I have idk probably 10 hours in the game now. It's starting to get to a point where I feel aimless. The only weird part so far I've found is some robot that didn't end up doing anything. But ever since then (probably 7 hours ago in my time now) it's kinda the same old wake up, eat, die, wake up again, die, wake up, eat, finally make it to a different shelter, mixed with sometimes finding a gate. Is the game going to go somewhere eventually, or is that essentially it?

It is cool how huge the world is though. But it's starting to feel like I'm seeing the same thing. Which gets especially annoying and feels like I'm wasting my time when I get caught in a loop (like always having a lizard outside a specific area that I must cross) that takes a few tries and a roll of the dice to escape.
there is a loose “plot” of sorts, but it’s intertwined with your own personal actions and experience rather than being scripted for you, if that makes any sense. It’s a very immersive ludonarrative game, you’re experiencing your own story entirely as you play
if you want some guidance on where to go from where u are rn, we can offer it to you, but there’s many different ways to go about it. before it all though, this game is about immersing you within the personal experience of a small unknowing animal in an alien world, I’d recommend trying to embrace that first, though it also sounds like you somewhat have already
here’s a little something I wrote a while back that’s just my general advice for new players when it comes to direction and mindset, though you’ve made quite some distance already :)
might I ask, when you met the blue robot, did you do anything? Is the yellow guy (an overseer) still following and guiding you? (There was no right or wrong answer in what to do here it just provides some helpful context)
Just to be clear, there is a storyline, it just has a lot of you wandering in it
well yeah, that’s what I was getting at though a little more ambiguous I guess lol
the robot was guiding me to it at first, that was how i found it. But when i found the robot it didn't really want anything to do with me
i tried all the interactions I could and it wasn't making a difference so I basically was like "dueces, i got grapes to eat" and left it there
and is the yellow guide still with you?
There wasn't anything you really could do
don't want help, suit yourself 😂
Yeah and sometimes he turns blue but the only thing they guide me to now are the shelters
it’s less so that they don’t want it, but that u can’t do anything for them :) the little yellow guy wants them to help them, and is trying their best. have u noticed any strange symbols shown by the yellow guy now? like the little white objects that were hovering around the robot
does have some things to say in between the shelter signals, occasionally.
shelter signals and this little prism thing
can you keep an close eye on the symbols and pictures they show? If you see nothing besides that at all then we can help further, but if the games working correctly you should be seeing some new symbols, like the things u saw above the robot
Rain World geoguesser challenge hard mode
My first guess: ||lower CC||
I agree I was also thinking that haha
?
dw, we were just guessing where this screenshot was taken
nothing is labeled so i give creatures and places my own names
Also, don't assume that there's one specific area that you must cross. There might be ways around. They might also be really long and not worth it, but it's always worth a check.
but that is very strange, I’m wondering if we should show you what you are supposed to be seeing,,, I’m gonna grab an image or gif
all reigons tell you their names at the start of each cycle
self creature naming is extremely based and how it should be done
sometimes there's not
Yeah it's fun like that
I maintain a big chart of all the names people come up with for things, it's great.
oh yeah i guess. but then you never see it again so nobody gonna remember so i just name it myself
Yeah, but you never know, and that knowledge is useful
if the biome had its name on the map that would be nice
and an encyclopedia of what is what
you can generally tell creatures apart purely by design, so whatever you call them works
mfw there's that lizard that's waiting right outside my shelter door
not like there's anyone in the world to name everything
this gif is not the best example, but have u seen this symbol anywhere? or are you perhaps still getting the robot symbol?
Most things don't even have official names, learning what's what is part of the challenge.
goofy little yellow guy
That's also a problem you can solve with more knowledge
oh yeah i have seen that sometimes. At first i tried to follow the arrow but then after a while it leads to nowhere and/or disappears so
(in general as you talk here you'll just get people calling creatures different things that are more generally agreed on names)
You'll get a feel for how to deal with that sort of thing eventually.
that’s what you want to follow :) they can be a little unreliable but that’s the direction the story is in
again, that only matters after everything else, like learning and immersing yourself as a little slugcat, but that’s the way indeed
i'll try to follow them but it's hard because they often want me to go away from where food is and I kinda need that first
And it never hurts to explore
you don’t always need to survive the cycle in order to learn something new :D
true
And the learning might help you survive later cycles, so it's a worthwhile trade-off.
surviving happens less often than dying anyways
someone suggested i try to use keyboard instead of controller tho
i keep nearly quitting the game because the movement mechanics are so bad
It doesn't make that much of a difference, I don't think.
but apparently keyboard makes things better
best way of looking at it in my opinion is that dying isn’t as punishing as you might feel, it really depends on your mindset, but all dying does is put back your physical location, but it doesn’t change what you’ve learned
and i mostly die to the game's bad movement mechanics so i just get mad and quit and play something else usually
Personally I find controller more intuitive just because I don't have to think as much about exactly which direction I'm pointing in.
keeping your karma up only matters once u feel ready to move onto a new region and have a goal in mind, before then it’s best to not worry about it
I’m a keyboard person because most games I play using it, but I know an equal amount of people who prefer controller, you could try both and see how you feel
i get that but I also would like to not die at all lol. would probably be better for immersion
i use keyboard for nearly everything, but i'm capable of controllering
i'd never swap for RW
otherwise on first death you uninstall and reinstall the game 😂
(You'll also get the hang of the movement over time, it's its own learning curve.)
dying is an integral part of the rain world experience! it doesn’t have to be nearly as frustrating as you imagine if you shift your mindset a lil
You have very little to lose by doing so
embrace learning and being lost before valuing physical progression
It might feel a bit weird but it's better to work with your death rather than against it.
Weird technical reasons.
because this game isnt really about typical physical progression anyways :) from the beginning to end, the one who has changed is you and what you’ve learned and how you’ve grown
it’s unconventional, but if you embrace it you will have a much nicer, less frustrating time haha
rain world is quite unique in that regard
Most of the scenery is derived from prerendered images, and the maximum aspect ratio is how big the images are.
hmm
this kinda seems to line up with other issues the game gave me earlier
i thought the game was broken for a long time (and i guess it kinda still is but i found what it didn't like) because it would get locked on the menu
my first hour in rainworld is just me being mad at the menu
Plan for failure, so that you can get something out of it and don't get frustrated when it happens
because apparently the game freaks out and locks up when it sees any controller plugged in that isn't 1) mouse 2) keyboard 3) gamepad
if its anything else it locks up the menu and you can't press anything
huh,, interesting
I use a USB xbox controller to play, the input system is supposed to accept input from anything but for some reason it very rarely decides when you boot it that it'll only listen to keyboard.
the whole "press any button to get to menu" thing when you first open the game, i couldn't get past that for a while. Clicking on the game would take the game window out of focus. Only way i could get past that part was hitting ALT-TAB while i had the game in the foreground but that still left me locked on the menu
I have no clue why that is happening but you could always ask in #1019653041982537879 if you wanted, idk lol
huh
i did many times before
but eventually i figured it out by chance when i unplugged my other controllers
for something else unrelated
maybe trying out keyboard will help with that? otherwise idk
(Rain World's artstyle gets very weird technically, which does come with some restrictions)
I’m gonna go sleep now but I wish you luck in figuring that out (and playing rain world :))
so when i heard the game has technical issues now i'm sensing a pattern 😂
I mean, the game should be stable, the aspect ratio thing isn't, like, a bug or anything. Just a side effect of the rather unusual art direction.
what i ended up doing was plugging all my sim controllers into a USB hub. Then when i want to play specifically rainworld i just unplug the one hub and then can play it
I haven't had that much issue with the input, yikes-
(the good side of that trade-off is that the scenery can be really high-detail)
not much unfortunately
kinda just watches
the creepy guys dont seem to like them
almost got blown up by their explosive spears as they tried to kill the blue watchers 😂
they'll kill the yellow one too actually
best to stay out of their line of fire if you can
someone called the ||trash worms “curious eye spaghetti”||
didnt mean to ping sorry

WOAH
I found really really tall bunnies with antlers
and I can ride them

they look like something out of War of the Worlds when they stand all the way up
Magic Playthrough
Also as i was exploring the sky island area some weird shit happened
a couple actually
kinda freaked me out
my shadowplay didn't record it though for some reason even tho i told it to
- There's sometimes this loud noise that occurs and it seemed to be loudest when i was near the farthest left shelter
- The whole places shakes and it especially shook when that loud noise happened
- One time I woke up, the whole place was DEAD. It was like winter happened. It was only certain areas too. I felt fine in it, but it was really spooky and creepy
i was walking around and there were dead bats on the ground
looked like ash was falling to the ground
and there was a lizard that followed me from this brighter and more normal area on the outskirts by one of the pier areas. as soon as he followed me through a tunnel into the dead zone, he died

music creepy too
then the next cycle it was all normal again
oh
and at one point everything turned like a blueish green and it looked like i was about to get sucked into the sky by a blue matrix
lasted for only like 3 seconds
sky islands are fucking weird man
Creatures acting dead seems like a strange occurance
Idk what the loud noises were about either
they were dead
it was spooky
and i was the only one unaffected apparently
i thought like winter had come overnight or something
it was like in chernobyl on HBO
when they walk outside and birds just fall dead out of the sky

Oh I'm eating good tonight
