Big text wall incoming lmao

There are some old people trying to obliterate themselves and escaping a cycle of life and rebirth.
They find a way to permanently disappear by starving themselves on gravel and herbal tea
They drill deep into their planet and find "void fluid" which is the most corrosive and energy efficient things in Rain World
They create giant super computers to live on and solve their problem of life and rebirth.
They end up using the void fluid but there are ghost stories of people with too big of ambitions becoming "ghosts" or echos
Then comes a lot later, a supercomputer named Sliver of Straw sends out a signal, saying they found a solution that is portable, effective, and efficient to ascend all living organisms.
SoS then disappears and people go mad, trying to figure out what happened to SoS
Another superstructure (these superstructures are GINORMOUS supercomputers that intake thousands of gallons of water by the look of it) named "Seven Red Suns" sends out a little messenger to another superstructure named Five Pebbles, on how to circumvent a self destruction taboo built into every living cell of them
So, the messenger (SpearMaster) reaches Five Pebbles and delivers a pearl (these superstructures storage medium in universe) on how to rewrite the genome that stops self destruction
After this, 5 Pebbles attempts to do this, and intakes a LOT more water then customary, causing his closest neighbor, Looks to the Moon, to take permanent damage and eventually collapse
LttM pretty much says "Hey yo little bro stop using so much water you're killing me" and 5P says "Fuck you you messed up my experiment and gave me turbo cancer"
A little bit after that, there is another little creature (Slugcat) named Artificer which is on a death quest, but not really important to the lore
After LttM collapses, NSH (No Significant Harassment) sends a Slugcat with very little time left to live, meant to be a messenger (Hunter).
Hunter is sent to LttM to revive her,

as 5P messing up his experiment made him use a lot of water and eventually Hunter reaches LTTM with slag reset keys, waking her up.
Right after this, there is another Slugcat that gets 5P to open the gate to the outside world, named Gourmand which allows more Slugcats to enter his facility and mess with him.
After this, we have a decent time skip, where the base game takes place, following two little slugcats named Monk and Survivor, which both visit 5P (whom has even worse cancer) and give LttM a few more slag reset keys
A HUGE time skip now, and we cut to Rivulet, which takes place when the turbo cancer basically has taken over 5P so he's using a lot of water causing frequent rain to try to get rid of his turbo cancer and tells Rivulet, "take my last bit of power and give it to LttM bc she's so cool and awesome.
I can't help you, I can't even help myself"
Rivulet takes the Void fluid filled power bank all the way to LttM and plugs it in, living happy with her
Another time skip later, the environment is all snowy and stuff, Saint wakes up and meets the ghosts of those with too high of egos, meets 5P and LttM and "ascends" them causing them to end up in his messed up version of Hell, and gets his powers stripped from him by yerrJ
(Oh yea forgot to mention, Monk and Survivor canonically ascend with the help of Jerry, the anti-evil of yerrJ, and they meet each other in the void fluid).

The pearl is... Inconclusive as to if this actually worked or if people just continued to do it because they believed it would work

Some still did it even after the void fluid revolution but it's phrased as if that was more in response to the horror stories about failed void fluid ascension rather then the gravel thing working

You have to go and collect every pearl you can find, they're shiny little balls, and bring them all with you at all times to get the good ending.
There are around 10 pearls in each area
