MAJOR DARKWOOD SPOILERS
||Basically you were a polish soldier sent with a squad to investigate anomalies in a nearby forest after a meteor crash landed there.
The trees of the forest had become overgrown to the point of being impassable walls, so you and your squad entered through an underground tunnel.
However, while camped, you were attacked by a horde of savages, killing all of your squadmates and leaving you stranded in the forest alone.
As you progress through the game you encounter monstrosities created by the meteorite "experimenting", it takes life forms and tries to duplicate them (hence the tree overgrowth) but it has a hard time telling inorganic parts from organic and telling apart different beings.
This leads to what it creates usually being disgusting amalgams, line one poor guy who got turned into a half-snail thing.
The savages also seem to worship the meteor, as they set up rituals to cultivate this duplication process.
Anyways, eventually you burn down a massive tree made of corpses and finally leave the woods unless you decide to pay more attention to your surroundings, if you do you'll find remnants of the forest still in the city, roots growing in the floors, an abomination locked in the basement, a beating heart in the walls.
And if you dig deep enough, you wake up in the real forest. It's like millions of trees all folded together, with a mass of beating flesh far below. Dreaming corpses surround you, ignorant to the truth of things. As you explore the nest, you find the crash site of the meteor. At first it reaches out with a warm light, attempting to lull you back to sleep, but if you manage to reject it, it quickly becomes cold. Eventually, you find a dreaming corpse clinging on to a flamethrower.

Basically, mimicking how the Age of Fire is constantly artificially prolonged, anyone who is afflicted with the curse can never stay dead, but they lose a little bit of their original self each time they die

But the Night of the Hunt gets worse each time, more beasts appearing, more townsfolk losing their minds, incomprehensible horrors appearing

And the one thing that eventually breaks this loop is you
Eventually, Gherman will offer to free you from the dream so you can wake up under the morning sun, but if you reject his offer, he believes you've gone mad and attempts to kill you anyways

If you beat him, the Moon Presence itself will descend and force you into Gherman's place, taking care of the dream just like he did

But, if you gain the power of the Great Ones on your journey, you can reject the Presence, kill it, and end the nightmare

And you can literally summon him for some of the hardest bosses in the game

In fact, if you save him from becoming mad in a certain area, he helps you with the final boss

Seigmeyer is a lil different

He went to Lordran on the Undead Pilgrimage, a journey that worthy undead can take if they manage to escape the Asylum

You encounter him several times and usually get him out of some kind of bind

And there's one portion where he offers to sacrifice himself so you can escape a horde of demons, and that can go 2 ways

Either you listen to him and he dies honorably in combat to save you

Or you fight the demons with him and save him yet again

This literally makes him go Hollow

Basically, going hollow is heavily based on one's sense of purpose, if they feel like they have a goal to push for they can come back to death intact, but by denying Seigmeyer this one chance to repay you he loses all purpose and goes mad
