threads to follow, so that by the end we can see the way it was woven so clearly that upon returning to the beginning, the end of the story is already present
thank you very much for writing it Cy, I'm happy that we got to read it for the book club. It's become a new favorite, not just within the pickings of Rain World but also when placed next to the many other works, original and otherwise, that I've experienced. I look forward to reading whatever else you might write in the future
This is incredibly well-put.
I am not a person of many words, but I agree wholeheartedly.
Beads this analysis is incredible
I like literary analysis a lot, I do it for fun sometimes. I haven't done it enough for the other readings we've done here
really good, the turnout was great and people seemed to really like the story
That's good
I'm not the biggest on literary analysis and symbolism, but I liked the fic
It's very yummy and has good suspense
I’m ngl I think I’d be afraid to have mine analysed that hard
maybe that’s just coming from a lack of confidence though
TR really is just that good
book club reviews are always very positive, I don't think you'd ever see a lot of criticism in it, and besides there's a ton to praise hfish for
I will save it for the official reading though
which is inevitable
HFish was my first rw fanfic and I really enjoyed it
Unless I never add it back
Good start
Up to you
I also just don’t think it’s really suited to just reading like the first six chapters or whatever, all the stuff that’s good is later
But anyway, I don’t wanna derail the convo from TR
there’s so much you could dig into in it
I wish I was better at analysis
Especially retrospective
Hmmm…. I’m torn on who my fave character might be
I do think cy has done a really masterful job at making very flawed characters likeable and sympathetic
No one is fully in the right in this story
I like it too but I usually can't put it into words without sounding dumb
Except maybe the scav mercenary, he’s a real one
I feel for everyone
they’ve all been dealt a horrible hand
Just go ahead and do it
You won't sound dumb, I am certain
Also without practice how can you get better?
I really do hope, with everyone wiped, they can come together again… that things might be better, this time
And I think cy made the perfect choice to have brass join them in the memory wipe again. Equal footing, no pretenses…
I do wonder. Like what would you do if you woke up next to two other people, all of you with anmnesia and chat logs of screaming at each other?
I would not be brave enough-
Those chat logs would be gone.
It’s a blank slate, full wipe. Brass got those logs from forgiveness
At least, I’m pretty sure he did?
nuh uh
"For a brief moment, he considered leaving the mark off of their logs, wiping away all the history and bitterness between them entirely. But Favors did not deserve to be forgotten, and, perhaps, they could learn something from their past mistakes."
the old old logs are there
or at least some of them
And it also says that they'll figure some stuff out on their own
plus, we don't see forgiveness' side of it. She might've had the foresight to save some things
Oh!!!
How did I miss that
I don't think she would have
She was like, obsessed
So I think she would have locked the libraries like she said she would
Probably the best start you could ask for.
He sent it back to her, but I guess he could give her the logs after
I suppose she could just alter the program before she uses it
Maybe I just need to reread the end
I do think they all understood the assignment.
Except Truth. Poor old Truth didn't know anything was even going on between the other two.
Probably for the best.
I found a song that reminds me of TR
Specifically from 2:09 on
If I were capable of animating I'd make something for it, but so far it's a slow thing to learn
In this essay, I will-
Don't temp me
Writing essays is still writing 🔥
Gave it a listen.
Huh, this reminds me a bit of split personalities.
Also TR, but that too.
it's not exact but it is if you squint
I see what you mean
I think it's interesting that the ending is a little in defiant of the title, not a true blank slate, but maybe that's for the better. Starting over from zero doesn't necessarily mean things will go better. At least having some remnants to learn from means past mistakes can be avoid
Honestly remembering the past is necessary to avoid making the same mistakes
I haven't listened to that song (or Amanda Palmer in general) in a hot minute! That's a bit of a blast from the past.
Also, beads, your analysis left me speechless, thank you
People are making Cy's days left right and centre.
uhh I was gonna reply to this but forgor sorry.
I would but I do this thing where I try to explain what I'm feeling in words and then the feeling stops making sense
Cy has many days
Some things do not have words to describe them.
Me neither! It's been such a long time, it came back to me after reading like a slap to the back of the bad lol
They really are. This community, all of you, mean so much to me. I definitely wouldn't have written or continue to write nearly as much as I have if it weren't for all of you guys
Anyway, I need to get to making the next vote
wait should I also add the WPW vote in here?
democracy two for one
probably a bad idea
I mean, you should probably put that in it's own thing in it's own forum, yeah
I don't think everyone interested in one is interested in both
true
ahem
pin shuffle time

I'll vote sometime tomorrow. I'm too sleepy for now

I hate to say it, but as a reader of several years, I always judge books by their covers
If the cover looks ugly, I ain't gon' read it

it's hard to avoid
The only time I read badly covered books is if I have a good recommendation or I already know I want to read it
I judge books by page even-ness
Like Closing Time by Joseph Heller.
Absolutely atrocious cover
But an amazing book
Let me send a pic
Oh wait
I lent it to a friend
I'll find it online hold on
Honestly, I only read books if they're recommended to me at this point
(or I find them for free)
Joseph Heller classic
That is absolutely horrendous
It's like they specifically wanted to avoid selling this book
you've read his work?
I saw your absolutely horrendous message as was starting to type mine lmfao
yeah lmao
The book itself is phenomenal beyond words
all the covers are ugly af
Not Catch-22
idk, Catch-22 is pretty mid as far as covers go
All of the catch 22 covers are really pretty
it's just the same figure
The little dancing man is a classic
I don't know what you're talking about
And look at the alternative covers!
All these covers are nothing special
I like them
Idk if an ugly cover will deter me, but I have bought books purely because the cover was gorgeous
I would not read Catch 22 if I saw just the cover

it gets the job done
but it's nothing I'd consider above average as far as covers go

same
Yeah well it's not house of leaves but its charming! Okay?
Priory of the orange tree, your cover is so gorgeous I want to believe you are a better book than you are

I'm sorry I'm a massive catch 22 shill
I like Catch 22 as well but like
I judge a book by its back cover
(Honestly I don't care much for the cover art since a lot of time the art doesn't necessarily correlate that well with the content
)
One book I bought solely on its cover was Player Piano
It was the first Kurt Vonnegut book I read
Oh the house
I have yet to/can't finish that book
for some reason only a chapter makes me feel exhausted
Aint she a beaut?
I dislike house of leaves
Dammit, that's why all the books I keep getting are so weird
This is getting too misc though I think
It is rough. Tbh I didn't really enjoy the (I forgot his name) the stoner tattoo artist guy POV except for a few select points
It is definitely not for everyone
I think this is perfectly acceptable book club conversation tbh
It may not be rainworld fanfic related but we are discussing books
But this book club is for RW fanfics 🤔
Yeah and we're inbetween fics
fun police real /lh
It’s not for general book discussion, but ehhh if you don’t wanna take it to misc it’s not like I have any authority
We are inbetween fics 🤔
Same. I wonder what we’ll read
RCWAK’s an excellent author
Agreed
I think I’d be happy with any of these fics being picked
There are a few I haven’t read yet
Ok offtopic for a second: I think limiting channels to their specific purposes and nothing else is kind of annoying. Having to move channels is inconvenient, and I've noticed that it often kills conversations. While I don't think it's a problem to expect on topic discussion for each channel, (i would not fault asking someone to move after coming to the stories channel and immediately talking about oh, I don't know, stock prices, I also believe that it is the nature of conversations to drift from topic to topic, and in fact, they are most engaging when this is the case. I think it is kind of unreasonable to expect conversation to stay limited to one specific topic as according to the channel, even if the topic is somewhat broad.
I don't mean to complain - it's not a big deal, just felt the need to yap
Honestly I would like to agree
Trueee but if people come here looking for the discussion on TR and there’s a bunch off off-ish topic in here, it’s a bit inconvenient
sorry to mess up your conversation though
Being off topic is a stories chat tradition
🗣️ 🔥

Woke up somewhere 6 hours later to properly make myself bed ready
Okay go read Project Hail Mary right fucking NOW
/j /silly /lh
Would I like it if I disliked ‘the Martian’
Same author right?
Yeah
Well, been a while since i read both, what did you dislike exactly?
The main character’s never ending quippy snarky nerdy cool smart-guy internal dialogue

Ah
Uhh, i don't think it's that bad in PHM
It’s a Gary Stu problem for me
Again, been a while, but completely different protagonist
Mary sue but male
I still have no clue what that means
Ah
Is often a pretty unfair accusation that’s thrown around, but man if I didn’t feel this way about Martian
Anyway getting off topic again

For comparison. Shifting Gales is the antithesis to Mary Sue while she thinks of Lives as a Mary Sue
Ah
What would you say gales’ flaws are? 🤔
- built on top of a pool of acid /silly
"Boy I would be faster to count what is not a flaw in my existence."
Whoa why you purple all of a sudden?
Her weak self-esteem most predominantly
A flaw in her construction isn’t a flaw in her character
For example, an injury/past trauma isn’t really a flaw. Impatience, anger issues, stubbornness etc etc are flaws
Poor self-esteem
relatable
But that doesn’t feel much like a flaw, it’s one of those likeable issues, you know?
She thinks she’s less good than she is doesn’t feel much like a flaw 🤔
That’s like saying she’s too humble
or too kindhearted
Very apologetic as well. And very stubborn in terms of defending everybody but herself
still an issue tho i would say that the character can overcome
Yes, but having issues that actually do have an element of slight unlikeability to them adds depth
That’s what a flawed character is
Also there are other cases of her being a flawed character, but that would be a spoiler for you and Amany
trueee
tabula is an excellent example of very flawed character writing
Clearly brass is perfect
/j
flawless
brass is the perfect main character. Question is only ||which brass||
turn to page 374
Somewhere between the 2nd and the one we focused on, following orders without a 2nd doubt
/j
Here we see the classic example of “making every character an asshole”

Honestly though, I think “flaws” are overrated — the character just needs something to learn/gain over the course of the story to make a satisfying arc
If they’re so competent that it defuses the tension of the story, then it becomes a problem
(Although, sometimes you see characters that don’t change at all, in which case the arc is often the reader coming to understand their “true nature” by the end of the story)
Nothing wrong with competent characters either as long as it is cool, like you said
you're right in that not every story needs a super flawed character driving it
To you, who have inherited my-
"Clearly, this makes no sense. Even though i have no memories, i would have to have been a moron to do this to myself. This must be the fault of my local group, i cannot trust them and should put up a facade."
But I do feel like if a character is feeling flat, a lot of the time looking at their flaws (or lack thereof) is a solid way to give them some depth/make their behavior more interesting 🤔
I would not say flaws are overrated, personally
It does depend what the author is going for, though
Clearly I should base my characters on me who, as you all know, is perfect
/silly
I feel like far too much emphasis is placed on them in amateur writing circles like ours
My stance on that is that there are almost no "positive" traits in a person that could not also become, through neglect or overindulgence, "negative" ones. Putting flaws into a character simply because it's "what you're supposed to do" is no good. But interesting people are "unbalanced" and it is that lack of balance that makes for "flaws".
a lot of self-insert narratives feel intentionally smoothed over in regards to flaws, and that's for a reason
lack of balance is an excellent way to put this
people are flawed, so your character having some elements of unlikability, even minor ones, helps them feel like actual people
That's fair. What people like/find annoying is highly subjective, though
Make them kick puppies, easiest way to make someone a villain. /hj
of course
I was basically gonna say this exactly 😭
Flaws always stem from existing traits that a character possesses
Lmao that’s at ||chapter 1||
Reminder to vote before it closes tomorrow
should have mentioned that i
uh
deleted the whole ocas thing off ao3
im kinda remaking the entire canon of it so yeah, against the world is only readable through docs if you even wanna read it in the first place
that includes into the storm by the way, but i'll add cobble into a frigid world later
sorry abt that, idk what i was thinking
So when does the vote end, exactly?
When I get home and tally the votes
Ah okay
Who is the 4?
AW

Anyway, I do believe it’s time for another Tree reading
Which is to say, my turn for Spoken Story Saturday
GASP

YEAH
That’s literally one in the morning for Anton.
Might join in :D (I don't have work that day)
Also hi :3

Well I guess this one’s for the Euros then

Afraid I will be still at work at that time.
On a saturday?

The past 5.5 years already. Gotta fund my studies
wish working on Saturday wasnt a thing
Damn

Ahem, after receiving some feedback, I have concluded it may be better to do the reading at the traditional 5PM est
<t:1739656800:F>
Time to cash in my "sleep police will ignore me" coupon
those exist?
where can i get some?
Corruption is not a thing in the sleep police
Tbh depending on how much will be read i'll probably go eep at like 1 am, maybe a bit later, and wake up at like 10/11 am
Right, Anton?
@ebon acorn
You have already used up 4 years' worth
surely not
There is no corruption in the sleep police
Oh yeah, do i pin?
Please do
Ohh, that is a good time! Even after dinner
!!!!
I had a thought!!
||In Tabula Rasa, there's a bit where he says that 'water from a tainted source is better than no water at all'||
right at the beginning
||then, at the end, when he finally finds the other slugcat, its fur color is described as "... a splotchy light green, like fouled water."||
||the slugcat provided the altered pearl, the tained source||
Im not keeping up with book club activities

Is okay, it's a lot of reading
I need to catch up with engineer, tabula, waves rah
Don't stress about it. If it's overwhelming you to think about the old ones, drop them no guilt
If you want I can send you summaries of the ones we read, so you can participate with the club without being overwhelmed with the readings
well i dont just wanna give up on em...i need to read more stories chat fiction anyways
Oh thatll be alright but thamk you

no pressure, you do seem like you've got a lot going on. It's understandable if you can't keep up

I’m the reader and you can’t force me not to read backwards
I’m going to pronounce every word backwards from chapter 11 to chapter 1
You leave me no choice, time to pull all chapters apart from 1 off of ao3
/j
I am rapidly approaching your location. /j

That desk mat is so neat
Tree-Piotr boxing match for book club
The dust on the screen look like stars, thematically fitting
Who said anything about boxing? Your computer is going into the past tense, tho

Also, that reminds me of some story i heard where somebody got the 1st part of some series mixed up with the last, so they read the last, then somehow the 1st, and then they were like "damn this series is weird"
Okay gimmie the hard drive tho
/j
You must win it in single combat with Tree
Alright, i can agree to those terms
I am carrying a pretty heavy magnet with me tho, can I put it somewhere? Close to your PC, maybe?
Oh wait, maybe I can do the recording thing we’ve said we’re gonna do forever now
Aeolian Waves audiobook arc
Can't apply corrections no more
/silly /lh
Yeah, fight

Almost 20 megabytes

Wait so how will that work, recording and reading will be separate?
it is 13 minutes long
yeah
I might record chapter 2 when I'm reading live
this is practice
Oh my
Oh also how many chapters are there in plans today? All of 'em?
I was going to do the first six
Ah okay

Maybe I could start going back through all the things we've already read and make an audiobook library?
that would be fun
and take a while
then the next five next Saturday
Yeah that's reasonable

Got a bit of a backlog, i think
tree carrying stories, as usual
@hazy rivet RW fic recording real
recording already?
someone spam me when It's time to start I'm gonna forjor-
20 minutes

less than five minutes to start
Dear Book Club, I apologize for forgetting to record everything after chapter one
Tree was too lost in the sauce
what does the sauce taste like
you all just gotta catch up yourself, we went all the way up to chapter 6.
everyone better finishes there reading homework for the week
air, a little bit of nervousness, and a little bit of excitement
which is to say, live reading is fun and everyone should try it sometime
I missed it.
behold
I'm sorry I had to miss it, but I'm so glad I get to listen to the recording!
Of chapter one only
Too early in the morning for me to attend
Tho
Aeolian Waves imo is special among the rw fics I've read, there's this vibe of it being lighthearted (as in, there was barely any truly bleak moment. Somehow the vibe is that everything is going to be ok) yet serious throughout the story.
Idk, it has a very distinctive feel
It definitely gives a feeling of being alone that a lot of the others don't, whereas it's just Waves and her cat (scug) in a space station, which is such a unique setting, I'd never read anything like it
It was one of the first rw fics I read that helped me realize there was so much more you could do with the universe, as opposed from staying within the confines of the story told by the game
It was also the first fanart I ever did for anything, the end is one of my favorites
I think that might be because of the fact that i just wanted to write a hard sci-fi space fic and everything else was an afterthought
Based 🔥
I wanna write horror
There's little to no angst/bleak undertone, which sure was very fresh and distinct
Sometimes it's nice with some fluff. i saw some really chill oneshots on ao3 the other day, should read those
Again, me want space fic
There is just a dash of angst sprinkled on top, surely that did not make anyone cry?
/silly /lh
Aww, thank you, i'm glad i had such impact!

@balmy flame should we shuffle the date/time pin? maybe we could also add the amounts of chapters that we read up to as well?
AW finale
Soon

Missed it
too early morning
uuuuuuuuuu
Uhhhmmmm
behold
everyone go vote por favor
I think you may have forgotten about something else as well
/lh
The recording?

At any time
we vote on what to read and then read it together c:
we do live readings of whatever we've chosen on saturdays/sundays
feel free to nominate a fic to be read too
Explain?
You guys hop on a call?
hang out in vc while someone from here reads yeah
Yeah
Up to you
Wonder what the next fic will be
Wish I could do reading but no mic + not a native speaker
Oof
I'd like to do a reading, too, but I just don't have much privacy here
if i wouldnt fall over my words every 2 seconds i would love to as well, not happening tho
Anxiety says no
(Not like i'd be that anxious with y'all but 1. It's reading and 2. I'd still need to warm up to vc
)
Same
Also, what does (reply @ me) mean?
Basically saying that people should activate pings if they are replying to me
Though it's probably redundant now that there are roles for that
Actually, speaking of the live reading, who’s gonna do it this weekend?
I might be able to rent the recording studio again
What shall we be reading tho?
Oooh tree fancy reading??
Let Tree do some math rq
I wouldn't mind doing a reading myself
but if tree's gonna have the whole studio again, that would definitely make for a good reading
I’ve gotten my hands on it a few times for book club readings already
Anyway, the vote has been tallied:
What if how time passes for an iterator
What took 2nd place?
I don’t know
What
Fym not supposed to???
How does the voting system work of you don't know!
So when I move the data onto the spreadsheet, each candidate has a spot on the table
When I’m doing the math, I can’t see the names of the fics
When the vote is tallied, I compare the winner’s spreadsheet position to the raw data to figure out who actually won
You’re supposed to “blind” yourself this way to eliminate bias in the calculation
Yeah idk
I'm lost too
If it works it works I guess
So I could go back and compare to learn who actually did come in second, but
A. I’d have to go back into the data
And B. People might get salty so I’m not allowed to disclose any more
But you did befo- ah whatever
Deep lore?
That’s why I said anymore
yep?
I used to let everyone see the data, but we determined that was a bad idea
Oh
Oh dear
There was no drama dw
Just the potential for feathers to get ruffled and such
So now the information is hidden, even to me
Banan was wise enough to foresee it
Banan the wise
Iterator type thinking
I am the resident spreadsheet enjoyer
Anyone can vouch for me on that
Anyway, lemme check if the recording studio is open for this weekend
Also, I was reading though the earlier messagez
Did you guys decide if recommending your own fic is allowed?
Yeah it is
You can just drop it and the link into the pinned spreadsheet
Okay then
Might do that when I write something I don't cringe at
Also, are there any rules of the rating I should be aware of?
Ha! I don't have a fic to recommend so I don't have to
Generally, anything with rating gen or teen is fine. If rating is mature, send to staff to check
If unsure, send to staff
wait
why is your name in light cyan?
You can do some fun rain world server challenges for role colours :p
Thank you Raven
I assume explicit is completely banned for obvious reasons?
aah i see
Makes sense
No rating heavily depends (Imo, never makes sense to put no rating on your stuff)
Agreed
Well I did check chat
And the recording studio is completely unbooked all weekend
So I can get it quite easily I think
@worldly sentinel we’re gonna be reading your fic, so it’s up to you if you’d like to read
Wait you guys don't bring the author wen reading?
I’ve read the last two weekends so I think it would be fair if I gave someone else a turn
We do
It’s just usually the author isn’t the one reading it to assuage the anxiety
Sometimes we (will) read fics by people who aren’t in the server, so I guess in that case, but otherwise we do
Yeah ain't nobody reading their own fic
Hero
It’s usually me or Beads doing the readings though
Do they write?
Okay, thank you
What have they written?
No
Simply develop amnesia and forget everything
Done the first part, the second not so much
Develop more severe amnesia
Lmao
Yeah
Do you guys keep a list to make sure there aren't any repeats?
Wait tr isnt the 2nd fic
We read engineer and sits first
Of course it's spreadsheet
TE, not TR
Why
Wait

I mixed it up
I mixed up te w tr
Mb
TR?
I didnt make this spreadsheet
Tabila resd
I merely use it frequently
Tabula rasa
Tabula Rasa
God i butchered that
Oh tabula rasa
Very good fic by Cy
I liked that one
Indeed
Cy read that aloud himself because he is again, built differently
Quite the show of courage
I'm cringing at the mere thought of my fics being here, letting alone me reading them
For real

The pacing while your fic is being read is a very common experience
Piotr can attest
Actually i was sitting in place the 1st time around and laying in bed the 2nd time around
I was gaming in the background the 1st time tho
I think I was playing ultrakill
The other times I fully listened, though
It’s nerve wracking but it’s fun
Though the way it was read was different from what i imagined at a few points
How do you guys manage that?
I tried my best
Playing while still listening
I've done that a few times but get fully engrossed in my game
Ultrakill is a very chill and relaxing game + I had read tabula rasa before

Tbh i'm not gonna blame you for it, i just thought it would go differently in a few spots
I thought it read perfectly well minus the computer alert parts
But I shortened most of those while I was reading them
Not to say you did a bad job, more like i imagined a few moments differently
Not completely different but just read with a slightly different pace or way
Bet you enjoyed those
But yeah, you did a great job
That’s my favorite part about this
I get to see how other people read the same passages
What
You don't just read the words out loud?
Gotta add some voice acting :3
It was just the little things, i imagined one part in ch6 to be read with a slower pace for example
passion
How dramatic does it get?
Depends on the reader
Shakespearean /j
What's the most dramatic time?
Cy and Beads are far more neutral than me
Deadpan /j
I think beads reading had quite some emotion in tr
True
Though cy was more neutral, ye
