You can determine the circumpolar point of the hemisphere you're in (the point in to which the axis of rotation points) by observing the motion of stars throughout the night.
Using the circumpolar point, you can determine your latitude using it's altitude (degrees up from the horizon)
Of course, you would have to know which hemisphere you're in to tell if your latitude is North or South, but it is very useful nonetheless.
