Well, specifically the latter portion that's actually about Gilgamesh. I'm gonna type some names wrong, but if you haven't read it, it starts with a story sort of like Noah's Ark, but much much older, where a man named Utanapishtim was told by god that there was going to be a storm that would flood their valley. so he told his community and together they built a big boat that looked like a bowl, and they loaded two of every type of farm animal, and everybody got on and that's how they survived it. In repayment for this act of help to his community, god mad him and his wife immortal

This is NOT what's similar, but that's Utanapishtim's deal

#

Gilgamesh, Utanapishtim's great great grandson, is a right troublemaker, and a lord of a great piece of land. He's best friends with a bull man for many years, and they wrestle and just generally shirk responsibilities and such, but eventually his best friend dies

#

And it shakes him, because to him his best friend was the picture of life and strength, and to lose him rocks his worldview so completely that he grows terrified of he himself dying, because suddenly it's a possibility

#

So he gets on a boat, and he gets a sailor guide, and he starts to travel the world looking for his great great grandfather Utanapishtim, the immortal

#

And it takes months and months, maybe years, and he's completely miserable the whole time. Terrified of death, he finally one day finds his grandfather and stumbles into his presence begging, unshowered and emaciated

#

And his grandfather is like 'look. Immortality is not what you need. You have less life now than when you started, because you've squandered it dwelling on the death of your friend, taking an impossible and dangerous journey, and neglecting yourself. you want the secret to life? here it is: go take a shower, go eat food that you like, go home and take your family and responsibilities seriously, and find the things that are good and create goodness for those around you'

and then he sends him off, and Gilgamesh has to take this return journey back to his home, processing that his problems are not over, that there IS no fix it button and never was

#

and that the point to life is living good and living well, so that when it does end you're ready

#

It's a good story, and also unfinished! That's as far as the cuneiform we have goes, but the story itself isn't done, or at least the people studying it don't think so

#

We just don't have records of the rest of it. We only just found all that recently in a cave on a bunch of stone tablets, like ten years ago or something

Utnapishtim through the deities he convened with, and Gilgamesh through the preservation of his Epic, potentially one of, if not the oldest surviving work of fiction that is both semi-complete and understandable.

When he sings of Uruk again at the end of the tale, he’s almost telling how he will become immortal—by living a life worth living and being a king worth remembering.

A story of a man trying to earn immortality is among the oldest works of fiction that we can read and understand. Beautiful.
