So, while the scope as of now is ch.4 to the end and the discussion of the entire story is scheduled for tmr, I think it's no spoiler anymore to muse my thoughts on the story now (since I probably couldn't be present at the next meeting)
(Disclaimer that these are what I got from the story, I have no idea what Tree intended or didn't intend to convey, I also may miss something)
(Also, a reminder that English isn't my primary language, I might slip into using phrases that sound weird )

what I love about Ch.4 is how all the symbolisms and imagery of what Gray found on the way up just compound what the echo said to him. That all values become empty. What was important, held in high regard, cherished in the past all eventually fades away. 
And not only the past value, the little encounter at the vulture nest could be seen as a antithesis to the value Gray hold at the present, that the world doesn't see what he thinks is important (and grieves on) the same way. 

The sun set.

By the time Gray reached the top and met the echo, he's already given up on his hope and expectations. And then another message was given to Gray; that those things he gave value to were not only zero, but negative. There will be only sufferings down the road. And so Gray was given a choice to let go of all of it.

Then came ch.5, and we're given the flipside to what ch.4 was telling us. 

That meanings and values are entirely up to what we define them ourselves. That because suffering is inevitable doesn't mean they couldn't exceed that negative, doesn't mean they should be given up. 

And so here, Gray decided that he'd rather hold onto those values. That living on is worth more than the accompanying sufferings. That he'd rather take both positive and negative than zero. 

The sun rose.

So he rose from the rock-bottom as he went back down to the scrapyard, where all his valuables, his meanings to hold on were. ```

That’s true. The whole fic has a remarkably bleak yet warm tone. I think Tree’s writing style really shines there- he uses as few words as possible, which makes for an almost “empty” feeling story.

RW feels like the perfect setting for that, with the world itself having a somber, decayed vibe. I think the fic actually captures a lot of the visual feeling of the game in its description

one thing I really, really like about the flow of the piece is how the speed is used. In areas where severe, almost unnatural things are happening it's like the flow halts for a moment. Meeting SoS, the echo.. stuff like that. But with moments that are completely natural, the speed remains completely constant

there's no pause, no preamble, it just happens, and you move on
