Not details, but a rough overline:
There's a dynamic difficulty system on most campaigns. When you die, it goes down; when you survive, it goes up.
The dynamic difficulty influences the filtering process for reputation, meaning that with the same raw reputation value, lower dynamic difficulty will make the actual reputation higher. (unless reputation is already at the endpoints of -1 or 1)
The Chieftain passage uses the filtered global Scavenger reputation, which is influenced by the dynamic difficulty and therefore lowering it by dying will increase progress on the passage.
