I'm doing some lore building for scavengers in Engineer

what I've developed so far:

#

Scavengers have five biological sexes, which see different uses at different stages in their lifespan, and are impacted by environment and hormones in way much similar to honeybees

#

children are all one biological sex, and do not vary from one another in that sense. The change that determines if they grow up to be male or female (or as close to that as they can be) lies in grooming habits. If left with no hormonal alterations, a scavenger will grow to be male, whose role in the 'flock' is to scout and defend, and they tend to have the shortest lifespans of all the options

#

Scavengers are incredibly social, but stress tends to make them more isolated, both as groups and as individuals. Grooming habits are similar to rabbits, where scavengers will groom each other for both community and to defer to another scavenger's dominance in the hierarchy. This could be anywhere from soldiers grooming the chief, to a child grooming its mother

#

there are glands along the backs of both male, female and elite scavengers that act as the hormone activator which turns a child into a female scavenger. They have significantly longer lifespans than males, and later in life their role becomes that of an 'elder', and are often responsible for leading hunts after they no longer have reliant children

#

the fourth biological sex is the Elite, which occurs when an adult female regularly grooms the chief of the local group, similarly to how some types of bees will develop an entirely different type of bee if that specific bee spends a lot of time around the queen. The chief will choose their elites, and the resulting proximity results in very large, very strong elite scavengers with lifespans slightyl shorter than that of an unaltered female

the final option is chief, which is a role chosen during adolescence. During the transitional period from child-female/child-male, a small handful of scavengers are chosen for traits that vary from region to region, and are raised in close proximity to the current chief and their elites. This elicits a hormonal shift towards chief, and when the scavengers reach adulthood they will either fight for the right to lead the current flock, or leave to start new ones. In times of peace, the latter is the most common option, and relations between branching flocks tend to be very good

Elites overwhelmingly tend to be female, though biology is never exact. The chief tends to be 60/40 female/male, with no notable preference either way

#

This social/biological structure is why artificer's disruption was so devastating: it is incredible difficult to reliably raise large numbers of female scavengers during times of turmoil, and the existence of a steady stream of available chiefs to raise the next generation is crucial to a local flocks continued existence. We only see elite scavengers during artificer's reign and Saints, suggesting that it took them an unbelievable amount of time to recover

we have no real confirmation that the scavenger chief in-game is the only one Artificer targeted, and it's possible that her ultimate goal was to wipe out their chances of recovering in the immediate area. It's possible and even likely that she succeeded, and the area needed to be re-colonized by surrounding populations, or that they simply moved away with their brood in the face of such structural instability
