Hiya! It’s Shin! I’ve recently started making my own little series of Rain World regions and lore, which are just concepts in my head. However, I am going to overcome my procrastination, and finally make this forum post. I’ll attatch all the stuff I’ve for sure come up with.

#

So far i’ve come up with three region concepts that are all linked to eachother, they are part of the same like area in the world
the rain world, perhaps
and one of them is an iterator
odjsksokwmsks i’m just gonna copy pase something into here rq lemme get it
so
One region is like
undersea caves
crystally caves, perchance, but the level geometry is kind of…
how do i say this
”non-euclidean”
reach a dead end, turn around, another dead end
turn back around and there’s a path upward
the level layout makes no sense (which is why it’d be a nightmare to mod)
and there’s some general M. C. Escher vibes with the visuals and flora/fauna
another sub-region i had connects to this one, which I’ve talked about before, is an open aquatic biome, but all the animal life is fractally and shattered
think like
Dragon Curve seaweed
or Mandelbrot fish
because there’s something in the water
which comes from…
an iterator, Sinew Thread of Bismuth, who has kind of… been destroyed
it started doing calculations around the idea of fractals, dimensions, the concept of infinity, and that’s kinda fucked over its systems. It’s now sunken deep underwater.
It started modifying the nearby lifeforms to reflect and experiemnt with its idea of infinity and abstract mathematics, but now that its systems are down, the wildlife, and maybe even the very water and polluted air around it, are stuck that way.
maybe if you travel deep enough into the iterator’s dilapidated form, you’ll find the “puppet” in the center, who is pretty much dead but can send basic signals
This takes place pretty far from the rest of Rain World, so it would be around a new, small group of iterators who are mentioned a few times. They are also mostly dead, broken, and destroyed, but for different reasons. They are (names randomly thought on a whim,)

Blind Those Remeniscent
Bygone Halcyon Moons
Shown a Shattered Mirror
No Eden’s Triumph
and the explorable one, Sinew Thread of Bismuth

#

Other small things- The story follows a pair of aquatic slugcats, working together like Mono and Six, or Sonic and Tails. They, minding their own fishy business, starting recieving odd brainwave signals from deep beneath the waters, and from different directions across the ocean.
The nearby iterators are asking for someone to survey the wreckage. It’s not going to be an easy job.

Something I thought of earlier today, this takes place geographically in a cluster of Iterators far out into the ocean, isolated from the others. The rising tides have taken over their structure, eroding away at their supports. Hence why STB is submersed, and why the others are soon to follow suit.

#

Okay, so… now it’s time for some help… this is literally all I have so far, so I need you guys to help me get come up with ideas or share some of your own! Whether they be lore ideas or ideas for the world/regions, I’m open for just about anything.

Yo! If anyone’s actually here
was thinkin bout adding another hypothetical region to this area, still something aquatic but it doesn’t have to be particularly water-themed at all
I wanna keep with the abstract idea I have so far for the regions (like how the first one is freaky non-euclidean caves, second one has weird ass fractal creatures and environment)

#

don’t know what it could be, though. It would obviously share creatires with the other areas, but would have its own unique identity.
Perhaps instead of being caves or a sort of coral reef area, it could be more like a foggy, craggy, shallow-water area, with sparse resources but serving as a connection to another area. It may have hydrothermal vents that smoke up the waters, and following with the trippy themes of the previous regions, maybe the strange chemicals in the fog cause you to… see things.

quick oasis
#

perhaps hydro thermal vents connect somewhere quite a bit deeper? maybe the 'visions' of the place are of a more 'spiritual' nature, if you catch my drift?

Rain World: Miasma - A worldbuilding project that I want you to help me with!

#

feel like drawing scugs

#

the Emissaries? Perchance

#

work together like Sonic and Tails

#

ooh idea
one’s aquatic and one isnt
so if i make more regions that aren’t all underwater, there’d be some interesting gameplay
they are metaphorically tied together somehow, either magic or the power of friendship
and they gotta help each other through the different environments, keeping the other one alive

#

like if you were in the Labyrinthines (the silly caves,) you’d play as the aquatic emissary, looking for air pockets to help out the other scug, but on the Catwalks and other land-based regions, you’d be the terrestrial emissary looking for water pockets or something

#

i guess that would make it like two campaigns rolled into one, with a land-based and aquatic half, merged together

#

and stuff

Fractured Reefs: A shallow-water area, with plenty of wildlife, and where you start your journey. (You start in a cave with some mossy rocks and some water, clearly the pair of slugcats’ home.) It’s not super dangerous in these reefs, but there definitely a few predator threats. There are plenty of places for the Terrestrial slugcat to breathe, due to the abundance of Breatheweeds (freaky air bubble plants.) The key thing about this area is the extremely weird flora and fauna- all twisted and mutated into unnaturally natural fractal shapes. Dragon Curve seaweed, Mandelbrot Fish, the like. Perhaps even some larger fauna, like Salamanders, are disfigured the same way.

#

The Labyrinthine: A series of expansive underwater caves, with semi-frequent air pockets, nothing much to see here. That is, until you keep swimming, and you reach a dead end. You turn around to backtrack, but where you just came from is now another dead end. Okay… so you turn back once more, and there’s a path upwards. What the hell?
This area is slightly more dangerous than the previous, but with infrequent (though not less dangerous) predators, as the environment poses the main threat.

#

The Smothersea: A slightly deeper aquatic region, similar to the Fractured Reefs, but with less wildlife. There’s a couple leviathans here, but there are some small caves you can use to avoid them. The main problem here is the hydrothermal vents, specifically the… “smoke”… billowing out of them, which greatly affects your visibility. You can use some air bubbles from the vents as respiration, but I would advise not getting too close to that smoke. Though less common, it might be safer to route towards air pockets in the small caves.

#

The Dropoff (sub-region): Exactly as it sounds, it’s a mostly empty region, with quite a few predators. I would stick close to the edges of this immense ravine, looking for places for the terrestrial emissary to breathe and for a higher likelihood of food… and maybe less predators. Unless you really need to swim across that chasm.

#

The Entropic Depths: At the bottom of the Dropoff, there’s an opening, into a vast open expanse into the abyss. I don’t know how you’re going to find somewhere to breathe, but hopefully you do. Oh, and not to mention… the predators, oh boy. Ever played Subnautica? Think like a Ghost Leviathan, but 10 times scarier. Oh yeah, those itty bitty guys from the Smothersea that can cause you to hallucinate things? They’re here, but way bigger.
I pray for your safety.
At the lower areas of this region, things somehow get weirder. You’re mighty close to the Void Sea, so the wildlife is kinda freaky to say the least, but at least the faint glow makes it mildly easier to see.

#

The Aquifer: Connected to part of the Entropic Depths is the somewhat small region known as the Aquifer, which is named after a submarine river of odd fluid, slowly flowing through the sediment. This river flows into some odd deepsea caverns, which are filled to the brim with bioluminescence, a nice break from the dark, empty expanses of the Dropoff and Entropic Depths. There’s plenty of food and air bubbles here, thank goodness. There are a few predators, just as anywhere, but nothing you can’t take care of at this point.
Also, please don’t swim in the river, even though it is quite mesmerizing.

#

As you progress toward the far end of the river, you start to see more and more infrastructure and technolgy. Eventually, you come across an entrance to a… sunken iterator? This far down?

#

The sunken remains of Sinew Thread of Bismuth:
At last, you have made it to the origin of the odd pulsating signal that’s echoed in your minds all this time, and where the other strange strange signals have been directing you. Here, there is little need for air, as there are several large dry areas that have yet to be breached by the seas. The structure itself, though, is quite dilapidated. It seems the pressure of the sea has caused most of the infrastructural damage, but the other systems seem to he running overtime, showing that this iterator isn’t dead, and still vigorously working on… something, even in its dying ages.
In the central can, you can find the puppet of Bismuth, working nonstop on calculations and rambling on about something. You’ve received the Mark of Communication, somehow, through the signals of the other Iterators in the area, allowing you to vaguely understand Bismuth’s jittering and ramblimg.
He’s clearly seen better days.

#

After your confrontation (involving whatever happens there, I have no clue yet) with the disheveled Iterator, you you reach a sub-region of SToB known as the The Ladder. While not literally a ladder (though there are quite a few in there,) it’s an upward path back to the surface of the waves, going straight up. At the end, you’re met with a view of the surface of the ocean, a breath of fresh air (literally, for the terrestrial scug,) from the dark abyss.

#

And, well, that concludes the Aquatic half of Rain World: Miasma’s regions. Well, kinda, there’s a small-ish region called the Catwalks, which are vast bridge-like structures that stretch over the surface of the waves, and has some areas close to the ocean’s surface as well as some parts dipping underneath, allowing for the aquatic scug to breathe just as much as the terrestrial scuf, so I’m counting it as a connection area between the two sub-campaigns.

Yeah, I get that. I’m trying to get all my random ADHD “what-ifs” into writing which is hard because idk how to pace this. I’m trying to create sort of like a hypothetical Rain World DLC campaign, with its own lore separate from but also taking place is the same world as the original RW game. I’ve started with just coming up with loose ideas for regions, characters, and an exposition, but I still don’t know much about where to take this.

proper rose
#

Dumping these here because can’t wait anymore for some reason:
The Wreckages: The first above-water region you encounter, the Wreckages are a vast trash field of broken infrastructure from the two Iterators it sits between, SToB and [whichever other one I pick.]
It’s difficult to navigate the rough metal terrain, but there are some pockets of water and areas where Scavengers and other wildlife store food. There’s not much to be found here, so you better keep making your way onward. (I don’t have an actual reason yet for why they’re even going above the water up here anyway, as I have no clue what they’d do when they encounter SToB. I’m thinking that whatever happens there leads them to need to go on the surface to another Iterator to deliver infornation.

Something I never said but thought about. Obviously it rains on the surface, but what if in the underwater areas, instead of rain, the water gets super contaminated with the strange stuff from SToB that’s causing all the weird mutations? So if you stay in shelters, which would look different here, you’d be safe from it.

proper rose
#

The Sunless Isles: You’ve made your way in the general direction of [Iterator destination], and you’re practically underneath it now, the shadow of it’s superstructure casting the small islands below in permanent shade. There’s a decent amount of predators here, so don’t let your guard down in this eternal dusk.
Here on the surface, you’ll start to see some terrestrial creatures similar to the weird aquatic ones before, filling the same bizarre niches. Like, who really wanted a reptile flashes psychedelic colors, on both land and sea?

#

More coming in a sec, running out of original ideas and kinda busy

So uhm, i realize now that

#

i never really explained why it’s called Miasma

#

Simple though really

#

The pollution, mainly from SToB but also from the other deteriorating Iterators, kinda makes the rains a bit like

#

toxic and deadly and the winds are full of chemicals

#

which is why it’s not safe underwater

because the water gets polluted too, when the rains and winds spread the toxicity pretty much everywhere

<Greetings, little critters. What brings you two all the way up here? And in such condition? I’m not even going to ask how you’ve made it up this high on the surface, aquatic friend. I sense a force pairing you two together. Impressive. But I guess it doesn’t matter.
You probably are here because ol’ Mirror has grown restless. Pity, sending pretty little things like you two way out here, all for his little chores… oh well. We’re all dying anyway…
I hate to send you back emptyhanded, but I regret to say that I’ve given up listening to him. He’s got nothing to provide us, and neither does SToB. I don’t see why we iterators should waste our energy and time helping that madman Bismuth… he was my friend, but it pains me to say that he had it coming. Now, beneath those waves, he decays. It’s painful, I’m aware. But, and I pardon myself for rambling, we are all in disrepair, we’re all dying in one way or another. Please tell SaSM that I’ve given up worrying. I’d rather use my spare time and energy for more fruitful efforts.>

We’ve been trying to get you back. Or I have, at least. TiS has other plans, BTR just doesn’t seem to care, and EDO has been annoyingly pissy about it all. We’re all still thinking about you, though. Sigh…
-#I need to ask BTR how to be more reassuring.
Bis. I don’t think you’re a madman. Not completely. I remember when we used to be friends. We still are, right? Before you fully drifted off, I wanted to let you know that whatever you came back with, whether an astounding breakthrough or a neat little equation, I’d be proud of you. You didn’t let go, though, like I thought you would. Never finished, never rested, never ceased your solving, and that’s got you here, huh. The waters are kind of freaky-looking near your structure, y’know- heheh…
I sent a little pair of messengers to check in on ya. Pretty sure you know about ‘em too, and the freaky magic binding them together. I wonder if they’ve made it there yet. I asked them to find some garments for you as well, but I have no clue how good of a memory they have. Nervous chuckle …I’m impressed if they even arrive there together, with how deep down underwater your structure has sunken. I pray for the blue one and its… lack of gills.>

i decided to give my ittyrators some personalities

#

Shown a Shattered Mirror / SSM (Mirror) is the overprotective slightly annoying big brother, who cares a whole lot about his friends, especially Bismuth, almost annoyingly so. He’s got a sweet heart, and is very sorry to have sent you on this perilous quest, yet also confident in your collective abilities. Teamwork makes the dream work, right?
Blind Those Reminiscent / BTR (or as i like to call them, Remy) is the realist, but also a bit annoying in their perceived pessimism. They’re a pretty reasonable character, though. They prefer their research in solitude, but subtly enjoy your brief company, somewhat regretting having piled on more tasks for you on your journey.
Tessellations in Sand / TS (Tessa) is the group’s wholesome relief. She’s a really sweet personality, and though you’ll never meet her, she knows about you and wishes you all the luck and fisfish you could want. She loves the wildlife, and categorizes and befriends it quite often.
Eden Dreamt Otherwise / EDO (Eden) is kind of rude sometimes, but they all know he never means it. He’s got a good heart, and truly does care about STB, but doesn’t have the confidence or calmness to try and do anything about him. He's pretty brash and dismissive, and devotes most of his time to the Problem.
Before his descent into insanity, Sinew Thread of Bismuth / SToB (Bismuth or Bis) was a quiet but generous and curious type. He often quietly observed the fauna and flora in his passing centuries. That was until he kind of uh
went crazy
and obsessed with fractals and the idea of infinity
which kinda ruined him
yeahhhh
best not to think about what goes through his head, and what he feels physically. It started with his circuitry, then his structures, then the purposed organisms he developed, then the whole ecosystem around him… from the fins of a Regal to the very food chains and natural systems, they all evolved to reflect fractals.
I wouldn’t doubt even his own left hand has turned into a weird looking fractal… thing.

These are good frameworks for characters! If they’re simply meant to be iterators you meet as a traveling scug and then get a mission from or give a pearl to, then this is plenty. But, if you wanted a narrative to hinge on them, or if you wanted a character arc from any or all of them, you’d have to build them a bit more.

#

Some things to consider:
Iterators all share some things- they were abandoned by their creators, and they were made to solve the great problem. This affects all of them to a greater or lesser degree. You should think for a moment what this group’s opinions are on those things. Who thinks the problem is unsolvable? Who thinks that SOS found the solution? Who is glad that the Ancients are gone? Who misses them? Who resents them for leaving?
Once you have an idea on these, figure out where the disagreements lie and how those disagreements are resolved. Are there those who bicker constantly in the group chat or private DMs? Is it an underlying tension, never fully addressed? Or has all the arguing been done, and now it’s simply become a ‘we don’t talk about that anymore’ situation?
You can take this same angle of approach on other things the group might be dealing with, such as Bismuth’s situation.
Does everyone care about what’s happening to Bismuth, or even think that it’s a bad thing? Maybe his strange fractals situation is a step towards solving the great problem, after all. Is his problem one that is openly discussed, or is kept discreet, out of sympathy for him or embarrassment by him? Does Bismuth still have coherent opinions of his own? Does he still communicate them to his peers?
There’s a lot of drama in having what is essentially a small family or close group of friends who are all having to deal with one of them growing suddenly and terribly mentally ill- and drama is captivating to read if done well!
