Let's take the colony I'm playing right now. Boreal Forest, mods that shake up combat and faction interaction, and trying to expand the place with 10 people running around. Winters are brutal, enemies constantly raid me, and progress is slow because no trade caravans show up.

I get to gunsmithing tech after a round about way due to mods and decide to grow Blue Fruit to substitute my food supplies. I'm now able to make my own ammo, food is still tight but steady, and I can devote time to progress.
